Canon General / Re: Spartans, What is your profession?
« on: March 01, 2015, 12:05:36 PM »
I work in the commercial real estate industry as a portfolio manager and strategy guy; shopping centers, office buildings, and industrial buildings. Nature photography is a release for me. I shoot for fun. One day when I grow up I'll figure out what I really want to do.

Just think how many more books Scott Kelby can sell every time there is a new version of LR!

As for me, shooting is my joy; post processing is not something I find enjoyable to do.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS-1D X Replacement in 2016 [CR1]

Canon will have to do a lot more than increase the megapixels before I will be interested in a new camera. The 1D-X is simply wonderful. I'm considering buying a second camera body if the price continues to fall. I can safely say I am very happy with the megapixels the 1D-X has and wonder why I wound need more.

Business of Photography/Videography / Re: The Pros or The Enthusiasts?
« on: January 30, 2015, 03:47:34 PM »
I'm very much the enthusiast; 1D-X with lots of glass, not interested in shooting video, travel to shoot landscape, nature, wildlife, and have no intention of trying to sell any of my work. In fact, I don't even have a website. I have no interest whatsoever in shooting weddings, portraits, and the like.

I'm becoming a bit more careful about having to purchase the "latest and the greatest" when the 1D-X is such a great camera for the shooting I do. I'm keen on the new 600mm lens though. Simply fantastic.

Lately I've been experimenting with different papers for my Epson 3880 printer and am becoming more and more interested in printing. I don't print much except when a friend asks for a print of one of my images.

My chances of turning pro? Zero. I'm having too much fun being an enthusiast!

EOS Bodies / Re: 50mp Cameras Coming in March [CR1]
« on: January 24, 2015, 04:50:42 PM »
I'm not excited about 50 megapixels in that my 1D-X does everything and more than I need. I suppose if I were to determine I needed a monster file size I'd go rent the camera for a day or two. I'm more interested in increasing my glass arsenal with a the newest Canon 600mm lens and if Zeiss comes out with something new in the wide angle arena for my 1D-X I'll be keenly interested.

I have to wonder how many people actually need huge files as compared to the megapixel marketing war that is taking place. If you really want file sizes that will choke your computer, go rent a Phase One IQ280 back that shoots 80 megapixel files!

From my recent shoot at Bosque del Apache National Game Refuge, New Mexico. These guys were trying to decide whether to take off in such cold weather.

Any strap or connection can fail, that's for sure! I'm much more confident using the Custom SLR C Loop strap mount as the connector to the camera than I am the BR. Of course one must be sure the SLR connector is properly attached to the camera.

To each his own. I just hope that everyone avoids lens and camera crashes no matter the brand of strap they use!

I'll never purchase a BR strap or anything else they make. Just looking at the swivel and clip tell you they are not up to the job of holding a heavy camera and lens. Basically the straps are junk.

1D X Sample Images / Re: Any Thing shot with a 1Dx
« on: September 18, 2014, 07:21:45 PM »
Shot over this past Labor Day at the Lake Clark National Park in Alaska. Great fun! The photos are not fully processed due to my laziness but nevertheless tell the story of an amazing camera and a 300mm f/2.8 lens with extenders from time to time.

Lighting / Re: stopping motion with a light trigger

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to respond and provide such meaningful and helpful information. I sure know a lot more about triggering the camera shutter and flash using a timing device than I did when I started!

Wishing everyone much success in your photography efforts.

Lighting / stopping motion with a light trigger
« on: September 03, 2014, 05:55:23 PM »
I'm interested in knowing if anyone is doing stop motion, say a drop of water bouncing up after it hits water, a wine glass shattering and capturing the wine as the glass explodes, that sort of dramatic photo style, and what type of light/shutter trigger you are using to make those captures. Thanks much!

Nicely stated, mackguyver!

I'm one who believes in taking a gun to a knife fight. So, I buy equipment that might be slightly beyond my skills set at that time and work towards growing into the better equipment. I'm not so much interested in buying new equipment at this point as I am using the great equipment I am so lucky to own. Oh I might buy a trigger to photograph lightning but that would be about it.

I don't use 600mm lenses often enough to own one, but they are easy to rent and return.

All of that being said, the cliche about the best camera is the one you have in your hand is usually true. I've had great luck with my Ricoh GR, and thoroughly enjoy shooting my 1D-X. And, I am very happy with both cameras!

Runnerguy, well at least on my Mac monitor (pretty good with colors overall) the image of the Maui sunset you shot is extremely over-saturated. Just a helpful comment.
