Lenses / Re: 40mm f2.8 STM - Lens Hood?

The ES-52 is a bayonet-mount type lens hood specifically made to fit the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens.

Not so sure about that, or at least, it's not a compllete description. I don't see any place on the lens for a bayonet type hood to mount, and I suspect it's a screw-in hood, or it comes with a screw-in hood adapter like the 50/1.8 II.

Just picked up my shorty forty here in shanghai. It comes with the tiny lens case LP811 and the ridiculously cute ES-52 lens hood, which as Neuro points out, is a screw-in hood. It's so small that I first didn't realize it is actually a hood. Screwed in, it only protrudes 8mm!

Did it 'come' with it or were those items separate purchases? Because mine comes tomorrow and I bet you it is only a lens in a styro and cardboard box.

Oh let's not water down the results with off topic votes, since Canon is waiting with baited breath for the Ultimate CR why I didn't buy a 5D3 poll.

yeah credit card companies love that sort of reasoning.

Lenses / Re: Most requested lenses for replacement?

When I go FF it will be difficult to not keep a crop body around because besides weather sealing I just can't see too many reasons why the 16-35 and 17-40 are better than the 10-22. Love that lens. So I'd say something in between the 16-35 and 17-40 pricepoints ~ 1000-1200, and better wide open and corner sharpness. Perhaps a 2.8 17-40.

Candyman - good question, one that I am able to answer from experience ! I had the 35 f2 also, used it on a 7D and a 5D, I found it a little unpredictable and unreliable ( and I reckon it back-focused a lot too). The 35 f2 is old technology, this 40mm is far, FAR better in terms of output IQ and performance in general. I don't regret getting rid of the 35mm one bit.
Rhys.

Thanks Rhys. I was leaning towards replacing the lens because of what you mentioned as your findings. So I think I will go for it. Just hope to get a decent price for my 35mm f/2 (bought 6 months ago for 249 euro)

I just sold my 35 f/2 to fund my 40 pancake. I'll let you know how I like one over the other on both film and the 7D

Some people have budgets and actually stick to them.

EOS Bodies / Re: How would you upgrade?

I understand this issue as well. I have been frustrated with higher ISO issues on my 7D and as my style of photography has evolved I need reach and fps less and less. As a fine art photographer I would be foolish not to move to FF. But I do not need nor can I afford a 5D3, a refurb mk2 is within my reach, especially if I sell off my EF-S glass but with the tease of a entry FF body on the horizon I say you should wait along with me and see what develops.

I'd say get a 100 f/2 and ditch that 85. Too much CA (in the 85) and you have enough PP to deal with in an event that big. It's the forgotten lens iyam.

Just ordered mine. I'm done with older gen AF (50 1.8, 35 f/2) This will stay on my film body primarily since I use the 24-70 there quite a bit and I use the wider half of that lens more than not. Now my Elan 7 will feel like a PnS!

Perfect street rig for film on my Elan 7 and nice body cap for a 2nd body in my digital bag.

Why is the newer Canon handstrap always backordered?

Ughhhh I gave up on finding a perfect all in one solution that didn't have too many drawbacks. I just use a BR RS-7 and keep both a monopod and tripod plate each in each my two bags. I switch from film to digital bodies quite often and like having one strap to use on both, The Black rapid sling does a good job. I have a Carry Strap BR clone but it just doesn't stay put and the carabiner thingee loosens up over time. It just stays at home now.

initial issues to be recognized……that was ricockulous. I think it just shows your IT dept is run by crotchety old farts.

Some of the worlds largest companies, i.e. Pfizer still supply their people's laptops with XP. Ricockulous.
