I use fairly new Eneloop rechargeables, got them last year and don't think they are anywhere close to the 1500 life cycle recharges limit the packaging notes. (Packaging says they can be recharged up to 1500 times but i doubt I'll push that before buying new ones.) I didn't know that about either the drain rate on the ST-E3 or the way the flash heads drain, but it makes sense. I reloaded my flash heads with freshly charged batteries twice (I always refresh in between church service and reception,) and then I did again during a break at the reception when everyone was eating.I never use rechargeable battery's for one reason 1.2 volts vs 1.5 volts, the flash gets more power faster from regular 1.5 volt batteries. Try one then the other and I bet you see a heck of a difference!
I have another wedding this weekend, I plan to watch for similar issues ..and I doubt I powered down the St-e3 or e flashes before switching them around - really good suggestion that I"ll watch for next time!!!!

Was feeling spunky the other night and decided to clean the dust from my mirror. Was using a cotton swab and 90% isopropyl alcohol (1st mistake). Thought what the hell, I would clean the focus screen as well (2nd mistake).Sometimes doing it yourself just isn't worth it!
For reasons I still don't understand the focus screen ended up with "milky" stains in 2 areas. It kinda reminded me of hard water deposits on shower glass. I am not sure if the tiny water component in the alcohol stained it or if the swab damaged the etching on the screen. Whichever it was, it was not coming off.
Of course the screen is not supposed to be user replaceable (and just why not Canon??? the 5D2 was...) and finding a OEM replacement was proving hard. Then I found a service manual, got the part number and found they are only $11. Part number is CY3-1655-000 FYI...
It's not that hard to actually replace. Be sure you have the right sized screwdriver as the screw heads are soft and seem to be harder to find than the screen. When you are putting the retaining spring back **do not touch the screen with anything**...that plastic is as soft as putty.
So now I have a rocket blower, PecPads and 99% alcohol to clean the mirror. But I am never going near that screen again...
surely - a 'flagship camera' is the model almost every one aspires to own?Having used and owned both a 5d II and 1 ds markIII it's fair to say all they really share is similar resolution. Metering, IQ , shadow detail, midtone color, skin tones all go hands down to the 1ds
Having tried the 1DsIII - i was glad i opted for 2x 5D2. Twice the kit for the bucks (and the 5D2 did not lose much to the 1DsIII except maybe build quality and robustness). In fact that very argument is the reason the 1DsIII died an early death for most wedding and landscape photographers!
The same would apply to the 1DX - having tried, i make no apologies in saying i would love to own one - soooo many benefits over a 5D3, but the simple fact is, were i to get out today with £5k for a new body, i would come home with 2x 5D3's & a battery grip for one of the bodies.
What i find really interesting is how ALL manufacturers seem to be creating blurred lines between 'flagship model' and what most people consider more than acceptable - Nikon D4 and Nikon D800? Which would you call the 'flagship model'?
I would like to solicit opinions here. I shoot a lot of sports pics of my kids. I'm currently using a rebel T1i which takes great pictures, but I usually miss some great action scenes due to the slow frame rate of the camera. I was looking for used cameras that would allow me to maintain my lenses (EF-S) and I found a used canon 40D that looks gently used. The price is great at around $350. Of course, I would love to have a 7D, but I'm watching my pennies lately and can't afford it today. So, what would you do? Would you save up for the 7D or go ahead and not miss this spring season's shots using a 40D?The 40d is a wonderful camera, much better IQ than a 50d, it also has 14 bit color. If the price right it's very useful with great color, great in camera jpg.

Canon urgently needs to replace the 16-35 and 17-40. Or at least the 17-40. That's even if they bring out a 14-24 or similar. Otherwise, yes, get the 21 because nothing from Canon compares.I love my 16-35 at F5.6-11 yes it's a little soft at 2.8 but it really mates nicely with my 5d mark II
Thanks for everyone's input I do appreciate it. I am a hobbyist so yes the 5D will be more than sufficient and the 1Dx does seem to be a bit of overkill. Like Schruminator mentioned previously the ability for faster focus on the 85 1.2 is applealing.Faster still does not mean fast! The 85 1.2 is slow no matter what, if you get a lens like that live view is your best friend
I've been told here and by some close friend to get the 5D and invest in in glass. I can't place my order till after 6:30 at B&H so I have the day to think about it. Thanks again
