SO   What i get from all this is to  use it if you need lines to be straight in an image, don't use it if detail is the most important factor because it softens or   makes it less detailed(even though no one provides visual examples), don't use it if it messes with the composition too much ( if that is  important.) Vignetting is totally  optional.

I am testing it  now. I guess I will stick with it but I will  manually adjust the vignetting if I think it is needed to make a pic better to me. Thanks for the help.

Lightroom 4.  I  have been using raws all the time now and I finally checked the lens correction button and I noticed my images getting brighter and stretched (undistorted?) I mainly shoot in clubs and some  portraits. I honestly didn't noticed  the pincushion effect but now that I know about it I am wondering if  my images might be better in the long run   if I correct  them. I use a 24-70. I get slight pincushion on the long end. SOmeone help me thanks....

I have two Canon 600 flashes and the Canon ST-E3-RT.  Awesome set-up for me, but the ST-E3-RT lacks an AF assist beam, so in very low light (single 60w bulb in a bathroom for example) it gets dodgy, but outside as a fill in set-up it's fabulous, fast, works, and is very portable.
The ST-E3-RT is awesome. I love using it.

I've found that if you half press the shutter button and wait for the AF  light to and point to flash, it takes 3 sec or more.  However, if I just press the shutter button down all the way, it focuses in about 1 second or less and fires with perfectly sharp focus.

I hope this is true for most situations. Everyone pleasure try this!

It's is just the camera. I do club photography with  a 7D and 5D3(once in awhile) .  I don't have the issue with the 7d.  I might spend tomorrow in the house messing with  the AF point settings  with my 5d and see what I find out. To the guy that mentioned spot focusing, the 5D3's  manual supposedly mentions that it will be harder to focus with spot metering. That is definitely a tip off to small spots make AF  assisted focusing harder to achieve. AS I mentioned in my  thread,  the 5D3 will actually focus faster with no AF assist in some situations. The 7D is the total opposite for me. I can barely auto focus  a dark club without my flash attached to my 7D.

Check page 77 of the manual. There is a mention of this, I think:

* With Single-Point Spot AF, focusing with the Speedlite's AF-Assist beam may be difficult
* If the camera cannot focus with the EOS-dedicated Speedlite's AF-Assist beam, set the AF area selection mode to Single-Point AF (Manual Selection) and select the center AF point to focus.

This sucks
I never use single point spot but from reading that it seems like the auto focus points might be too small and are missing the assist beam? Is this the problem???

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Nikon Sales Rising

The only  thing I can see causing this are  extremely high prices and  a lack of innovation.  I don't think the sensor stuff and DR stuff matters to the  majority of DSLR users. I know quite a few pro-photographers and not one of them  ever mentions dynamic range. It sounds like a lot of benchmarking tech  geeks are on the message board. It reminds me of how people  judge graphics cards  by using 3DMark scores  instead of actually using real games to judge their GPU.  Even though I have a 5D3, in 2012 a camera should have built in wifi and usb 3.0 for $3500. I wonder how much these cameras actually cost to  make and how much  profit would they lose by adding little modern conveniences.

5D III has some issues with AF-Assist Beam under low light - Speedlite 600. You might want to double check.

It is still an amazing flash. I actually bought 4 and I use them for photoshoots. I started using them for the club months later  and  that was when I found out about the issue. One thing I have never tried was all points auto AF selection. I honestly don't trust that setting especially  when using  a 2.8 aperture  but next time I use it at a club I might try it.

Thanks for the info Ray
2 - 5 seconds!!!! I can manual focus quicker than that. Maybe the tape from the light leak fix is interfering with AF assist  :o :o
For me that's getting on for not fit for purpose. I look forward to seeing if/how this is addressed
I wish I could manually focus in the dark. LOL

I would say a normal af time is less than a second and this  problem makes it last a few seconds. maybe 2-5. Once it gets a focus lock it is  good for the next few shots. The percentage is almost 100% of the time.  I am almost afraid to use that combo at the club.  This shot right here took too long to take then I wanted to do one more shot and the "Luigi" got impatient and left. The images are beautiful from the camera, so i hope they recognize and fix this problem.

I went to  every major Canon forum and  a lot of people are saying that the 5D3 focuses slower with the AF-Assist beam on when using at least a 600ex with the camera in  dim or  dark situations when this topic is brought up. I do club photography and I find it embarrassing  to stand around for  a long time trying to get a focus lock. Sometimes people walk away from the shot or look at me like I am crazy. The only way I know how to focus faster in situations is  to play with the AF-point and move it towards the red light on the subject. Lets make a petition or something because I also own a 7D and it focuses  in an instant with the same flash. It is the camera!
