Selecting the right tool for the job and NOT just the photographer behind it.

EX. even the most skillful photographer won't deliver soft wedding pictures with shalow DOF taken with an i-phone or a compact camera.

As it comes to hardware, the better helps most, but its not always needed.

Sure its best if you have the cleanest FF sensor and fast and sharp lenses to shoot in low light conditions costing a 5 digit price range

But it doesn't mean that you can't do eg, landscape with an entry level camera with a 3 digit price range.

So i disagree. The photographer only is NOT good enough without the appropriate hardware for each job, and its always BEST to demand from companies to upgrade the hardware and not being afraid and safe by telling that the photographer is a god with a magic wand that can capture everything.

This is why i love Canon
- color
- lenses
- DPAF

However the 80D with touch and flip screen plus the 60fps will be an ideal piece of hardware for video makers.
Its clear that 7D 2 aims most to photographers who need high speed burst and telephoto lenses x 1.6

my list:

- better DR or higher resolution (i'd vote better DR though in RAW and NOT JPEG  ::) )

- fast SD slot

- some better ergonomics like assigning autoISO to a button, or even when the SET button when is assigned to adjust the ISO value by holding it and rotate the front dial, in the current condition/firmware it doesn't go to the autoISO, and you have to set it manually each time from the ISO button.

- PLEASE please! assign a button to custom WB, rather than taking an image, set the wb to custom, load the image.. DAMN! one click thats it! RATE and magnify buttons are useless assign one of them at least!
who uses RATE and JPEGs in such a beasty camera anyway..

- Restore magnification buttons in live view like its been in mark II or any other model. (hard to find the magnification button in the night which is in the other side of the camera)

well actually most of my requests can be done with a firmware upgrade :D

in two words?, more button customization
but an upgraded sensor with higher DR is a must for 5D IV

and the conclusion is HIGH ISO KING ::)

i doubt if high iso RAW files are gonna be any better than 7D 1

definitely fake. :-)

But it shows really well, how freakin' easy it would be to build a worthwhile EOS M3.

@Canon: stick the darn 70D innards except mirror and OVF into an EOS-M2 body, add a great EVF on top, slap on a nice fully articulated LCD to the back and make the handgrip so much larger, that it will fit a regular LP-E6 battery for 500+ shots a charge. Sell @ 699 body only and 799 with kit lens and still make more profit per unit compared to any Rebel and 70D, since it is so much cheaper to build than even an SL-1 mirrorslapper. Significantly less labor cost, since many steps in assembly, calibration and QC are eliminated from the manufacturing process, once the fickle mechanical moving parts and separate phase AF and viewfinder prism are gone.

i own both lenses too,

the STM motor is a pain in the ass if you want to focus manually through live view.
the USM feels better and is much more responsive.

As it comes to AF, the USM is faster too.

The STM is smooth and quiet on video mode but NOT faster than USM :(

The rest i don't give a damn.
I was expected some new L primes, some wide like 12mm-something and 16-35 III :(

The 24-105 STM however indicates that the next canon FF will have DPAF. Lets hope a swirl and touch screen too. As for a better sensor? dr, shadows banding fix, etc.. i doubt it. That's the curse of being a canon user.

However Canon lacks a sharp and fast ultra wide angle zoom.

The 16-35 2.8 II is good for 5D not good for 5D2 5D3 and the 16-35 f/4 IS is great but f/4 :(

I'm very dissapointed with the canon line,
no new L fast primes, no fast UWA, no 14-24 or even wider, sigma has 12-24, no new high megapixel cameras for landscape photographers.

They invest too much on video and they have completely forgotten photographers and don't tell me, a good photographer doesn't need evolution and good photographers take good pictures with any equipment. If thats the case lets go back to film then.

i both have the 85 1.8 and the 100L
and the 70-200 2.8 IS II

i gotta say, each lens is for a different purpose.

the 85 1.8 has very nice bokeh, but suffers from CA, the good news is that its cheap and lightweight
the bad news except the CA is the minimum distance.. you can't "crop" a face with it as you would with the 100L
many many times i find this issue irritating and thats my main difference with the 85 1.8 which is a great lens.

The 100L is made for macro, which means that you won't have that softness as you would with the 85 1.8
way too contrasted but excellent image quallity, and nice build. Plus the IS and of course you can shoot tight portraits with it without cropping in post afterwards.

The 70-200 2.8 does a bit of everything. The good news is that this lens is sharp and focuses blazing fast. It doesn't think. It acts.
The bad news except the cost is the weight.. not versatile. I use this one for weddings mostly where i need a tiny window to shoot through at 135-200mm @ 2.8 but not to take photos of children at home. hell no. It is scary and uncomfortable.

I'd probably use the 85 1.8 or the 50 1.4 which i also have and love for that

Bottomline:
if i have space and time to play with i'd use the 85 1.8
if not, 70-200 2.8
I think i'm gonna sell the 100L, i'm too lazy to shoot macro anyway. Besides macro lenses are useless without proper lighting.

a 12mm prime would be nice too
Sigma's 12-24 is a nice toy but way too soft in term of sharpness :(

Hi wickidwombat

I made the test
2 shots using same ISO (200), speed and f stop
one shot with D+ and another one without
the one with D+ gave me better color results in the overexposed areas when lowering the highlights in ACR
