Hey guys and gals,

I am one of those who doesn't really like the attention that my 70-200 2.8L IS II can bring. I got creative with some gaffer's tape and fixed my "problem"!

I know I may receive some flak from those who would see this as the equivalent of a putting bumper sticker on a Ferrari, but for me, I suits my needs quite well and I'm quite happy with how it turned out! 

How'd you cut it so accurately? I am having trouble cutting neat strips of exact widths

I measured it very precisely and cut with an X-acto knife and a straight-edge. (I taped the tape to a cutting board and then reapplied it to the lens.

LensCoat (can be removed in seconds and is residue free)..... just sayin'   

I looked at LensCoat but I think mine looks better

You forgot to stencil "AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II" on your black lens.   

If anybody asks  say its a prototype and I've signed an NDA

Good for you if that you get your desired effect.

I'm sure the off white paint keep the temperature down - I've been shooting on some hots days lately and I'm glad the white paint is there.

I will be sure to be aware of the heat--if it were getting too hot would I be able to tell by touch, do you think?

I actually don't remember where I got it but (edit: I got it on Amazon: JVCC Premium Grade Gaffer's Tape). I did some research and I've heard both ways. I did a test where I put a small piece on the bottom for a few weeks and it came off quite easily with no residue. I'm sure if it does leave residue I can carefully get it off with goo gone or something...

I do a few weddings here and there but mostly portraits, and travel photography.

AF and the high ISO performance would be the main reasons. Actually another reason is although I absolutely love my 70-200 2.8, I kin of get sick of the size of it. I think I'd really enjoy the size of the f/4 IS and I thought the high ISO of the mark 3 could compensate for the loss if 2.8... Is my logic flawed or am I not thinking about something? P.s. either way, I'll probably end up getting either the canon 85 f/1.8 or the 135 f/2 once I nail down the focal length I'm happier with--if that adds anything to the decision

I have a 5D Mark 2 and a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II.

Should I sell it (add in a bit of cash) and get a 5D Mark 3 and a 70-200 f/4L IS?

I hope no one minds if I hijack this thread a bit (add to it?)... I too am thinking over some of these combos. I currently have a 5D2, 24-105 and the 70-200L 2.8 IS II. I love the 70-200 and I consistently get shots with it that I'm mostly happy with but I do hate how big and conspicuous it is. I'm doing quite a bit of traveling this year and hate to lose telephoto but also am wary of lugging around a big white lens (I'm going to Africa, China, and potentially SE Asia). I was thinking of switching up my kit a little bit.

I was thinking of selling the 70-200, 5D2, and 24-105 and getting a 5D3, 85 1.8, and 135. BTW, I also have a 35 1.4 and a 50 1.8.

I do a fair amount of portrait work and some weddings. I think I'd like to use primes but I guess I'm afraid I'd miss the convenience of the zooms and IS. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

I asked him about some of the more serious high-tech they must use (he works for Homeland Security) and they do have all that stuff. He just needed something small and simple to keep with him for when he was out doing whatever it is he does. He said he mostly needs it for taking pictures of license plates and stuff like that.

I thought I'd follow up with more info and what my friend decided to do, in case you are interested.

This guy was closest to the reality of the situation:

You guys are funny.  You think Law Enforcement is like in the movies.  Unlimited budgets and computers that show you the fingerprints with cool noises as they check them.

If your friend is sitting in a parking lot, that means he needs something reasonable for the inside of a car ( a 5 year old american sedan with lousy shocks and brakes).  A crop DSLR and an 18-200 is probably where he wants to start. It is not unusual to shoot surveillance photos from 6 feet away, and the 18-200 gives tremendous range while easily handheld, and relatively inconspicuous.  A large aperture lens like a 70-200 f2.8 will add to the night shooting ability.

After talking more to him about his needs, he ended up getting a T4i kit w/ 18-135 & 55-250. All the fancy CSI/NASA equipment would be "cooler" but it's a little overkill for him. Thanks for the help!

Note that it comes in  a discrete green colour.  Not the crowd attracting white of Canon L lenses.

  Yep!  That looks like a very discrete lens.

Thanks for the suggestions! I had originally recommended looking into a 7D and the 100-400. I'll ask him about what kind of distance he is talking about here. From what I understand his job requires a lot of sitting in a parking lot...

Good call on the lens wraps as well.

What does this mean: "Oh, and doesn't Canon have some kind of strong signing of an image that it comes from a person/camera? Maybe he should look into that, since it probably would help with chain of custody kind of thing for any evidence." Strong signing?
