PowerShot Cameras / Re: Canon Powershot S105 (S100 replacement)
« on: August 24, 2012, 04:06:08 PM »
I was interested in the P7700 until I heard they added a lens cap.  For my purposes, I have no interest in a view finder or hot shoe; compact size with high IQ is most important for me.

As for the grip on the RX100, just get the aftermarket grip like they have on the Canon S90 and S95 and your set.

The G12 successor interest me alot less than what they might do with the S100, but I am still concerned Canon is not focusing on their performance issues as we have seen in the G1X, S100, and G12.  Put that next to the RX100 and it is downright fast.

Very true; we all know a G12 and S100 successor are coming; the question is WHEN? LOL

Saw another raving review on cnet today for the RX100 so my pocket is ready, but I do want to see what Canon does with the G12 and S100 successor.  I don't see the price of the RX100 dropping anytime soon, but will to give it another month and if nothing from Canon transpires, the Sony it is.  Either way, I am still thinking the RX100 might outperform both of them especially when it comes to focusing and overall performance.

With only weeks to go before Photokina I wonder wether Canon will give anything further away?
In the last few months we have had the two latest Powershots which did not include a G12 successor, the G1X and the EOS M.
Surely they have to keep something up their sleeve for the show. Especially after the Sony RX 100 and now the Nikon P7700 being announced and stealing thunder (looks interesting). As to the latter it looks almost like a G12 rip off apart from the better lens and BL CMOS, sensor even to the size, weight and the articulated screen! I wonder how Canon can top that?

I must admit I was sorely tempted by the RX100 until the Nikon P7700 was announced. It looks so much like what I might have expected a G12 to be that with the lower price than the RX 100, the longer brighter zoom and the articulated screen that for me, if no G12 successor is announced by Photokina, my money will go on the Nikon. I am almost tempted to pre-order one now but I am going to be patient and wait till Photokina. I almost forgot to add, the RX has no hot shoe or grip!

Any update on whether this will actually be the S105 and if so, when it might be announced?

Actually the P7700 will be $149 cheaper than the RX100.

If Canon doesn't hurry up with the G12 successor I can see folks going for the new Nikon P7700 despite nothing being known yet about IQ or the lens but it goes have a new CMO sensor if that means anything and it DOES have the articulated screen like the G11 and G12. It might not be a G1X or a Pro1X but it looks like it mights be in the 600$ to 700$ range so it might be an even better bet than a RX100

PowerShot Cameras / Re: A Powershot update by September?

If Canon goes with a 24mm lens, look more for about a 24-120 mm lens.

Some further thoughts on the new Nikon P7700 which although having same size sensor as the old G12 has the new CMOS configuration, it has an articulated screen like the G12 and it is also has a better brighter zoom ƒ2 to ƒ4 28mm -200mm equiv.

http://www.dpreview.com/products/nikon/compacts/nikon_cpp7700

It's almost as though this was the Canon's own update to the G12! So I wonder what Canon have up their sleeve for Photokina (if anything) seeing that Nikon have seemingly stolen their thunder? What could Canon possibly do that could be a competitor to the P 7700? Of course they would have to have a CMOS sensor or better and a digic 5 processor against the present one. What about the zoom? 7.1X on the Nikon with an ƒ2 max could the Canon at least have a 24mm to say 180mm zoom to cover the wide angle end?

If and when Canon eventually surprises us with a G13 or 14, it would be interesting to see the two cameras go head to head on IQ and speed of use. I have a feeling it's going to be a tough challenge.

Apparently the Nikon is scheduled for release on the 27th of September so Canon could still bring out something at Photokina but I am left wondering what it could possibly be given the options that the P7700 provide. It's even quite a bit lighter than the old G12.

Anyone else out there got any thoughts on what Canon might do to really compete with the P7700? I like it a lot and apart from the sensor size I'd certainly prefer this over the Sony RX100.

Even if Canon brings out the G12 successor, the P7700 now has the edge and Canon will need to at least match or beat what Nikon has done.

The RX100 is very enticing, but the P7700 is even more interesting at this point if you can deal with the size difference.

With Sony's Clear Image Zoom of 7.2x, the lens and zoom comparision kind of becomes mute.

Then you compare the sizes and keep in mind the RX100 still has a sensor about 3 times the size of the P7700:

This has got me thinking. If this P7700 is due by late September it might be a kick in the pants for Canon to release any G12 successor they might have up their sleeves just in case Nikon steals their thunder!

As far as I am concerned this is a definite G12 beater, lighter body, brighter lens, better sensor, zoom could have begun at 24mm and been shorter at the long end. I think it's going to be a tough cookie to beat if Canon doesn't bring out a G13/14 by Photokina
and make it available before the 27th of September when the Nikon 7700 goes on sale!

Agree.  I can see Canon doing the exact same with the G12 successor, faster lens, a little more zoom and a CMOS sensor.

Actually it looks very much like a G12 successor even to the vari angle screen.

So the Nikon P7200 successor has been announced.  Still the same size sensor, but the removal of the viewfinder and changed from a CCD to CMOS sensor plus the change to a zoom 28mm-200mm F2-4 in 35mm.

Is this likely the same we will see with the G12 successor?

No.  The G1X is a completely different line; it is NOT the G12 successor.

Where's the successor to the G12?

Did you miss the G1 X announcement?  :P

Are you referring to the one today for the Canon Officially Announces the PowerShot SX160 IS & SX500 IS?

Is Canon announcing something Aug 22?

The RX 100 is more expensive but it does have a larger more advanced sensor and therefore would produce a higher IQ. If I were you I'd wait untill the 22nd to see what Canon has up their sleeves next, or at least until Photokina on the 18th of September to see if there's an update on the S100. In the meantime you can save up some cash in case they announce something really tasty like a G13. If they don't I'll be going for the RX100 it gets such good reviews.

Apparently rumour has it that there will be an Powershot announcement on the 22nd of August we have no idea what it will be.

G1X is pocketable?

I don't see this as a G1X replacement, but rather a higher model in the line. The G1X is the ultimate "pocketable" camera, while the Pro X is the ultimate all-in-one travel cam.

On the RX100, think you are referring to Clear Zoom which automatically gives it 7.1x and something like 10x if you drop it to 10mp.  This is non digital.

As for the Nikon, seems like it will hopefully be a whole new camera with a 1" sensor instead of the current 1/1.7" which is in the G12, P7100, and S100.

I'll be very interested to see what Nikon do with the 7200 as the sensor on the 7100 did not get rave reviews. If it's not better that the G12 and there's no G12 replacement in the shops by mid September I can see myself being tempted by the RX100 as if you drop the pixels from 20mp to 10mp apparently it increases the zoom range from 3.6 to 5.1x . I only just discovered that little tip. Better a camera with at least 5x zoom and 10mp than 20mp and only 3.6 zoom.

So thanks for the news, I'll be watching with baited breath.

Its either the P7200 or another new line in the Coolpix lineup.  Suppose to be announced on the 22nd; a larger sensor compact.

Could definitely see a faster lens (something like the X10 would be ideal) and a newer sensor.

I don't see Canon dropping the lens to ƒ1.9 in the G12 successor, but more like the S100 successor.

Are you following the Nikon announcement?

You are probably correct in saying that the next Gxx wont have a bigger sensor in order not to cannibalise sales of the G1X but they might replace the current sensor with a cmos or more advanced type of sensor. The other thing they might do is introduce a better lens, we still have not seen the hinted at camera with an ƒ1.9 lens they could also introduce a 24mm to 150mm, 6x or greater zoom?

My final comment for the moment is that they could reduce the number of physical controls and make the screen a touch screen as on the new EOS-M making the design sleeker and perhaps even lighter?
What Nikon announcement? A successor to the G12 and the RX100?
