Software & Accessories / Re: Lightroom Scaling Issue on Retina Display

Looks like they changed my thread from a question to idea - feel free to vote for it if it would help you out as well.

The other issue with this scaled mode is that I only get 1680x1050 displayed in the image window @ 1:1 in the image window when full screen.

I want to have the proportional panels and the nice retina-optimized image display as well. Looks like that will require some changes to Lightroom.

Hi Phil - thanks for this explanation, that's exactly what I was looking for.

Per the advice on the thread at, I've tried the scaled option in the display settings with the slider far right (more space), and it does exactly what I want it to do with Lightroom. Unfortunately I'm afraid it's going to affect performance, but I'm willing to try it. The other downside is that it will affect more than just LR.

I wish that Adobe would provide a setting so that we could take advantage of the retina screen for the full LR interface, and not just the image display - instead of needing to change an OS setting. It just seems to be a very inefficient use of space as-is.

Do you agree that this would be a valuable improvement, or are you satisfied with your current scaling solution?

I started a topic regarding the Lightroom GUI on retina screens on the Adobe forum. Have any of you found a way around this, or do I need to put in a feature request with Adobe?

Does anyone know if it behaves similarly on a Windows box running a display with similar pixel density to a retina screen?

Details here:

BTW this is with 5.4, but the behavior was the same with all 5.x releases.

I'm interested in this as well, if anyone has tips to share.

I trimmed the fins off of mine soon after I bought it, just to avoid a similar situation. You aren't the first person I've heard of having an issue with the RB at security..although the idea that it would fly is a new one.

It's a pretty bad idea to return just because of the box, right?  But still, it's weird. ..

If you're so concerned that you're considering a return, you should check with Canon to see if it's just a new design.

Trying to upload from my cell. Hope I'm doing this correctly.

My October purchase from Adorama came in the usual style box.

That design looks nice, though.

Oh, does the picture on Amazon look different than the one you have or something?

Edit - The WRT-A's manual says the receiver use CR2 batteries, but I looked at some youtube videos of user reviews and some have receivers that take AAA batteries.  I guess there are variations.

This is what my receiver looks like:

I use this remote - should satisfy the requirements, but it would be 2 extra things to carry around. The receiver can sit in the hotshoe, but I just let it hang off the camera most of the time - it doesn't weigh much.

Edit - looks like they've revised the receiver since I purchased mine, so it might weigh a bit more (or less) now.

Software & Accessories / Re: Good idea to upgrade to LR5? Regrets?

There were some issues due to the MAC coming out with a new OS.  I think they have been fixed.  There will always be bugs, most of them are minor.

They fixed the slider color/Mavericks issue in LR 5.2, but there's no fix (that I've seen) for LR4 users other than upgrading to LR5.

There is a difference.  In a one-stage switch, the camera will engage the AF and then immediately shoot.  There is no time in between for the vibrations introduced by the AF mechanisms to dissipate before the shot goes off.  In a two-stage switch, you half-press the remote to engage the AF, then you have the option of waiting for the vibrations caused by the AF motors to dissipate, and then you fully press the remote to fire the shot.

And in this scenario you can't use manual focus when you set up the camera? Can you share a little more detail about the use case?

FYI, there's a significant issue when upgrading from LR4 to 5.2, with any images where the spot removal tool was applied:

It's better in 5.3RC, but the behavior still isn't identical to LR3/4 - so depending on the particular image/edits applied, you might need to replace the previous spot edits.

I do really like the new Spot Removal and Radial Filter tools, though. For me, those alone are reason enough to upgrade, and aside from the hassles mentioned above, I haven't had any issues with 5.2/5.3RC.

I just went through similar hassles with them when transferring a license that I purchased in order to qualify for the LR/PS CC deal. I spent hours and got different answers from several different chat/phone agents about the process, which was ultimately successful (just in time for them to offer the same $9.99/mo deal without the previous PS requirement).

Specific to your concern about activating/deactivating - CC will allow you to deactivate "remotely" when you open an app on a machine and you've already hit the activation limit. You get a prompt that allows you to deactivate existing installations - so that's improved from the older versions that are creating hassles for you now.

Dylan, I have a similar set of gear and just added the 300 as well, and after much research I added the Airport Security to my Christmas list.

It was a tough decision between the Security and the International, but I really like that the 70-200 can stand up in the Security - that saves so much room for other gear.
