Lenses / Long lens recommendation for surveillance.
« on: December 17, 2012, 10:48:12 AM »
Hi, I've got a friend in law enforcement who is asking me for a recommendation for lens/camera combo for surveillance. I naturally thought to extend the question to you all!

What would you recommend as a set-up for surveillance? My friend won't be able to spend a ton of time learning the ins and outs of it and he's not interested in photography as an art. He will need to use it time to time at night and won't be using a flash (obviously).

Your thoughts?

P.S. Budget doesn't necessarily matter. Unless you are concerned about the fact that our taxes will be footing the bill... :)

Thanks for the thoughts guys! I shot a wedding tonight and really tried to decide what focal length I like more. The 35 sure comes in handy for storytelling shots as one of you said, especially the as it got darker. I like the idea of upgrading to the 50 f/1.4; the only thing is I really love the build quality of L lenses.

So much to think about...

Lenses / Help me decide; keep my 35L or get a 50L?

Hey everyone! I'm on a tight budget and I currently have a 5d2, 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, 24-105L, 50 f/1.8 and a 35 f/1.4L. I'm happy with my 35mm generally speaking but lately I've been looking more into a 50mm f/1.2. I have the opportunity to buy obe from a friend and I just can't afford to buy the fifty L and the 35 L. My question is of you could choose one: 35L or 50L, which would you choose? Oh, I do most portraits , wedding, and lifestyle/fashion photography. Thanks! Looking forward to hearing peoples' thoughts!

Also I meant to add...

I previously owned the 70-200 f/2.8L IS mark I. I wasn't very happy with it; it seemed to lack in sharpness. The mark 2 is a world of difference!

I bought my copy used so I got a good deal on it. Luckily it was tack sharp all the way through the range so no need/opportunity to return. I absolutely love this lens. I am constantly wowed by the images I am able to make with it. I use it on a 5d mark II. I don't like that it's so big and I personally don't like that Canon's telephotos are white (I don't like the attention it gets) but I get over that pretty quickly after viewing the pictures!

I really like how sharp the pictures are wide open at f/2.8 and how fast it focusses.

Good luck with your purchase! If I were you I'd go for it and don't look back!
