Lenses / Re: Canon EF 300 mm F/2.8 L IS USM Lens with a 2X III TC
« on: September 21, 2013, 08:04:20 PM »
Many thanks for the great info posted.

What would we consider is a good airshow lens then?

With our without the TC and something that is affordable but while retaining good quality.

The 300mm f2.8L mark 1 was recommended to me by a Flickr associate who uses it to get some amazing shots with a 2.0TC.

This shot was taken by him with the EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM +2.0x

This shot is lovely and sharp - just what I am looking for.

Lenses / Canon EF 300 mm F/2.8 L IS USM Lens with a 2X III TC
« on: September 20, 2013, 07:17:51 AM »
Anyone used the Canon EF 300 mm F/2.8 L IS USM Lens with a 2X III TC?
How does it perform for AF, etc?

It will be the Mark I version of this lens I will be using - for air shows mainly.

Looking for something that will focus quickly and be razor sharp - I have heard very good reports of the 300mm F/2.8L and it;s reputation for sharpness but am concerned how the 2X III TC will effect it.

Body I will be using is a 5D mark III.

This really has turned into a fantastic thread - many thanks to everyone for making it such a fantastic read and posting some amazing pictures - keep it up!  :)

Just shows the world what a talented bunch we are.

Flying in a Spitfire is a dream I don't think I will ever achieve so flying next to one is maybe the next best thing.
Love the pictures of Miss Pick up - she is a dream to photograph and nice and slow too!  :)

Some lovely photo's.  I'm currently using a 7D with 70-200 f2.8 and 100-400 f5.6 at airshows.  Has anyone moved from a 7D to 5D3 for airshow photography, if so how are you finding the switch?  Not a pic from an airshow, but flying in a helicopter next to a spitfire with goactionstations in the UK.

Would love to do this mate - how do you get on it?

Some more finished shots....

Into War.... by Scott_McPhee, on Flickr

Can't decide which one of these next two I prefer - it's two different shots taken about 1 second apart.

Scott and nebu, very nice shots!  The first one of the Typhoon has too much of that luminance noise that I don't care for, though...looks like the 5D3.

Probably because it is a 100% crop shot at 400mm and I have sharpened it - I only kept this shot because there was something about it I liked.

Looking forward to see the rest of them. I love this thread.  8)

Gave up processing them at 2am - back onto them again tonight and hopefully get them finished.
Will be posting some on Flickr but most will go onto Facebook.

It was the last Leuchars airshow this past Saturday - took over 1400 shots and here are the first ones finished.

Enjoy!   8)

I would shoot about 800 - 1000th second shutter speed (maybe higher if you need to cover fast top rope moves).
Auto ISO so you don't need to worry about it - the 1Dx has great ISO performance anyway.

Don't use flash - it will distract the wrestlers and make your pics look crap.

24-70mm f2.8L for me if you can get close.

Try and get in-between the ropes to get some good action shots - use centre point AF with expansion if need be.

Maybe try and get access to the ring early and run through some test shots pre-show too.

Hope this helps  :)
