Hi

I am considering buying Focal for my 5DM3 and soon (I hope) new 1Dx.  Lens range from 14mm through 500MM IS original version, plus zoom, ....

As I look at the difference between Plus and Pro I notice that Pro adds bells and whistles (save charts, watch analysis as it progresses), plus some unspecified tools "more control over the camera setup, ... and the addition of several other tests: Aperture Sharpness, AF Consistency, Dust Analysis and the MultiPoint Focus Test."

Does these add with MicroFocus adjustments or more diagnostics about the lens.  Since I have had the lens for a while, I can not exchange them for better copies at the local camera store.  Do the additional tests help or are they simply expensive bells and whistles.

Thanks

Third Party Manufacturers / Canon 14 mm vs Zeiss 15 mm

How do they stack up.  I really don't need auto focus and seldom shoot wide up.

ANy other recommendations?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / LCD Protector
« on: May 01, 2013, 01:38:32 AM »
Reading previous threads there seems to be a reluctance to use screen protectors.  I find that my rear LCD screen has smudges on it - in the upper left corner where my nose presses against the screen.  And occasionally I find a small scratch on the LCD (okay, the screen protector on the LCD screen).

There are 2 types of screen protectors - film and glass.  The film is available for the 1DX while the glass is not (at least not at B&H).

Any other recommendations?

Just wondering if anyone has found a place to recycle 125ml (Epson 4880) cartridges and get any $ back.

I could just recycle them and let the recycler have all the profits but wondering there is anyone interested in buying spent cartridges?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Will this allow F8 focusing on 5DMIII
« on: April 21, 2013, 10:59:10 AM »
Just wondering if I placed a very thin 3rd party extension tube on the camera and then attached the lens/converters, would I be able to focus at F8 or higher?

Lenses / Canon L Glass is currently priced at over $1200 / pound
« on: April 19, 2013, 11:52:00 PM »
Okay I'll admit I am crazy enough to put this analysis together.  Then again after a year of retire (from Director of Marketing Analytics at a major CPG company) I miss number crunching.

Glad to share the data, I am sure that there a few items I missed.  Right now all I am interested in is the top line.  When I went deeper into the data, I found that older lens (2006 and early) had lower cost per pound $750 versus more current lenses $1,200.  Lots of reasons for this - could be new lenses are more technologically advanced and harder to manufacture, include more expensive glass and metals, harder to raise prices than introduce a new product at a higher price point ...

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Guide for 1Dx
« on: April 18, 2013, 04:26:53 PM »
Hi

I am borrowing a 1Dx for a shoot next week.  For to test and to use exclusively.  I have never even held one though I have 1D M4 and 5DM3.  Does anyone have advice on settings or can point me to a good reference site on how to the most from this camera.

Thanks

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Which to upgrade first? Camera or Lens
« on: April 18, 2013, 04:22:04 PM »
I am considering an upgrade to my equipment

1D M4 -> 1Dx
500F4 IS -> mark 2 version of this lens

Already have the 5DM3 but love the feel of the 1D series, though it is a lot of $ for a body.

Mostly shoot wildlife with the 1D and use the 5D for macro and scenics (the tiny bit I do of city scapes).

Really don't need any new lenses - in fact, I need to have a garage sale and join a 12 step program for lenses and bags.

Originally I was very skepical  about the 1Dx but the more I hear about it, the more I am interested.  I will be borrowing one for a shoot next week, so I will have hands on experience then.

I could also wait, to see what Canon introduces  this fall.

High MP camera (probably a replacement for the 5DM3, not sure if it would be wildlife camera)
200-400 zoom in lieu of long lens

Lenses / Recommendation for lens 18-20 mm
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:57:37 AM »
Hi

I have the 24-70 II and 14mm.  Both are excellent lens as is the 24 II (which I don't currently own).  However there is a gap here.  the 17 TS-E would fill the gap but it is big, heavy, cumbersome and expensive if only used as a straight 17.  There is the Nikon 14-24 but it is awkward to use (though not impossible to use).

Other recommendation?  Nothing in the Canon lineup seems to fill the gap without giving up on IQ.  Any recommendations.

Thanks

Lenses / Anyone from US buy from Canada Camera
« on: April 15, 2013, 04:06:20 PM »
Their prices on the Great Whites are attractive but not sure what, if any, import taxes, duties etc I would owe?

Has anyone purchased from this store and had a lens / body shipped to the US?

Lenses / Any news / sighting of the 200-400 in March (or early April)?

All is quiet about this lens - perhaps too quiet.  What gives?  Has Canon made final design decisions and is now producing the few thousand (tens of thousands) they expect to initial sell?

Software & Accessories / Bag while I am a "tourist"
« on: April 08, 2013, 11:09:17 PM »
Hi

I have been a member of the bag of the month and a closet full of bags showing my excellent standing in the club.  I dropped out of the club about a year ago and need to add to my collection (yes I will sell unused bags).

What I don't have is a shoulder bag (showing my bias) or some sort solution for carrying gear while I am a tourist or doing the limited amount of street photography.  [NB most of my photography is wildlife with big equipment for which a back pack works well].

Wonder what recommendation people have, not sure I want to go with a belt system as I envision using the bag/system while touring with my wife.  I hope to carry 5D/6D, 14, 16-35, 24-105/24-70, possibly 70-200 F4 or 70-300 (not the 70-200 F2.8), possibly 100 macro, and flash.  Is this too much?  I could see taking either the 14 or 16-35 but not both.   Thoughts?

Thanks

Lenses / Can the zoom fish-eye give rectilinear images on FF camera?
« on: April 08, 2013, 10:17:35 AM »
Some one told me that the 8-15 fish-eye zoom can produce rectilinear images on a FF camera.  Is this true?????

At all focal lengths or only at 15 mm?   Or is a PS manipulation?
