Lenses / Re: Things to get when you purchase a 600mm?
« on: November 15, 2013, 03:21:21 PM »
I don't have the 600mm, but I do have the 500mm v1.

I can echo similar requirements to buy as others have here.  I bought the Gitzo 3541XLS because I got tired of bending down to look through the viewfinder when shooting landscapes.  It's also a pain shooting up into trees at birds if you cannot get high enough to allow for the camera body dropping below your shoulders.  The 3541XLS solved that problem.  Is it a pain to pack...yep, but I manage.

Just recently purchased the Canon 52mm drop in circular polarizer for shooting birds and whatnot in, around and on the water.  I can't believe I waited so long to get one.  It just works.

Wimberly II Gimbal...heavy, but works great.  Had a sidekick.  Movement in the Gimbal is so much more natural.

Lenscoat...get it.  My tripod head fell off because I didn't check the set screw on my tripod head on a regular basis.  There was a warning on it about 4 years ago.  Everything hit the gravel trail, breaking my Canon 1.4x vII extender in two pieces.  One piece stayed with the Canon 1DX, the other on the 500mm lens mount with the Wimberley.  Not one scratch on the lens exterior. Can't say the same for the meniscus glass element in the front.  The coating got dinged by all the gravel that bounced up into it.  At least it's replaceable.  The newer 500mm and 600mm Canon lenses don't have it.  That's one way they lightened them up.

Insurance...see above.

I purchased the Lenscoat hood cover to replace the bulky one from Canon.  Like someone mentioned (maybe Neuro) it's a pain to slip on without dang near pulling your tripod and gear over onto you or the ground.  Something with a velcro strap would be better.

Canon 1.4x III extender is imperative to have.

The Canon 25mm Extension tube + the Canon 12mm extension tube are nice additions to the toolbox.  I shoot a lot of small critters with these attached.  They help get a larger image size by getting in closer to your subject.  One caveat when using them...loss of infinity focus.  If you are staying with closeup stuff, no biggie.  If you go back to shooting birds in flight or wildlife, remember to take them off.

Leg wraps...purchased or made.  I made mine with camo tape and pipe insulation.  Not so much for the cold; more for padding against my sore shoulder.

I just received the advisory by email from Canon USA.

Me too.  Always have received them via email, usually about the same time it's announced on the web.

Lenses / Re: Using two Canon EF 1.4X entenders
« on: February 15, 2013, 12:14:12 PM »
As mentioned earlier you cannot stack two Canon 1.4x extenders.  I have recently stacked the following: Canon 1DX + Canon 500mm F4L version I + Canon 2x II + Canon 1.4x II.  This shot was at ISO 5000, 1/400, +2 EV at effective 1400mm on tripod.  Full overcast about an hour from sunset.  The camera showed F8 and 1000mm.  Auto-focus did work with center point focus.

I'm adding the photo to this post.  Not an award winning capture.  I was just trying it out to see what it would do with branches, low light, etc.  This is about a 60% crop into the photo.

Canon General / Re: Hey Canon, I've got cash to burn, but...

Have you considered stacking photos with what you have?  Shoot in vertical across the landscape, overlapping shots and make 2 square meter prints or whatever size you want once cropped in.  I'm just sayin...there is a way to get what you want with what you have.

Ok I tried what you said Neuro but the pictures keep coming out black.

I'll see what I can do.

Ha, ha, ha, ha....forgot to say remove lens cap.  Priceless!!!  Almost fell out of my chair laughing as soon as I read your reply.

Finally received tracking # on 3/14 order 1019892xxx and email showing shipped.  B&H charged my card on 7/17, showed in stock and sent to warehouse, pending UPS 3 day del'y.  Finally shipped just now with Monday delivery.  That should gie some of you an idea of wait time.

Ordered 3/14 late.  Charged on card on 7\17 early afternoon...now at warehouse for two days.  Just got off from Live Chat...will finally ship today with order 1019892xxx.  So, figure two days from notice of charges for it to actually ship.  Some lucky ones got it sooner.

Mine was ordered on 3/14 at 9:25pm CST (10:25pm EST).  I did not receive an email from B&H saying my order had been filled on 7/17.  I received an email on 7/17 at 7:15pm CST from my credit card company stating it had been charged $6,799 from B&H.  I still have not received notice from B&H, but my order info when pulled up showed...In stock, sent to warehouse for UPS 3 day delivery.  It is now 7/18 at 8:13 CST and B&H still shows in warehouse, no tracking # as of yet.

So, if you really have a tracking number on an order later than that, you were lucky for whatever reason.  I'll have to call them tomorrow to make sure it doesn't hit my front door and I'm not there to receive it.

Ordered 3/14 at 9:25pm CST with #1019892xxx.  Received an email at 5:11pm CST Sunday 7/8/12 from B&H that they had not received the merchandise from their supplier.  It was still on backorder.

I should say, 'large number' is relative.  Compared to the 5DIII, the numbers are small.

At almost twice the price I guess it's not surprising.  Plenty of griping over the $3500 too.  Well, hope you get yours soon and mine follows not too far behind the rest.
