Lenses / Re: How about a new 28-135mm?

I got the 28-135 as the kit lens with my 50D and thought of it as a "normal to 200" that went nicely with the 100-400 I bought at the same time. But I lacked a wide angle and had to use my Minolta bridge camera for a while when I had to go wide. Added a 10-22 in six months.

Got a 5D3 a year ago with the 24-105 kit lens. Would rather crop the 105 f/4 down to a 135 f/4 than shoot the 135 f/5.6. And there is no way to "uncrop" the 28 to a 24. Since I now own the 24-105 there is no way I would buy a new 28-135 f/4 L or even a 24-135 f/4 L. don't know how heavy an f/2.8 version of either of them would be but probable more than I would want to carry for what I shoot.

I definitely see a time in the future that your phone will be capable of similar images as your mid to high end dslr.

But why wouldn't the improvments that made the future phone camera equal to a mid/high end DSLR be applied to the mid and high end DSLRs making them even better too?

Since you said a 24mm prime was one choice, I would go for the 24mm TS-E rather than the f/1.4 for landscapes.
I love my 24 TS-E for landscapes. The 17-40 is useful when I need to go wider for landscapes, almost always stopped down to f/8-f/11. I would have to rent a 17mm TS-E before I ever bought it. The filter problem would make me think long and hard about buying it.

I would get the 24-105 as a kit lens when you get your FF body. As others have said, you can't beat the discount price when the 24-105 comes in the kit. That's what I did.

I like my 17-40 as an UWA when I am shooting FF landscapes. Stopped down to f/8-11 it is as good as the 16-35.

it's like a wind up toy that you wind up and let go and they bounce around all over the place make lots of noise then calm down eventually... until you wind them up again!

No, everyone knows that the 5D3 has superior IQ to the 7D so if you want a new APS-H camera call it the 5D Mark IV. A smaller, lighter body than a 1 series and the "5D Mark IV" would recall the 1D Mark IV and may help boost sales.

You will enjoy it. I added a 5D3 and some lenses to my kit last year. I still smile when I PP images from it.

But I kept my 7Ds for birds. Some experts will knock the extra reach of a crop but my 500 f/4L cost a lot less than an 800 f/5.6L for FF would and is a stop faster. Can add a 1.4x to the 500 but still can't add one to an 800 and shoot with the 5D3.

Keep it ... it will serve as a back up lens ... also, as you said that by selling it "you won't make much on it anyway" ... besides if/when you want to do some video in low light (at that focal length) it will come in really handy. Over a period of 6 years I had three Canon 50 f/1.8 lenses, the only reason I don't have any of them now is coz I gave them away as a "free gift bundle" to "enhance" the sale of my Canon 400D, 500D & 7D. So keep it, if for nothing else one day it will come in handy when you want to sell some of your other gear.

Might also be a good lens to take to the beach.

I still have my 50D & 28-135 kit lens. Couldn't get that much for it (not enough for a small L lens) and thought if I took a trip it would be a good backup body just in case.

I exchanged my 135 for a 100 2.0 and 200 2.8 - more useful for indoor volleyball.  The 135 2.0 was sort of an "inbetween" focal length for my needs.  I wonder if that'll change by going to FF.  If so then it'll be clear that I'm a dick.

Yes, the 200 2.8 will be like your 135 on a crop

I thought about buying the Sony RX100, but ended up buying the Canon s100 when it was on sale for $229 on Amazon. I plan to take it on a trip in which I'll already be taking 2 DSLR bodies and an assortment of lenses. If it were to be my only camera, I'd pay the $648. But as a point and shoot, and for my uses, I decided to put the $400+ difference toward other uses. That said, if the price spread had been say $100, there is no question that I would have bought the Sony.

Bought the S100 on Black Friday for $229 from Amazon too. Got it in silver, figured it looked "less pro" than black and wouldn't cook as much in the Florida sun. Happy with my choice.

I'd go with the 7D and consider refurbed or used. Then when the 7D2 comes out wait a while for the price to drop. Look how much the 5D3 has dropped in a year!

I liked my first 7D so much that when I found the Canon Loyalty Program I bought a second (refurbed) one. I think the older one, bought new, is the one that is gripped and on my 500 on a tripod. The other one usually has the 100-400 mounted for BIF and no grip to keep the weight down. Other than the serial number I can't tell them apart.

I'm going to wait a while to replace them with the 7D2 if it turns out to be much better then the 7D.

Question:  If the High Yen = High Canon Prices argument was as valid as was asserted so many times, will we now expect to see this effect working in reverse?  Or will prices stay the same, and the True Believers simply latch onto some other factor to explain it?

I remember decades ago when the Mark rose vs. the Dollar the price of a Benz rose because of it. When the Mark dropped vs. the Dollar the prices held.

Primes? Of course. Primes even work here in the US.

If one of the dogs gets up early I can see 5:00 on the alarm clock. Before I retired 5:00 PM was one of the best times of the day, now it's time to pull a bottle out of the wine refrig. and chill a white one or let a red warm a bit to serving temperature.

If I'm going out to shoot birds with my 500 I set the alarm for 5:00 AM. I dream about a 600 II.

A local pro I shoot birds with at times with had a Canon 100-400. Borrowed a Sigma 50-500 from another pro, used it for a few months, really liked it and bought one for himself. Returned the borrowed one and sold his 100-400. I did a quick look through his blog and couldn't fine a mention of it but he obviously liked it better than the 100-400. Sorry.

I still like my 100-400 but then I'm not a pro.

If you pick up a FF camera, I agree with J.R. suggestion to upgrade your lenses in the wide to short tele range.  I suggest selling your 28-135mm and picking up a 24-105L.  The 24-105L is an excellent general purpose lens on a full frame camera and very reasonably priced.

If you go FF get the 24-105 f/4L IS with it at the same time as the "kit" lens. It comes at a considerable discount.
