My weakest area is right in the middle of the blue-green transition area, which I believe is common for men.  My visual acuity isn't what it used to be (need reading glasses) but I'm happy with the results of this test.

I love the 40.  My normal use for this lens is everyday except the weekend, I have it when I drive to or from the office. Like Trumpetpower said: looks like a high-end P&S camera .
Another excellent use is when I'm using 70-200 but I want to have something good for a relative wide image.

It's a lightweight sharp lens that works.. If you're into street photography, it's a nice lens for it (full-frame: 40mm, crop sensor: 64mm).

I did notice that my lens tends to forget to focus (when on AF), and the remedy is usually to remount it again; I think something is wrong with the connectors. I checked with another friend that has it, and he's encountering it too.. Anybody else experiencing that?
From usa.canon:
Firmware Version 1.2.0 addresses the following phenomenon.
1. If pressure is applied to the lens barrel while the lens is mounted to the camera (pressure can be applied even while attaching the lens cap or while carrying the camera with the lens attached in a bag), the autofocusing function of the lens may stop working.
Firmware Version 1.2.0 is for lenses with Firmware Version 1.1.0. If the lens' firmware is already Version 1.2.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
The lenses with the following serial numbers are equipped with Firmware Version 1.1.0:
The third digit in the serial number is either 0, 1, or 2 (xx0xxxxxxx, xx1xxxxxxx, or xx2xxxxxxx).
Lenses with serial numbers other than those listed above are equipped with Firmware Version 1.2.0.

something not right about those 24-70 sample images. no way there is that much distortion. the images have been squashed or something surely?  ???

Since 5D3 appeared with its surprises (not all pleasant for me),I decided that I will never treat Canon's new products with enthusiasm or pesimism before these being properly tested. I am excited for 0.7x close-up (24-105 is very bad in close-up aplications) and I think I could loose 35mm for near macro capability.
The price is in the line of Canon last year products, no suprise here: the new 1k is 1,5k in lenses price. Maybe a new 100-400 at 3.5k will be a bargain next year   :D
But in fact even Nikon increased prices at new lenses (see 70-200 f4).

Official MTFs posted by Canon looks much better than 24-105 at 24mm both f4 and f8. Edit:  And worse than 24-70f2.8II.

Something to worried about: MFD 200mm, lens lenght at 70 is 124mm so MFD to the front of the lens = 30-40mm so shoot only static or dead subjects :D

Definitely yes, it will be a major step for you. I did the same from T2 to 5D2 and I never looked back.

Is it possible to handhold 100mm 2.8L macro without a flash?
For macro work it's not possible for acceptable details and colours.

I use Kenko Close-Up +3 PRO1 D AC 77mm with 24-105 and 70-200 f4 (with a step-up ring). I spent more money for Kenko (and only for +3) because of AC - achromatic. The image is free of chromatic aberrations and, because of that, more sharp.
