I am a professional photographer who loves small P&S cameras, my favorite being the Contax T3.

I have used multiple Canon S70, G9, G10 and S95 to shoot catalogs, magazine covers  and a huge portion of my personal projects.

While I was able to make good images using these small cameras and I in fact earned thousands and thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars using these P&S cameras, at this point in time I wish I had been able to use a compact camera with a bigger sensor. The P&S images simply lack dynamic range, high ISO capability and there is essentially no control over DOF.

Even the MFT sensor in my Panasonic GF1leaves me wanting for more.

In terms of ISO, I never shot the S70 or G9 above the base ISO as anything above that looked horrible. The S95 I allow to creep a little higher. Even the GF1 above 800 is terrible. I say this despite the fact that I love these cameras.

While I do have an iPhone 5 I do not consider it to be a serious camera under any circumstances other than an emergency. That said I use it's camera daily, specially for images I plan on emailing or using on Instagram.

At this point in time I believe the Nikon A is the best camera for my needs (large sensor, flash, wide angle lens... as I don't care about zooms, flip screens or viewfinders).

If Canon releases a simple, straightforward APS version of something like an S110 without purposely crippling it in fear of it's dSLR sales it would hopefully be a very tempting camera.

Or just buy a Nikon A and don't worry about what half baked reiteration Canon comes out with...

As a CPS member, I'm fine with my 1Dx, 1Ds3 etc... I've given up on Canon otherwise.

Honestly, would rather have a built in flash than a viewfinder. Viewfinder would be OK, as long as it is way more integrated than that horrible bump on the mockup.

Would have bought the M if it had a flash. Could care less about a viewfinder.

Obviously there are cases and assignments where 50mp would be beneficial...

the point is that they are rather specialized or few and far between.

For the shooters that need 50mp or think they need 50mp... go for it.

Awesome... on a typical 4 day job I shoot 10,000 photos. So at 50mp each... it's a cluster f¥¢k.

I'll stick with 1Ds3 and 1Dx.

Regarding the size of the Contax T3... When I've argued with people about this before, some have stated that whereas light can strike film from almost any angle and still properly expose it, a digital sensor requires the light to hit it rather perpendicularly.

Therefore, the tiny lens on the T3 is supposedly impossible at least with current technology. Which I guess explains the huge lens on the Sony RX1.

However, in only a few years time we have gone from almost no large sensor compact cameras to a veritable plethora of models to chose from.

My guess is that the technology exists or will soon exist to make very small FF and APS compact cameras with retractible or very small lenses. What remains to be seen is at what pace the camera companies will release these cameras to us.

Well, it is promising that Canon at least half heartedly made a mirrorless camera.

I think the APS sensor size is Ok. The lens on the Sony RX1 is too big. At least with MFT and somewhat with APS the lens can be somewhat small. But I guess a FF mirrorless with something like the 40mm pancake would be truly compact.

If the M had a built in flash I might have had to buy it. At least this way I don't have to even consider it. Can stick with the GF1.

In my mind, a digital version of the Contax T3 is the holy grail. Features, size and even comprable price.

It seems to me (and in line with Canon's typical behavior) the EOS-M is intended to be a mediocre offering that simultaneously (and halfheartedly) gets them into this market segment and gives Canon some idea of how well it sells without hurting dSLR sales.

Keep in mind these classic moves by Canon- killing the Pro1, removing RAW from the S80, killing the G line after the G6, reintroducing the G line minus RAW with the G7, removing HD video from the G10 etc. This is a very conservative and very cautious company. Obviously, very reluctant to infringe upon their dSLR sales in any way.

My guess is that there were some serious internal battles about launching the EOS-M. Obviously, some design concessions were made to assuage the dSLR department and their accountants.

I for one am looking forward to buying a Canon mirrorless camera once they make a serious attempt at it.

Designing it without a built in flash limits it's usefulness and versatility.

Including a built in flash would have made it only slightly larger, an add on flash defeats any size advantage it has.

In any case, this forces me to consider the unfortunately larger (but has a built in flash) Fuji X-E1.

Once you attach an accessory flash it is no longer compact, totally defeats the purpose.

Will be sticking with the GF1.

Is the built in flash useful in your GF1?

The built in flash was used constantly on my Contax T3, my Canon S70, G9, S95 and used nearly every night on my GF1. Really can't live with out it.

I'm fine with my "flashless" 1Ds3 and 5D2... but neither are intended to be pocketable. Popping on the 580EX2 just makes an already massive camera a little bigger, I'm fine with that.

One of the reason 5D2 and 7D are used, specifically on action sequences is their size and when they are inevitably destroyed it is no great loss.

In the grand scheme of The Avengers, several demolished 5D2 is a drop in the bucket.
