What about the higher ISO with the 1ds mk2? How does that compare to the 5D Classic?

Hi RLPhoto,

It's a 1Ds, would that sway you anymore?

I have a 5 D 'classic' that I use as a second body (to a 5D mk2). I have the chance to basically swap the 5D 'classic' for a 1DS mk2.

Should I do it?

Anyone got some good pros and cons ?

Thanks for your time

Third Party Manufacturers / New Sigma Lenses - Shipping Availability
« on: October 24, 2012, 08:11:50 AM »

I keep searching and searching but I cannot find the answer! Does anyone know (or have a guess) when the new Sigma lenses will be available (in the UK)? It's the 35mm that I'm interested in more than anything.

EOS Bodies / 7D Firmware?

Back in June a 7D firmware was declared to be in the pipeline with an August release:

Well, it's August.

Anyone heard anything else?

I have both lenses.

I was considering selling the 50mm (to fund the 85mm L) but I've now decided to keep both the 40 + 50.

In my opinion the 40mm IQ is better than the 50mm. OK, you're missing out on some f-stops but the 40mm for me just 'works'. I use it on a 5D and a 7D - on both it's fantastic. I'm keeping the 50mm for those times when the light is really bad! (I shoot weddings - some venues are just so dark).

I had the 35mm f2 but that was just a 'toy', I wanted the 35mm L but just couldn't justify the cost, then the 'forty shorty' came along and I totally love it.

A quick few test shots with the 40 shorty here (they are not that exciting though!):

Hi Everyone,

I used the 85mm again today- something is not right with it.

...but I love it as 85mm on my 5D and also as 135mm on my 7D.

I've decided to send it back and get it looked at.

I won't be getting the 135mm L. I'm going to give the 85mm another shot - I may even buy another one and see how I get on. I'm also considering the Sigma 85mm f/1.4.

Thanks to everyone for their opinions, much appreciated.

PS - Sigma 85mm f/1.4 - a worthy contender?

@Cosk It's a focusing issue - within a few metres it's not too bad (especially now that I've micro adjusted on the 7D), but anything with a bit of distance, say 6+ metres and its open to guessing what it will do - in/out focus. I cant trust it.
Maybe I've got a bad copy.

I really don't think I'd use the 135 L on the 7D, its more for the 5D.

Current lens line up -
17-40mm L f/4,
40mm f/2.8,
50mm f/1.4,
85mm f/1.8,
70-200 L f/2.8

Bodies - 5D & 7D

I'm really not liking the 85mm f/1.8 - I find it too unpredictable and unreliable (especially on the 7D as a 135mm equiv.) I'd love to get the 135mm f/2 L.

Here's the plan : Sell 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 and buy 135mm f/2 L.
(The 40mm pancake is brilliant and the IQ is better than the 50mm in my opinion.)

Lenses would then be -

I shoot weddings, portraits etc.

I'd appreciate people's thoughts.

Yes, this happened to me too, on the first day of use. Like everyone else, I took the lens off the camera and replaced - problem sorted.

I'd forgotten about this incident, it's never happened again since (after a further 3 weeks or so of use).

I might be selling the 50mm soon! I need to sleep on it

Thank you everyone

PS - Any last input before I hit eBay?!?

@smithy : I'm using it on a 5D and a 7D so I've got a 40mm lens on one and a 65mm on the other I guess.

It's a weird one to say that I prefer the 2.8 to 1.4. Personally, I find the 50mm f1.4 soft and unpredictable at 1.4 and I tend to use it at 2.0 or 2.2. When I think of it like that then the 40mm wins the battle - as it's lighter, sharper and the difference between 2.2 and 2.8 is negligable.

I think I want the 135mm L, that's the real problem! Unless I ditch the 50mm then there will be no 135mm!

Lenses / 40mm Pancake Killed the 50mm??
« on: July 16, 2012, 07:14:41 AM »

I've had my 40mm f2.8 STM Pancake for a few weeks now. It's barely left my camera. I love it.

I'm seriously wondering if I'll ever use my 50mm f1.4 again - ?

OK, the 50mm is faster but I reckon the IQ from the 40mm is better. Plus, there's something about the 40mm that just 'works' for me.

Basically I wondering what other 40mm users think?

(I'm also thinking about selling my 50mm to fund the 135mm L, so I need a bit of convincing please!).

Any thoughts?
