I am glad I returned to this thread because it's now the first of September and Canon have not yet come up with any competition to the RX100, not only that but we now have the Nikon Coolpix P7700 for Canon to compete with - almost a clone of the Canon Powershot G12...

If Canon doesn't bring out a Sony/Nikon killer by Photokina I suspect I am going to be tempted to buy the Canon G12 clone, the Nikon P7700. of course it will also depend on whether I can get my mits on one before I go away at the beginning of October.!
A successor to the S100 will be announced in 4-5 days. I had both the S100 and RX100. I actually liked to S100 better. The RX100 was more bulky. Despite a bigger sensor from Sony, I preferred the images from the S100. The RX100's ISO performance is only a slight better. It's hard to tell with the naked eye. Anyways, I eventually sold the RX100 on craigslist.
I suppose worst comes to the worst, I could always get a heavily discounted G12 if the new Gxx is not available by the time I go away?

From what i have read recently THE SONY RX 100 would seem to fit the bill best except, for me at least for the limited zoom, the lack of the articulated screen and the very high price. (To me a flat screen in bright sunlight is a big failure).

One I think missed from the list would be the new Nikon P7700 not available until the 27th of the month. Looks good, has a swivel screen and a decent lens, ƒ2 to ƒ4, 7x zoom no viewfinder but it keeps the size down. Looks neat too.

Next week should see the G12 replacement announced for Photokina,  if rumours run true, it will be interesting to see how much difference there will be between the old G12 and the new version G12+/G12a/G13/14?

Most of the other cameras mentioned are not really pocketable but at least some of them including the G12 fit in a bum bag, I always carry my G11 in my bum bag and the swivel screen can make it really unobtrusive.

If  cash is short then the G12 is being heavily discounted at the moment and was considered very highly especially if the new version is a lot more expensive but not a lot different. I wait with bated breath as I desperately want  a new camera to replace my G11 for my next big holiday.

I must say that if the new G12 doesn't come up to my expectations
CMOS sensor, brighter lens, at least 6x zoom, digit 5 processor. I'll be going for the Nikon P7700.

A big deciding factor for me will be availability, will the new G12 be just announced or only available and in the shops for xmas!?

(the) G12 Replacement that isn’t much different than the current one. Same sensor size as the G12.

Then I wonder what we can expect?
Same size sensor but CMOS
digic 5 processor
better lens?

and it will be called the G12A ?

I have no inside info - just guessing based on technology and Canon's other products.

I think the body size, lens, and ergonomics of the G12 are already pretty good - I can see why Canon doesn't see a need to change them.

But I think we'll see the G12 replacement (G14, at a guess) has the CMOS 1/1.7" sensor from the S100 (or slightly newer), DIGIC 5, improved movie mode (1080p/60 would be great),

And maybe, maybe, if we are very lucky, it'll have hybrid phase detect/contrast detect focusing (like the latest Rebel).  That would mean a huge (and much-needed) improvement in focus speed.

If it has even 2/3 of those, I'll buy one the first day it's on the market to replace my G11.  I've been waiting a long time, and the G1X isn't what I'm looking for.

I agree totally with that last paragraph, problem will be when they will hit the market, I am in the market for a new camera to replace my G11 now but I suspect we might only see an announcement which might leave us hanging for a while :(

ps
touch sensitve screen?

Surely if the new 'G12' is not going to be much different to the old G12 then if the 'improvements' dont warrant the higher price then it might be worth buying an original G12 at the presently discounted price?

I wonder what the chatter means by 'not much different'? Same size sensor but CMOS? Digic 5 processor instead of 4? Wider lighter lens say 24mm to 180mm ƒ2 to ƒ4?

Of course the final question will be will it be just an announcement or available and in the shops before the Nikon P7700 which is almost a clone of the G12 but without a viewfinder? Love to see comparisons between the two.

update,
according to some birdy here on Canon rumours a G12 successor is 'likely' to be announced in the week prior to Photokina!
We wait with bated breath!
Will it be another EOS M type announcement?
Announced now,

available xmas?  >:(

Your underwater images of the Lionfish and the nudibranch are truly stunning although nudibranch ...001 doesn't load.
Thanks for taking the effort.
Let's see if Canon does something about that shutter lag next week :)

My needs are very simple
a PS G14, with a 24 to 240mm ƒ2 to ƒ4 zoom with an 18Mp 2/3rds CMOS backlit sensor in the same size or smaller body than the present G12!
now that's no asking too much is it

I think you might have convinced me, let's just see what arrives next week and at what price?
Be nice though if there's a G14 with a 24mm to 200mm ƒ2 to ƒ4 zoom, a digic 5 processor and a CMOS sensor ;)

I get your point about buying a G12 on sale especially if the improvement is only incremental but I wonder what is meant by the latest comment.

More PowerShot announcements are expected, a G12 replacement I’m told is likely, as well as a new fast lens PowerShot.

What is meant by 'Im told is likely' a guess, an unsubstantiated rumour not even a CR0?

I had not noticed the difference in the ISO differences between the G11 and the new P7700 and anyway I wonder how you can say that you used the G11 at such a high ISO as when I used it at high ISO for a night shot I found the resulting image almost unusable because of the high noise level even using noise ninja I was unable to produce a satisfactory image at that level.

hey why's everyone only talking about the big bodied professional and semi professional cameras what about the midrange cameras like the G1X, the EOS M and the now hinted at Powershot G12+ there are some of us who dont want dont need, cannot justify a big bodied camera but do want to control what we shoot and do want a reasonable IQ.
For me that means that if Canon do announce a PS G12+ I'll be a happy bunny and won't have to move to Nikon or Sony to satisfy my need for a replacement for my G11.

EOS Bodies / Re: Announcements Before Photokina

5th September,
I like the latest update, lots of new toys to be announced next week before Photokina.

For me the one I'll be looking out for will be the next Powershot G model. As the the Powershot with a brighter lens, wasn't that hinted at before the last two Powershots were introduced? ƒ1.8 or ƒ1.9 lens?

The only problem wil be whether it will be another carrot to dangle in front of us like the EOS M announced a month ago but not available until late October, will the next PS Gxx be announced next week but only available in time for xmas?

5th of September.

Tomorrow will be the 6th of September and Photokina will be 11 days away, so who in their right mind would buy a G12 today regardless of price if a new model might be announced any day?  :-\

Especially when there are now stiff competitors to the G12, in the first instance the Nikon P7700 which is almost a clone of the G12 but with better sensor and much better lens. Or the Sony RX100 which although it has a larger sensor (and price tag) has a poorer zoom but nevertheless gets rave reviews (apparently). What about the Panasonic Lumix LX7 which has a great Zeiss lens but even though it has a new sensor has gone the opposite way of many others as it seems slightly smaller, can they really get better IQ out of a smaller sensor with less pixels?

PowerShot Cameras / Re: A Powershot update by September?

I have decided to wait.

I had a bad experience with an old Nikon (S10) during the week with a flat screen where all I could see outdoors was the reflection of my face even with a screen hood. Seems silly to rush to buy something only to regret later. My G11 has been repaired and I am now aware of it's low light limitations and understand the problem with ficussing in macro mode - it only works on wide angle!

If Canon dont eventually bring out a successor to the PS G12 I will go for the Nikon P7700 which looks almost as though it were Canon's successor to the G12 even to the articulated screen.
