I wish I could say "I don't need another body. But maybe I'll buy 'just because...'"   :P

Save the money or buy something you'll really use.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Buy a 5D Mark III or Wait for ??? in 2014

If you don't need the speed, the III is totally fine. ISO performance is AMAZING and AF is just a nudge short of the 1DX performance. Great bang for the buck.

How about "The Kitty"? They are a new photographer and walk around photography meet-ups timidly. They finally gain the courage to ask a more experienced and accomplished photographer their honest opinion on the Kitty's latest masterpiece. No matter how nice the pro is, the Kitty is crushed and will forever scowl the pro.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Dual CF or Combo memory slots?
« on: January 01, 2014, 09:41:59 PM »
I was quite pissed when Canon delivered their 5D MK III with the combo memory card slot setup. But the more and more I think about it. The more it makes sense to me.

  • Backup. I went with the professional party line that dual CF was necessary in a pro body because you want a backup of your original card. Well, you can do that with a combo setup as well.
  • Speed. CF cards are faster but that really only comes into play when you fill up your camera's internal buffer first. Even with my ancient but awesome 50D, that's a good 10 - 15 shots before that happens. Even the high-level pro sports shooters have told me they've never filled up their camera's internal buffer.
  • Redundancy. I'm referring to needing different memory card formats. Yes, that's a bit of a bummer. It's certainly much simpler and easier to carry 4 CF cards that 2 CF an 2 SD. Totally. Or having to need 4 CF and 4 SD cards? Yes. It's a potential cost increase.

So I'm thinking the benefits of expansion and future-proofing with the SD slots to outweigh the negatives. Ideally, two CF slots AND an SD slot in a camera would be perfect in my opinion. But I don't see Canon doing that. With solid performance specs, you could keep that camera for a good deal longer. Hurting sales.

Your take?

I have heard nothing but great things about this lens.

I have the f1.4 version and use it for everything. Love the image attributes and quality. Though not the sharpest wide open. Which isn't a deal killer for me.

Love that Zeiss is getting some due.

Never thought much about the 24-105 f/4 L. But at that price....

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS-A1 with Hybrid EVF? [CR1]

I think the 'A1' is just a prototype designation.

EVF? Well, okay. It's going to happen sooner or later. As long as it's implemented well.

The 1DX is a GREAT camera. I drooled over it via the youtube video and a Canon rep demo'ing it. I too bought into 'the unification of the 1-series'. It sort of makes sense.

But as a fashion and portrait photographer, I'm more interested in dynamic range vs. speed. And at the end of the day and looking at images, it doesn't offer any improvement over my 5DMKII. I think the 1DX is a big jump for sports/action photographers. But fashion and portrait? Nada.

Well, we're talking September when it will be shown. Plenty of time to stir up rumors  ;D

I just hope it's not a 'nice update' to the 1DS MKIII. It's got to kick ass. Resolution is good. But tonal-range has to be dramatically improved. There's just no reason not to expect that.

An 'equivalent' huh?   ;)

Well, at least they are coming out with a successor. I only played with one once.  I was extremely impressed by it.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Canon EOS Rebel SL1 $369 at Amazon

Amazing! Seriously, a Panasonic Lumix DMC LX7 compact was on my list. But for $369, the SL1 just shot up a few slots. Not nearly as pocketable as the LX7, but would be an excellent street/travel camera.

Wow..  I've been wishing how I could have one of these for my event photography. The ISO performance of this over my 5D MKII is truly impressive.

Very good. The more competition and choices, better for the consumer.
