EOS Bodies / Re: What's Next from Canon?
« on: February 15, 2014, 11:02:51 AM »
didn't we hear that Canon has an exciting pipeline last year as well and if I'm not mistaken the year before?  At this point, it's put up or shut up, I happy with my current kit and Canon won't be getting another dime until I actually see something worth buying...

Lenses / Re: IS Versions of the 50mm, 85mm & 135mm Coming? [CR1]
« on: November 27, 2013, 05:29:42 PM »
I know I'm in the minority, but I find the 50mm range boring, I much prefer 35mm so no interest there.  I'm very happy with my 85 1.8, adding IS won't do a thing to freeze motion, it might allow you to go up a click in ISO but then I consider it a wash.  If a 135L f2 IS is released, THAT would get my attention and my money.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Sigma Sports Line Updates Next? [CR1]

I for one would seriously consider a 400 2.8 from Sigma, they've recently been putting out some stellar optics and I have no doubt they can do it again in the super-tele range.  I wouldn't use the 400 enough to justify paying over $10K for the Canon, but I'd still like to have one and this would be a nice compromise.

Canon General / Re: Patent: EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS
« on: September 21, 2013, 01:25:44 AM »
Considering the price of the 24-70 non-IS, I can imagine Canon asking $3k for this lens if they plan to release it.  Way out of the price range of most serious amateurs and many professionals at that.

Personally, i've had my fill of Canon sticker shock, I'll be picking up the current version, but only after I sell off my 7D and EF-S glass to partially fund the purchase.  Canon should have released this first at the current price point, I'm certain they would still make a nice profit per lens and probably had more sales....

I've been hoping for a Sigma 400 2.8 for quite a while.  I have a fund to buy the Canon 400 2.8 but I'm not sure as a hobbyist I'll ever actually pull the trigger.  ~$11K is a ton of money for something I wouldn't use very often, I'm sure the Siggy street price would be several thousand cheaper which would be much easier to swallow.

Lenses / Re: LensRentals.com Tests the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x
« on: June 07, 2013, 03:15:26 PM »
The 200-400 is a nice lens no doubt, but for that kind of money, I'll continue saving my pennies for the 400 2.8.  With my 1.4 tc, I'll still be a stop faster.  The 200-400 is, I'm sure a great lens, but I don't quite see the value per dollar, if it was ~5-7K, I would have been among the 1st to order one....

EOS Bodies / Re: 21mp Sensor in the 7D Mark II? [CR1]
« on: April 21, 2013, 01:51:59 AM »
The technology is here. And the fact is, that that is the only thing we now.

See the sensor in 5D m3 with high ISO performance and good IQ, the 6D with WiFi and GPS, the 7D with fair weather sealing and high fps and several Canon cameras with video technology and the AF tech ass well and so on.

From a Canon board and share holder point of view the most important thing is to get as much money out us as possible. Period!

This means that we will get the new tech in small steps so we will buy a lot of cameras.
ONLY the competition will give us a camera with all known tech in ONE camera.

So pleeeeease Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and all you other great camera manufactors make dam good cameras in a dam  hurry!

For me to buy a 7DII, sensor performance will need to be greatly improved.  I don't care about being able to push an underexposed shot 5-stops, it's just not the way I shoot.  I do want better tonal transitions and cleaner low and high ISO performance.  The thing that stands out to me is how "durable" APS-H and FF Canon raw files seem to be compared to APS-C files.  My 7D files require more sharpening and more overall PP compared to FF raw files, and that's understood, but when I do PP aggressively, the images start to fall apart pretty fast.  If that can be improved, I'll stick with APS-C because I'm still reach limited, otherwise, I'll keep my 7D and add a FF body....

EOS Bodies / Re: Announcements on March 22, 2013? [CR1]
« on: March 08, 2013, 01:34:13 AM »
That's a hard one to say.... Remember the powershot N, anounced January 7, still not in stores.....

I have seen everything from on sale the day it was anounced to lenses that were anounced 2 years ago and we still have not seen.

My guess would be about a month or two delay between announcement and release.

A month or two if we're lucky, I know about the Tsunami, production issues, etc.  But Nikon has new equipment shipping almost immediately after they announce it.  Canon, a much larger company with far greater resources can't seem to release anything on time.  I just don't get it.

I'm waiting for the 70D release because Canon MUST have an all new sensor by now.  I can't imagine them going with the same 18MP sensor they've been using since 09, but I've been wrong before....

still yawning and still waiting for a FF MILC, 1st company to do it gets my money.  High performance APS-C DSLR for sports & wildlife + relatively compact FF mirrorless for street and portraits is my idea setup...

I'd love to see what kind of margins Canon makes on those great whites. :)

sure, there are plenty of theoretical combinations that would could surmise as more flexible.  I'm talking about pitted against current, real-world lenses, it's the most flexible bird+sport lens on the market.  plus, I'd disagree that a 200-400 f/2.8 wouldn't be hindered by its massive size.  even for field sports, you want to be able to move (even more so with birding), and just because it's on a monopod or tripod doesn't mean that mass and inertia become meaningless.

I don't entirely disagree with you.  This lens is Canon's long overdue answer to Nikon's 200-400 and throwing in the builtin tc is a pretty good display of one-upmanship.  I'm sure it will have stellar optics and f4 was probably the best tradeoff between speed and "portability".  But I guarantee you if someone built my theoretical fast 200-400, you'd see it on the sidelines and out in the wild.  I'd just spend an extra hour per week in the gym, although I don't consider any of the superteles all that heavy. :D

actually, I know a lot of bird and sports shooters that would love to have this lens.  it's pretty much the ultimate long lens in terms of flexibility, first between having the 200-400 zoom range, and then being able to throw in a 1.4x extender without having to unmount the camera, attach the extender, and then remount the camera.

It's a versatile lens no doubt, but I wouldn't consider it the "ultimate".  I think the ultimate would be a 200-400 f2.8 with no builtin tc.  Sure it would be an absolutely massive lens, but a fast 200-400 for big field sports would let you shoot all day and well into the evening with amazing subject isolation.  Throw on your own 2x tc and you've got yourself a killer birding lens at 400-800 f5.6.  Now that's a lens I could see myself selling a car for :D

The 200-400 is exciting, but I'm still saving for the 400 2.8....
