Yes, this happened to me too, on the first day of use. Like everyone else, I took the lens off the camera and replaced - problem sorted.

I'd forgotten about this incident, it's never happened again since (after a further 3 weeks or so of use).

Rhys.

Thank you everyone

Rhys.

PS - Any last input before I hit eBay?!?

@smithy : I'm using it on a 5D and a 7D so I've got a 40mm lens on one and a 65mm on the other I guess.

It's a weird one to say that I prefer the 2.8 to 1.4. Personally, I find the 50mm f1.4 soft and unpredictable at 1.4 and I tend to use it at 2.0 or 2.2. When I think of it like that then the 40mm wins the battle - as it's lighter, sharper and the difference between 2.2 and 2.8 is negligable.

I think I want the 135mm L, that's the real problem! Unless I ditch the 50mm then there will be no 135mm!

Dilema!

Lenses / 40mm Pancake Killed the 50mm??
« on: July 16, 2012, 07:14:41 AM »
Hi,

I've had my 40mm f2.8 STM Pancake for a few weeks now. It's barely left my camera. I love it.

I'm seriously wondering if I'll ever use my 50mm f1.4 again - ?

OK, the 50mm is faster but I reckon the IQ from the 40mm is better. Plus, there's something about the 40mm that just 'works' for me.

Basically I wondering what other 40mm users think?

(I'm also thinking about selling my 50mm to fund the 135mm L, so I need a bit of convincing please!).

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Rhys

I'll second that.

Some new tweaks would be grand news...?

Lenses / Re: 40mm f2.8 STM - Lens Hood?
« on: June 26, 2012, 03:09:04 PM »
The one I bought (see link above) allows the cap to be fitted with the hood still on. But, the hood won't flip round for 'storage' when not in use.

I bought it purely for protection

@revup67

- Yes, immortalised forever in one of my student's sculptures!

(Makes good photographic material too)

Thanks all.

I may wait until the ES-52 gets itself over here properly.

Maybe I should just indulge it's tiny proportions a little longer!

Lenses / 40mm f2.8 STM - Lens Hood?
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:55:23 AM »
Hi,

There is mention of a ES-52 hood for the new 40mm pancake - nothing fits that description here in the UK.

Would a third party (or even a Canon) 52mm filter thread hood fit the bill?

Cheers

Candyman - good question, one that I am able to answer from experience ! I had the 35 f2 also, used it on a 7D and a 5D, I found it a little unpredictable and unreliable ( and I reckon it back-focused a lot too). The 35 f2 is old technology, this 40mm is far, FAR better in terms of output IQ and performance in general. I don't regret getting rid of the 35mm one bit.

Some more shots with the 7D!

Another trip around the place where I work - I teach Art & Photography - hence the junk.

Hopefully I'll get outside this weekend.

But, to repeat myself - this is a gem of a lens. I'm very, VERY impressed.

The STM is good. Ok, f2.8 isn't as fast as some, but at this price it's a steal.

Seriously, buy one!
