Lenses / Re: Rebate Ending Soon? When's The Next One?

Does the rebate ending in the USA mean the prices on the grey market will rise? Am close to ordering a couple of things, and can't really rush the purchases!

Lenses / Re: Canon 100mm macro IS vs non-IS - any further input?
« on: January 06, 2013, 05:39:57 AM »
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think L glass is covered by worldwide warranty where as non-L is covered by a warranty from the region you purchased the lens in, ie Australia, Asia, Eu, or America. So if you're purchased a lens of eBay from a grey market reseller, you'd be better off with the L glass. Resell value may also hold up a little better. But why would you ever want to sell the 100mm macro, they're awesome.  ;D

No longer the case, since late 2011 I believe Canon changed their warranty to only cover L lenses within the country they are sold from, just like everything else Canon.

Lenses / Re: EF 24-70 f/4L IS Resolution Tests
« on: January 04, 2013, 06:49:58 PM »
From the tests it seems reasonably sharp. It is weather sealed, has IS, is small, and has a lot less distortion. It would be perfect to carry as a companion to a couple of primes.

Exactly what I hoped this lens would be! I agree, overpriced still but hoping to add it to my 35/85/100 kit (along with a 70-200).

Just hope it has corner sharpness stopped down and I am sold!

Where were you able to find a 24-70 F4 to play with ?

I thought they weren't coming out until later on this month ?

Digital Camera Warehouse in Australia says in the next week or so they will have stock.

I beg to differ. The 24-70 f/4L IS will go nicely with the 70-200 f/4L IS. Only 24-70 2.8L II goes nicely with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. You have to match your lenses or they will feel uncomfortable  ;D
Does not make any sense to me. I have various lenses with various f stops and they all go 'nicely together'.

Neither to me - it depends on what you want. If a shallow dof is required f2.8 on a wider lens is more important than on a tele lens. If the lens is required to be "fast" for low-light shooting it's the other way around.
Hasn't anyone noticed the smile icon  ;D in my post ?

Yeah mate I sure did :)

When is this coming out?

Will go nicely in my kit with 35L, 85 1.4, 100L. When I add a 70-200 f2.8 (mk II or Tamron) it will be complete (for now).

Haha yeah good point - I think I will need f2.8 in the tele end though, I have that covered in the wide-normal end. Big brother will have to take it easy on the little fella ;)

Looks like one amazing zoom lens, can't wait for the reviews!!

Had my eyes on a 16-35 and then a 35L, but have decided to wait for this baby to come out and will see if I lack aperture or UWA once I've spent some time with it. Have never used any of the 24-x lenses, glad I waited for the best one!

I looked at the 70-200 II MTF's and the 24-70 II charts are even better - looks amazing for a zoom!! I have the 100L, and yes it's incredibly sharp!

Seriously people like you make me furious beyond all reason. If you look at the MTF graph at the tele end this lens has performance that is nearly identical if not better than the 100mm f/2.8 IS Macro, with the wide end only trailing slightly.

The 100mm f/2.8 IS Macro is one of the sharpest lenses ever made. It has around 60% more resolution than the 24-70mm Mark I. SIXTY PERCENT. The Mark II on the telephoto end should be as sharp in the extreme corners as the mark I was at the god damned center.

Can somebody plz point me in the direction of the MTF charts? I saw them a while back, but can't find them again.

Can't wait for this lens!!!
