It arrived!

I get this:

Immediately after starting a 90+ minute conference call.

So over an hour later I collect this:

With this inside:

(I'm not thrilled about the dent in the box, but it shouldn't matter.)

And this inside of that:

And now I have to wait for this...

I'll say one thing.  I deeply wish instead of the 5D3 it had been a 1Ds IV and they didn't "merge" the 1D and 1Ds lines.  I really wish it had been the 1Ds 3 with very high ISO capabilities and auto ISO in manual mode.  Valid points.

I'm holding out hope for a high-res body, either in the 5D line, the 1D line or somewhere in between.

While I understand the folks lamenting the loss of the 1.3 crop I'm a big fan of full frame and like that Canon is moving there along the whole pro line.

A high res, medium ISO, low frame rate, FF body would do wonders for that line, IMO.  It doesn't have to be a 1Ds, but it does need the IQ of one... :)

The 5D3 is kind-of a FF 7D so the ultimate lineup could be a 70D (king cropper), 5D3, 3D (high res, FF studio/landscape camera) and the 1Dx...

I guess I'm pretty much agreeing with you using different names for the devices. :)

What other upgrades were you looking for when you went away from the 5D II and were considering a 5D III?

Build/weather sealing, resolution, DR, etc.

The 5D3 is pretty much the same as the 5D2 in those regards with a bit more power in the in-camera noise reduction.

The AF improvemens are worth the camera alone, of course, and I really considered it carefully but, in the end, I decided that I could afford the best and, since you only live once, I didn't want to compromise at this point.

I'm keeping the 5D2 (my wife claimed it) so it's likely that we'll upgrade it for her eventually.

For me, the AF improvements (drastic), plus being able to do AUTO ISO in manual mode at all possible ISO values, HDR, and Multi-Exposure, I'm not sure what else there would be as an "upgrade" without completely crossing into a different camera line.  In fact, I don't know how they could have possibly upgraded the 5D Mark II any more than they did.  I wish it had the color rendition of the 1Ds III at low ISO value.  Maybe I'm just wishing there were a 1Ds Mark IV :)

For me, it would have been pro-level (1D) weather sealing and higher resolution.  AF point metering would also have been a nice to have.  Auto-ISO is nice, as are the additional multi-exposure modes, better video, etc. but the 1Dx has 'em all and more.

Yeah, I'm basically looking for a 1D lite, but for $3,500 I think that's within reason.

When the 5D2 came out it was a revolutionary jump in DSLRs with the resultion, video and so on.

The 5D3 feels like what the 5D2 should have/could have been if Canon hadn't gimped the AF on it...

For those of you who have purchased a 1D X, I'm curious as to why?  What makes it worth it to you?

For me it was a combination of mild disappointment with the 5D3 spec and the desire (and ability) to have the best I could.

Don't get me wrong, I think the 5D3 is an exceptional machine, but I wanted a bit more from a 5D2 upgrade and the 1Dx fits the bill.  It is a no-compromise system with a pro build, the absolute best AF system available and the best ISO performance as well.

I was saving for the 5D3 and had a bit of a windfall that allowed me to reach a bit higher.  I considered the 5D3 when introduced, but it wasn't enough to sway me.

So I wake up this morning to a new email from b&h...

The canned response you get informing you that one of your items remains on backorder. For a minutes my hopes were up :(

Same here.

Scared me for a second but then I checked the order number and it's for the 24-70 II.  I'll be getting a few more of thsoe before they finally ship...  :(

IIRC Amazon was a week behind B&H and Adorama for shipping the 5D3...

I ordered 3/14/12 1:47 no news from B&H  3801052XX

I'd check on the order page.

B&H hasn't sent me anything yet other than their regularly scheduled "item on backorder" emails.  I've had to seek out whatever info I've gotten to date.

Your order number (a phone order, I presume?) is lower than mine and you ordered a bit earlier in the day so, in theory, yours should be in the same state as mine or further along...

Good luck!

Mine says the same as Neuros and StantonS!

I just checked and mine too! (or mine four?)

I'm assuming, being 5:00P in NY/NJ, that it'll be on its way Monday or thereabouts.  Sounds like Wednesday delivery for me... :D

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II Delayed Again
« on: July 06, 2012, 12:30:06 AM »
Oh the irony.

I have one on pre-order as the expected "walk around" lens for my 1Dx.  So as the 1Dx is delayed and delayed I start to think that the actual ship times will get close.  Now my 1Dx is likely to ship "any day now" and BOOM - the 24-70 II jumps out another 6 weeks...

I tried but I couldn't leave well enough alone.  Curiosity got the better of me and patience lost out. :)

Instead of calling I tried chat this time.  The first response was the canned (literally cut-and-paste) "we don't have an estimate... thank you for your patience..."

I pressed a little indicating that I knew orders placed just before mine had shipped.

From there:

Him:  Okay I'm looking further into this for you.
Erik:  Thank you, sir. :)
Him:  Great News!!
Him:  I see we have a shipment on its way from the manufacturer, and you are on it.
Him:  We should be filling your order within the next week or so.

I read that as, basically, I'm in the second wave.  Not too bad for being on the left coast and being a bit slow on the trigger...

Phone order placed on 3/14 just after noon PST.  Email confirmation time stamped 3:31 EST.

Negative confirmation from a B&H Rep: "Item is backordered. We don't have any additional info..."

Item is listed as "backordered" on the order tracking page at the B&H website.

Has anyone that ordered on 3/15 received this information?

I just spoke to them and was given the standard "no updates" line.

I placed my order by phone on 3/14 and the order confirmation email is time stamped 12:31 PST.
