Software & Accessories / Re: another Gitzo question
« on: August 31, 2012, 02:25:00 PM »
You should get the traveler gizo tripod! I will go to a 3 month trip to Japan next year and i will get that tripod also.
My intention was to get one that suited traveling and my other work related shooting but i bought a little heavier gitzo tripod and it is too big and heavy for serious travelling.

Gitzo is not overpriced, it's called quality.
Where else can you find small, super light, sturdy tripods?

I had a couple years to prepare before i started my own photo company.
When i started my company i started with two 1D Mark IV cameras, ts-e 24mm 3.5 II, 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2, 70-200 2.8 IS II, 24-70 2.8.

I had a lot of gear to start with but now that i've been pro for 2 years and i know excactly what i need i pretty much only use 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2 and those are what i really recommend and for almost job you could get by with those. Sometimes i need to use the ts-e 24 II and 135mm 2.0.

I shoot portraits and weddings. (i sold both 24-70 and 70-200 because i am in love with primes)

Hope this helps, if you are short on money for the "best" equipment i recommend bying an L glass prime of your most needed focal lenght first with a zoom or two and build up later on.

Lenses / Re: Canon 24 f/1.4L and 24mmL TS-E ii

I love my ts-e 24 3.5 II. I would not give that up for nothing but i did just buy a 35mm 1.4 to complement that with autofocus.

The 85 1.2 II no question! It is the best lens for portraits and will bring superb image quality!
My favorite lens on this planet.

Lenses / Re: Walk-Around Lens For Canon 1DX Camera
« on: August 30, 2012, 01:35:50 AM »
50 1.2 is with me anywhere i go! To me it is the perfect walkaround lens.
I have the 35 1.4 also but if i had to choose i would take the 50 everytime.

As you know anything below 50mm will create a bigger sense of space and most of the time i dont like the look.
And the 50 is a much better portrait lens.

To me the 50 is wide enough for a walkaround lens even with 1D IV 1.3 crop.

50 is weather sealed, the 35 is not.

I mostly use focal lenghts of 50&85 and for variety and special occasions i have tse 24, 35 and 135, but most the time the 50 is on my camera.

Lenses / Re: Considering the 70-200 f4 is for my next lens
« on: August 29, 2012, 02:00:02 AM »
In your place i would start with improving the most used focal lenght.

To me 85mm 1.2 II is just that and there is no zoom lens or prime under 100mm that can get close to the image quality. I have had the 24-105 and it is just a different world shooting with a good prime.

I also have the 70-200 2.8 IS II, and if you don'r really need the extra stop of light get the f/4 because it's half price and half weight. Just yesterday i took a 3 hour walk with my 1D IV & 70-200 IS II and the whole time i wished i would have had one of my primes or something lighter.

Go for primes is my suggestion. Keep the 24-105 and get the 85 1.2 II. You can do a lot with those lenses.

I am lucky to have the finance and to have this my profession. I use a TS-E 24 3.5 II, 35 1.4, 50 1.2, 85 1.2 II, 70-200 2.8 IS II. But i started with just a 5D Mark II with 24-105 just 3 years ago.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 1DX vs. EOS 5D MARK III for Weddings,
« on: August 23, 2012, 03:31:14 AM »
I shoot a lot of weddings with my 1D Mark IV, for a long shoot like weddings are i would choose the 1DX for sure.
the 1D bodies are designed to have better ergonomics and become a part of your body easier.

I love 1D series bodies. I could go on and on why i think they're better. Buy one and you'll never go back.

Software & Accessories / Re: Are lens skins worth it?

I think skins for lenses are a stupid idea. "pimping" iphone cases is fine but professional lenses? Please.

EOS Bodies / Re: Weather sealed 1D4?
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:29:18 AM »
Canon doesn't say it's "water proof", weather sealed is different.
Everyone knows that in practise they can take a mean beating from the elements but also that if you have it in heavy rain there is always a risk.

Start carrying an umbrella with you. I don't expect any camera to work in crazy rain for hours and hours unless they say it's actually waterproof. The reason why many think they are perfectly waterproof is because of pros that have 1D bodies to spare willingly take the risk of shooting in extreme conditions to get the shot they look for but they have back ups with them and don't cry over lost bodies.

Lenses / Re: 17 ts-e vs 24 ts-e
« on: August 19, 2012, 05:15:32 PM »
I have been using the ts-e24 3.5II for over one year now and i would not change it to a 17mm.

I like the look of the 24mm focal lenght much more.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 1D X won't wake from sleep

I had that issue a few times on my other 1DIV but it was only that day and never came back again.

I keep all my cameras at 1 sec sleep.

EOS Bodies / Re: 1dX dust in viewfinder
« on: August 18, 2012, 11:57:42 AM »
I use a canon anti-fog eyepiece. It's just a regular eyepiece with a glass in between. No dust gets to the optical glass behind it but the view is just a little darker and the anti-fog coating smudges really quick but i think it is worth using to protect it from rain and other elements.

EOS Bodies / Re: 1DX Worth the Money?
« on: August 15, 2012, 01:54:36 AM »
The 1D X it´s worth the price you pay for it.

If you compare it too the 5D Mark III the 1D X have:
+ better AF
+ better image quality
+ faster
+ more solid
+ 400.000 possible shutter releases to 150.000 (5D Mark III)
- bigger

Compared to the 1D IV:
+ better AF
+ better image quality
+ faster
- no crop (you need a TC or a longer lens for the same shot)

If you have only the money for one body buy the 1D X. If you have the 5D Mark III or want buy it, buy the 1D X instead.

If you have the 1D IV and you need the crop-factor. Hold the camera as long as possible.

My opinion is that the "big" size of the 1DX is an advantage, not a negative. 5D has nothing to grip on to.. i have big enough hands that the only way to hold the 5D is with my first 2 fingers and my thumb and then the camera's sharp edge rests on my palm which is annoying.
In 1D camera's my whole palm and all fingers are comfortably on the camera vertically and horizontally.

Your second negative was the missing 1.3x reach.. i believe that you would end up with better image quality and better noise when the 1DX is cropped to 1.3x.
And to me full frame is much more useful than a cropped sensor. if you have money for longer lenses full frame is the way to go! more light in, less dense pixels and better bokeh.

To me the 1DX is simply the best camera available!
