Lenses / Re: Europe Vacation: Equipment Advice
« on: March 30, 2013, 05:20:12 PM »
What kind of travel are you planing? Which countries are you going to visit?
I think some more info would be good for helping you with selecting your equipment.

Personally I would not take the 580EX. The 17-40 might be useful if you are visiting city centers and old buildings.

You could try Calumet, 711rent,  or local stores.

>The EOS-1D X has some traces of the EOS-1D C firmware code and the features are locked. We don’t know how much of the firmware is the same.

For me this statement strongly implies that it can be done in principle....

You might already know the CR guy's review of the lens:

Portrait / Re: Portrait - Trying something new

There is one thing that somehow disturbs me. The guy in the house is far away from the bride, she seems  to be unreachable for him from his point, even with this huge kitchen knife. One could have placed him on either side of the house looking around the corner. This might have added some ""realism"" to the image...

The symmetrical lights next to the head are somehow distracing and science-fiction like, IMHO. I agree with the other posts for the other two lights.

Software & Accessories / Re: On-line Wedding albums

Also you could look into Graphi Studio.  They are based in Italy and have a great design software, although you need to apply to be accepted as a client.
On their website they state that they do only accept professional photographers as clients. do you have any experience if they also accept non-professionals?

I would be highly interested in a company offering high quality wedding albums like Jorgensens or Queensberry do to everybody not only professional photographers. There seem to be hardly any company producing this level of quality which also offer their services to non-professional photographers.
Can anybody recommend a company?

Canon General / Re: Europe trip, 1-2 months

When you are planing to do your trip in April & May, I would at least recommend you start your trip in the southern European countries. You may be lucky and have some nice and warm days north of the Alps, but you have almost a guarantee for this south of it. If you want to go north, go as late as you can. You might want to think about skipping Russia, it is a really long trip, you need a visa and especially cities like Moscow are everything but safe.

Just another comment, generally speaking, the further north you are, the better, the more comfortable and the more on time are the trains...

I also want to through in some places with good potential motives, which have not yet been mentioned:
Alhambra (Grenada), Cinque Terre, Barcelona, Rome (be aware of the pickpockets there!!), Smögen, Kopenhagen, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Carcasonne, Hohenzollern Castle, Strasbourg, Montepellier, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Lake of Constance

Pros only use CF´s. Forget a SD with a SD adapter if you want the best speed.

Thank you all for your answers.
If I were a pro, I certainly would go with the CFs, but as someone who is just enjoying photography in the limited free time, this cheaper solution should be enough as additional backup storage space in case all my CFs are all full.

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / SD cards in SD-CF Adapter for 7d?
« on: August 30, 2012, 03:04:10 AM »
A new 32Gb SanDisk Extreme Pro CF would cost me around 165.00 Euro (205 USD) over here in Germany. The 32Gb Sandisk Extreme Pro SD is offered for 65 Euro. Does anyone has experience using the SD cards with an adapter in a 7D? How much transfer speed would I lose when using this combination? I usually do not need high FPS. For doing single shoots, would this combination work?

I have been to Bryce in Mid-May and there was still quite a bit of snow, it might be the same in October.
If the weather should be too nasty think about Joshua Tree NP, its just a few hours from LA and you can then go up to GC south rim. In sunny weather north rim is not ideal during midday for photography because of the sun standing pposite and already lower in October, if you are aiming at sunrise and sunset its a good location.
Personally I did not like Zion too much, kind of unspectacular to me, but you can do some nice hiking there if your are interested. Angels landing is nice for its view but it is a kind of tourist highway up to the top with paved staires. Arches NP is spectacular indeed, Canyonlands are less spectacular if you have seen the GC before and if you just stay on the paved roads on the upper rim of the NP. To save some time during your trip, Canyonlands might be something you could consider to skip, in my opinion.

For the rest, CaliPH said it all.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Firmware update for 7D
« on: August 07, 2012, 08:15:02 AM »
On the German Canon website, Firmware version 2.0 is only available for Mac OS X .... After installing the version from Canon USA, can I change to German in the language settings? Should be the same then, right?

Canon General / Re: Guidance re: Europe cruise

Swiss belongs to Lufthansa, both are rather indulgent concerning the weight of the on-board language, as long as it does not look really over-sized they usually do not check the weight.
Be aware that this is totally different with the european low-cost airlines like Ryanair, they are very strict and try to make extra money whenever they can.

For all those from Germany. Canon has started a cashback promotion yesterday for lenes, flashlights and extenders. The only details list I found is here http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/03/electronics/features/canon/Canon_CashBack_Teilnahmebedingungen.pdf
