Canon General / Re: Dream Package for Soccer???
« on: September 30, 2012, 01:21:05 PM »
That sounds like a cool day!  8)

Are you asking how you should position the equipment?

Are you going to have 2 cameras on the monopod?  Personally, I think 2 cameras on a monopod would throw the balance off too much for me, but I must admit I have never shot like that before.  Are you bringing 4 cameras?  This sounds a bit excessive to me.  I would leave the t4i at home.  I would also leave the EF-S 17-55 at home since it will only mount on the 7D, the only reason to swap that out with the 24-70mm would be for weight reduction. I would also leave the pancake home due to it's lack of versatility.

I would put the 5D3, 300mm f/2.8L IS with 1.4X on the monopod by itself.  Then I would put the 70-200mm on the 7D and have that at my right hip on a strap (I use black rapid sport) or whatever you like.  I would use the 5D3 and 7D for action/field shots.  The 7D has been favorably compared to the 1D3, that's why I was suggesting the 7D over the 1D2 for your action shots, but bare in mind that I have never shot with the 1D2, but I do own a 7D, MKIV and 1DX, as I like to shoot primarily sports and action shots.  Also, when quickly switching from the 5D3 to the 7D for your action, I think it will be easier, because those cameras are more similar to each other, than the 1D2.

I would put the 24-70mm on the 1D2(1.3X) to get wider shots, than if it were on the 7D(1.6X).

The equipment list is more than enough.  You may just want to bring the Tokina 12-24mm and carry it on your belt and leave the rebel at home. You will then need to have a place on your belt or strap to attach to the tripod ring of the 70-200mm when mounting the Tokina on the 7D, since I don't believe that it will fit on the 1D2 or 5D3.  This is a problem with mixing 5D3(FF), 1D2(1.3) and 7D(1.6) crop cameras with EF-S type crop/digital lenses. But it will all be good because you're planning it out in advance. ;)

These are just suggestions for you to consider,
Rich

I wish that the AF points in the VF would not go to sleep after only 7-8 seconds.  I'm still finding it very annoying that I have to first press AF-on or a half-shutter press, prior to moving the points with the multi-controller, in order to compose quick action shots.  >:(

Hey Trevor,

Thanks for posting the results.  I love the shots, they look great!!

Is it possible for a lens to focus fine (high keeper rate) on close objects and have a difficult time focusing on distant objects?

Other things to consider would be, the setting of the focus distance limiter switch on the lens, is focus search on or off in the camera, does it focus properly at long distances with manual focus?

Hey everyone. I just wanted to give you guys the head's up that I think this auction on eBay for a 500mm F4 is II is a scam. I double checked the guys pictures, and I have found each one of them existing somewhere else on the internet. This wouldn't be a big deal, but I private messaged him and specifically asked if the pictures were of HIS EXACT lens. He responded with a yes. Also the three pictures are pretty hard to find, but they are out there. Here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Canon-EF-500mm-f-4L-II-USM-Lens-/130769461345?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D2263706411550888132%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D130769461345%26

Thanks for the heads-up!  Not only that, but the 1st photo is the 500mm version II carrying case, and the 2nd photo is the version I carrying case.  Also the cardboard shipping box is from version I.  And he has negative feedback for selling a $6 book, now he's trying to sell a fake $10,000 lens. ::)  I don't deal with ebay much, but can something like this be reported?

To remove the custom shooting choice C1p from the mode button, you will have to go to the orange menu, Restrict shooting modes CFn2: Exposure and uncheck whatever modes that you don't want to show up in the shooting mode menu.

No, you don't want to do that, since that will clear your custom menu settings for the camera.

To clear the "custom shooting function only," you can go to the yellow menu Set Up 4 and select custom shooting mode (C1-C3) and then select clear settings and you will have the choice of which custom shooting mode to clear; C1, C2, or C3.

It's noticeably sharper than "old 500". I do have issues with the design of the tripod foot. The balance is wrong for me when using it on my video head. Curious if anyone else has seen this. I haven't read anything about it in any of the reviews.

I also noticed that the center of gravity isn't exactly over the base of the tripod foot.  It's more over the "heel" of the foot. I know Canon removed the front glass protective element on the 500mm to reduce weight. Perhaps that combined with the heavier 1DX tilts the balance towards the camera. The balance is further displaced rearwards with the teleconverter attached.

The only place that I've heard this mentioned was on the Really Right Stuff website and regarding their new replacement foot II version.

I was still able to balance the 500II and 1DX on the Wimberley gimbal head, but I was also using a long 6 inch Wimberley plate, which seemed to give me flexibility in adjusting the center of gravity, by sliding the lens forward.

Here's a few picks of the set-up.  Sorry about the poor quality, as it was extremely overcast.

Please note that the center of gravity was perfectly balanced as it was positioned in the photos, however I tilted the lens upward and locked the Wimberley head, just for the photos, as these were taken a few weeks ago.

Note that the lens plate is pushed fairly far forward to achieve balance and that the gimbal head knob in the last 2 photos is centered over the "heel of the lens foot and not the base of the lens foot."

Hi ,all just wondered if anyone out their in rumours land knows when the new 500 or 600 will be dropping into the shop. I'm a cps gold member and have asked a guy at Canon, the answer is don't know when. Got sick of waiting for the 200-400 so went mad, got drunk to drown my sorrows and hit the deposit button at the local canon dealer for a new 500,oops! Ho hum the wife understands, just wondered if anyone knows? From what I was told its the Olympics that's delaying them hitting the streets for mere mortals like me.

Mick

That's awesome congrats!!

EOS Bodies / Re: 1Dx AI-Servo frame rate question

I see your point, but since manual focus isn't that great for tracking fast subjects in AI servo, you might as well make the setting change to equal like you mentioned.

Or, if you want, you could still choose focus priority for 1st image,  and equal priority for 2nd image and it's still very fast, since it's the 2nd image that seems to be setting the fps and the 1st image sets a very slight initial delay, but since the 1DX is so fast at focusing I find the 1st image delay to be barely detectable.

The only reason I'm using equal for both is because I don't won't any delay for my action shots.

Cheers!

P is program mode and then you have three Custom modes (C1, C2 and C3).

If you were in P mode when you registered and saved those settings to C1, then C1 will change to C1P, to show you that the program mode was used to register that custom function.

The C2 and C3 modes have to be added to your mode choices by selecting them in the C.Fn2:Exposure Menu

In the orange menu C.Fn2: Exposure (Restrict shooting modes) you can check the boxes of the modes that you would like to add to your mode choices.

If you check C2 and C3 and press OK, then once added you can choose C2 or C3 and then register C2 in the yellow set-up4 menu.  If you register C2 while in AV mode then it will become C2AV in the mode screen.

EOS Bodies / Re: 46.1mp Canon DSLR Previewed at PhotoPlus 2012? [CR1]
« on: September 22, 2012, 05:45:54 PM »
well i take pictures with a dslr for 7 years now.
95% of my pictures are taken with ISO under 6400.

i really don“t know what people need ISO 25600 and above.

and i wonder how these people have worked before.....

Good question!  Sometimes ISO 25,600 is necessary for shooting sports at night in order to achieve high shutter-speeds.  I was frequently using the 1D MKIV at ISO 12,800  f/2.8 and 1/1000sec for night games in order to freeze the athlete, and those settings were for decent lighting.

If the stadium lighting was poor, then I could slow down my SS to 1/800sec or 1/500sec and risk getting subject motion blur, or now on the 1DX, I could increase my ISO to 25,600 and apply some further noise reduction in post.

Another benefit would be, if you need to add a 1.4X teleconverter which drops the maximum aperture to f/4, then the higher ISO will also come in handy due to the loss of an f-stop.

Yes, I've seen this problem before, I think someone needs to upgrade their firmware!

EOS Bodies / Re: 1Dx AI-Servo frame rate question
« on: September 22, 2012, 11:14:42 AM »
I have the same problem, on a 5DmkIII though.  I have back button focus instead of the shutter button.  When I'm not focusing in AI Servo it shoots around 3fps.  If I am focusing it shoots at the normal 6fps.  The 1st and 2nd image priority is set to focus.  If I change it to anything other then focus it might pause at the start but does shoot at the full 6fps when focusing and when not.
Its odd because it is slow when not focusing, but normal when it is and only in Ai-servo.

After further review and confirmation in the manual. I have deemed that this is a feature and not a problem with the 1DX or 5DIII.

When you select 1st image "focus" priority and 2nd image "focus" priority the frame rate does slow down dramatically to ensure focus.

After further testing, "it appears to me that the 2nd image focus priority choice," has a greater impact on the shooting speed then the 1st image selection choice does.

"If I select 1st image focus priority, and 2nd image focus priority, the fps rate slows down."

"If I select 1st image release priority, and 2nd image focus priority, the fps rate slows down."

If I select 1st image focus priority, and 2nd image release priority then the the shooting speed is "fast."

* "So, it appears that the 2nd image focus priority choice slows the frame rate down more than the 1st image focus priority choice."

I have the default equal priority set for 1st and 2nd image and that seems to be working very well for me.

There is also another setting on the next menu: AF3:One Shot AF release priority, and I have that one set to "focus priority" which is also the default.

This One shot setting, coupled with the 2nd image focus priority choice, may further explain why some were getting different fps rates depending on which AF mode (One Shot vs. AI Servo) they were in.
