EOS Bodies / Digic 7 Development
« on: September 13, 2014, 09:31:36 AM »
This new processor is the key to high MP cameras.  Doubling the resolution will require 1.414 times the processing power.  The current Digic 6 will drop the 1Dx to 8FPS.  The Digic 7 is going to be a dual Digic 6 in one package which will allow 4x the processing power for high MP, high frame rate bodies.

EOS Bodies / Pricing for the 7D Replacement
« on: August 28, 2014, 10:52:42 AM »
Judging by the specs, the new body should fall between the $3399 list of the 5D3 and the $1899 of the 6D.  I'm guessing a $2599 list.  It won't be below the $1899 of the 6D because the 70D is at $1199 and Canon doesn't want to cannibalize those sales.  If they use the 5D3/6D ratio, then a new APS-C body would be $2149 which would be great and shouldn't affect 6D sales.

Somewhere between $2149 and $2599 is doable unless the used 1D Mark IV falls below $2000

EOS Bodies / 1D Mark IV Prices Dropping?
« on: July 01, 2014, 07:46:24 PM »
It looks like prices are starting to dip and sales of 1D Mark IVs are slowing in anticipation of a new body.  It looks like Canon is blowing out 7D refurbs too.

It will be a 1D Mark V in a 7D size body, hence the change to 1Dx because it is full frame.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Canon 1D Mark IV or 1Dx?
« on: May 29, 2014, 07:46:55 AM »
I finally have enough funds to purchase either a 1Dx but I am not sure if it is that much better than a 1D Mark IV.  I can compare the specs but I'd like to hear from those who currently own both bodies.  Is the 1Dx worth the price of TWO 1D Mark IVs?  Are the better specs worth the extra expense?  Thanks in advance

Lenses / Canon 24mm f/1.4L, Original or Mark II
« on: April 14, 2014, 10:28:47 AM »
I would like to add this lens to my bag, can you guys state the merits of the Mark II over the original or vice-versa?  Is the Mark II worth the $500 premium?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / How to spend $3000 now or keep saving?
« on: December 04, 2013, 07:53:45 AM »
My new camera fund has reached $3000, barely enough for a used 1D4 or a new 5D3.  Looking around, I can also get a Sony A7R with 36MP, ISO 25600 and a 24-70 f/4 FF lens.  Or do I keep going and hope to get a lower priced or refurb 1DX for another $5000.  I would like a camera for low light stage events.

What would you recommend and why?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Rockwood Music Hall

Has anyone shot there and can give me some tips/suggestions?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Shooting a dance performance and rehearsals
« on: October 30, 2013, 04:42:32 PM »
I was planning to shoot with a 100mm f/2.8 IS on a 5D2 and 24-70 f/2.8 on a 7D or 1D3.  It's not my usual cup of tea but I agreed to take publicity shots for a college dance company.  I won't be shooting with flash during dances so any tips ahead of time would be welcome.

This is a 1Gen prototype for checking mechanical fit and function.  I will be testing a 2Gen prototype with a Lee Big Stopper ND filter.  The 2G prototype will be black.  The production model will be optimized for bulk and shortened as much as possible to avoid vignetting

Software & Accessories / Need Monopod Recs, twist not lever lock
« on: September 23, 2013, 08:31:03 AM »
My gear has gotten to be too heavy for my original Slik monopod and I am looking for recs for a sturdier, not necessarily light but not too cumbersome, twist lock monopod in the $100-200 range.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Canon 1D Mark IV with low actuations?
« on: September 22, 2013, 10:40:39 AM »
I have been on the lookout for a great deal on a used Canon 1D Mark IV with low actuations.  My idea of low is less than 100K out of the 300k estimated life.  I am seeing ads and auctions for bodies with less than 10K and some below 2500!!!!  Is it believeable that someone would spend upwards of $6000 and shoot only 2000 images?  I can squeeze that many off in one game.   I suppose they may have been videographers but would video use entail the same wear and tear as tens of thousands of shutter actuations?

Now that the 1Dx is on the refurb list for mid $5000, I may abandon my search for a $3000 1D4 and get a 1 year warranty.

Lenses / Canon 16-35 II f/2.8L AND/OR Canon 14mm II f/2.8
« on: September 20, 2013, 08:57:45 AM »
I had both of these lenses on my glass upgrade list and now that I got a deal on a Canon refurb 16-35, is there any greatly added utility to having a 14 along with my newly acquired 16-35?  Would I use both?

That said, I am now selling my 17-40mm f/4L
