1. You should only need to calibrate your monitor.
2. The lab should be able to give you a profile for the developer that will take care of matching your calibrated monitor to the calibrated developing process.
3.  The type of paper being used also has an effect so you need a profile that matches the developing process and the paper.

I've used a Colormunki to calibrate my monitors and profile my inkjet printer, when I've sent stuff to the local photo shop I just use their profile for the type of paper I want.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon EOS-1D X DXOMark Sensor Scores

...hey...I just had a thought...does Ken Rockwell do the testing at DXO??????  :P

No, Ken thinks the 5D3 is great, despite its low DxO score.

I guess the big question  is why they didn't use the same sensor for the 5D mark III

Re read my analysis above. In short the 1DX sensor is the same as the 5D3 sensor, except with bigger pixels.

Bigger pixels make it a different sensor.  It may be the same technology but with pixels size matters.

Nikon Sony still has a lead but in dynamic range but the gap is closing.

Fixed. :)

I'm not at my best in the morning. :-[

Looks like we will continue to see Canon improve their sensors.
Nikon still has a lead but in dynamic range but the gap is closing.
The world may not be coming to an end after all. ::)

I guess the big question  is why they didn't use the same sensor for the 5D mark III

Lenses / Re: missing 200-400 and 100-400 announcements?
« on: October 10, 2012, 05:36:00 PM »
The 10K price doesn't make much sense.

The Nikon 200-400 is $1000 less than the Nikon 500mm.

I can't see the Canon unit being more expensive than the Canon 500mm.
If it really is 10 K then  the Nikon 200-400 plus a converter plus a camera  would be less than the Canon lens.

I like the Idea of the 200-400 1.4x, but if it is more expensive and heavier  than a 500mm  then i don't think it will sell well.

....I know, that most of you simply do not care about facts, but for the rest, who are more open minded, I explain (once more).

DxO Analyser is not made for the photographers. It is for the engineers and technicians. ...

And what do they do with it?

Confuse photographers and themselves.   ;D

I am right handed, but I hang the camera on the left side of my body when using a copy of the BR strap.
Grabbing by the left hand supports the camera and allows you to make changes with the right.

Software & Accessories / Re: Head for Manfrotto 055xprob
« on: October 06, 2012, 09:33:44 AM »
Get a good ball head with an arca-swiss style quick release.

On my 055  tripod I  use a Manfrotto 498 RC2  which i modified to take a Jobu Design arca style clamp.
With the arca swiss system you can put plates on all your camera's and large lenses that have tripod collars,
the plates are flat and you can leave them on the camera/lens all the time.  The Manfrotto plates  are uncomfortable if you leave them on when the camera is not on the tripod.

Many heads use the arca swiss style so you don't need to change your plates if you want to upgrade your sytem later.  I modified my manfrotto after I started using a Gimbal head that had arca swiss clamp and plate.
I also put an arca clamp on the top of my monopod.

I use a chinese knock off of the Black Rapid Strap called the Quickstap.
I have an Arce Swiss clamp on the strap and plates on my cameras and lenses.
When carrying a lens like the 400mm f5.6 I clamp the strap to the tripod foot on the lens so that it balances better at my side.

I also found that the Black Rapid Brad was a good addition to the chinese knock off, it restricts the  movement of the stap on your shoulder.   Basically it turns it into the sports version of the BlacK Rapid.

I've been using the starp for about 2 years.

But all carpenters use quality, sturdy tools - though they certainly don't always buy the newest laser-guided solar-powered gear.

Personally I use an old claw-hammer that I inherited from my grand-father.    Never seen any need to upgrade, it drives a nice straigth nail. ;D

Lenses / Re: Canon Teleconverters Question
« on: October 03, 2012, 05:16:50 PM »
which kenko 1.4x are you getting? I was thinking of ordering the Pro 300 1.4X DGX as I read somewhere it will focus at f/8 on the 5dm3

I think that only worked on a 1Dx, not on a 5D Mark III. Correct me if I'm wrong.

/ Stolpe

Art Morris reported that the Kenko worked at f8  with an 800mm f5.6L on a 1DX but not on a 5D3

Lenses / Re: DPReview and DxOMark to partner for lens testing
« on: October 02, 2012, 07:42:43 PM »

The one other site I would recommend is LensTip.com.  It's a Polish site.  The reviewer seems to know optics.  The reviews seem to be fair and rigorous.  The english is a little awkward sometimes, but it's a lot better than my Polish so I'm not complaining.

I visit his site from time to time and he does a pretty good job.
As  Roger at LensRentals pointed out the different sites use different methods and measurement so its hard to compare across the sites.  LensTip is  internally consistent, but  I find that his edge MTF's don't match up relative to Photozone and LensRentals

I'm actually going to say that if DPR  just uses the raw data from DxO and puts it into their graphical form then it may be a usefull colaboration.

Its the DxO  one number score that I can't figure out.

Flawed quantitative data analysis meets biased opinion.  A match made in...well, let's just say not heaven.

Shouldn't that be biased quantitative data analysis meets flawed opinion?   ;D
