EOS Bodies - For Stills / Which to upgrade first? Camera or Lens
« on: April 18, 2013, 04:22:04 PM »
I am considering an upgrade to my equipment

1D M4 -> 1Dx
500F4 IS -> mark 2 version of this lens

Already have the 5DM3 but love the feel of the 1D series, though it is a lot of $ for a body.

Mostly shoot wildlife with the 1D and use the 5D for macro and scenics (the tiny bit I do of city scapes).

Really don't need any new lenses - in fact, I need to have a garage sale and join a 12 step program for lenses and bags.

Originally I was very skepical  about the 1Dx but the more I hear about it, the more I am interested.  I will be borrowing one for a shoot next week, so I will have hands on experience then.

I could also wait, to see what Canon introduces  this fall.

High MP camera (probably a replacement for the 5DM3, not sure if it would be wildlife camera)
200-400 zoom in lieu of long lens

Lenses / Recommendation for lens 18-20 mm
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:57:37 AM »
Hi

I have the 24-70 II and 14mm.  Both are excellent lens as is the 24 II (which I don't currently own).  However there is a gap here.  the 17 TS-E would fill the gap but it is big, heavy, cumbersome and expensive if only used as a straight 17.  There is the Nikon 14-24 but it is awkward to use (though not impossible to use).

Other recommendation?  Nothing in the Canon lineup seems to fill the gap without giving up on IQ.  Any recommendations.

Thanks

Lenses / Anyone from US buy from Canada Camera
« on: April 15, 2013, 04:06:20 PM »
Their prices on the Great Whites are attractive but not sure what, if any, import taxes, duties etc I would owe?

Has anyone purchased from this store and had a lens / body shipped to the US?

Lenses / Any news / sighting of the 200-400 in March (or early April)?
« on: April 09, 2013, 02:37:06 AM »
All is quiet about this lens - perhaps too quiet.  What gives?  Has Canon made final design decisions and is now producing the few thousand (tens of thousands) they expect to initial sell?

Software & Accessories / Bag while I am a "tourist"
« on: April 08, 2013, 11:09:17 PM »
Hi

I have been a member of the bag of the month and a closet full of bags showing my excellent standing in the club.  I dropped out of the club about a year ago and need to add to my collection (yes I will sell unused bags).

What I don't have is a shoulder bag (showing my bias) or some sort solution for carrying gear while I am a tourist or doing the limited amount of street photography.  [NB most of my photography is wildlife with big equipment for which a back pack works well].

Wonder what recommendation people have, not sure I want to go with a belt system as I envision using the bag/system while touring with my wife.  I hope to carry 5D/6D, 14, 16-35, 24-105/24-70, possibly 70-200 F4 or 70-300 (not the 70-200 F2.8), possibly 100 macro, and flash.  Is this too much?  I could see taking either the 14 or 16-35 but not both.   Thoughts?

Thanks

Lenses / Can the zoom fish-eye give rectilinear images on FF camera?
« on: April 08, 2013, 10:17:35 AM »
Some one told me that the 8-15 fish-eye zoom can produce rectilinear images on a FF camera.  Is this true?????

At all focal lengths or only at 15 mm?   Or is a PS manipulation?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / CF card recommendation for 1DX
« on: April 08, 2013, 02:18:11 AM »
Hi

I am considering a 1Dx and also about to buy a few extra CF cards (32 GB).  At times I fill the buffer on my 1D M4 (which the 1DX would replace) and would like to know if there is any difference between SanDisk Extreme Pro and Lexar 1000x cards as far (1) ability to empty the buffer/keep up with the camera and (2) reliability.  Until recently I have had excellent success with the Sandisk cards but have added a few Lexar cards to my pool to test on my 5D M3 (slightly faster).

Also any other cards recommended?

Canon General / Ever borrow from CPS
« on: April 05, 2013, 01:18:08 AM »
Just wonder for those of you have borrowed from CPS, how do you handle insurance?  Risk it?  Can you add the camera/lens to your homeowners/schedule equipment policy?

Any recommendations about the process.  I hope to borrow a 1Dx for a shoot in the badlands end of this month.

EOS Bodies / Impact of falling Yen on Prices
« on: April 04, 2013, 06:06:05 PM »
Last November the change rate was 80 Yen to the $.  Today it is 93.  That is a 16% changes.  Does anyone know how Canon prices?  Especially as international rates change?  Who profits (Canon US or Canon corp) when the exchange rises?  Will we see new products introduced at lower prices (such as the 200-400 F4), more details, or simply Canon profits increase?

Adobe is pushing Creative Cloud and I wonder if it is worth the $30/month.

A PS upgrade is $200 and a LR upgrade is $100.  Cycle > year, so the annual cost is $200-250.  Creative cloud is $360 / year.  Plus price will probably go up after a year.

Is there some other advantage to Creative Cloud that I am missing?

Site Information / CR navigation on ipad
« on: April 03, 2013, 11:00:44 AM »
I read and sometimes post (tho typing on my ipad is awkward and slow).  One problem I have is advancing to the next screen - hitting the tiny numbers on the top left is difficult.    It would be helpful if there were first, previous, next and last "buttons" by the screen numbers

Thanks

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Low level formatting of CF Card
« on: March 31, 2013, 06:42:35 PM »
To those who have discussed low level formatting of CF cards, does it matter if you format the card as Fat32 or NTFS.  I found out the hard way that Canon uses Fat 32 format, not the NTFS.  When I formatted the card in NTFS format, the card could not be read by my 5D M3, while in Fat32 format it could be read.  Of course after I formatted the card in the camera (regardless of initial format) everything was fine.

BTW - for the Mac guys/gals out there.  How does Mac deal with Fat32.  I thought they did not support it - for external drives to be readable by a Mac, they needed to be NTFS.  Is that correct?

Thanks

Lenses / Expecting some LARGE announcements this Monday
« on: March 30, 2013, 09:18:42 PM »
My sources tell me that on Monday we will see lots of incredible announcements - Canon buying Hassy or will it be Leice.  Perhaps a MF Canon to fit Leica glass.  Nikon licensing their 14-24 to Canon.

What are you expecting on Monday, the first of April?
