EOS Bodies / Re: 2013 Predictions for Canon EOS Products
« on: February 20, 2013, 01:53:33 PM »
Anyone know what Canon camera is in this below linked picture?  Never seen one with the red piece by the hotshoe.

http://500px.com/photo/26318243

Update:Even more suspicious is the Canon logo has been removed, this has a pop-up flash and looks to be in new condition.  Can't place the lens either the more I look at this - size wise looks like the 85mm 1.2 but the bulge appears different by the camera mount from the current 85,1.2???

Supporting what others have said - 7D, if you look through this guys gallery he has loads of photos snapped with a 7D.

Dont know but that red piece somehow makes the body look bad@$$/Evil. Could that red panel indicate pro-line series/bodies like the rings are for their L series lenses? Or it could very well be modified by the user who knows :P

This Sunday, Canon is having a additional 20% off the price of refurbished lenses on their web site.  I've been very happy with any refurbs I've bought.
I'd try to login early, the sale starts at 12:01 AM ET.  The popular lenses will go fast.  You will save a whole lot of $$ on those lenses if you are quick.

Wow - where did you hear about this?

From the article:

Quote
With 5D Mk IIIs, CF pins are bending at an amazing rate. With the latter, I suspect the combination of a CF slot and and SD slot (rather than 2 CF slots) allows CF cards to wiggle a bit more during insertion, so the card slots might not line up with the pins properly. I don’t know that there will be an easy fix for this, but be gentle putting those CF cards in your 5D III.

I felt that sliding a card into the 5DIII CF slot wasn't as "smooth" as with the 5DII.  The card does seem to wiggle a bit when pushing it in, so I'll be more careful from now on.

I have already had to send mine in for repair - Damaged two SanDisk cards in trying to figure out what the hell was going on.  Nicely Sandisk has replaced those for me.   I have no idea how it happened but feel less of an idiot knowing it is happening to others.   I am on the GOLD plan with Canon and it still cost over $200 to repair :(

And Roger is such a great source of information.

if you guys ever bothered to read much of his stuff you'd learn that he usually recommends you not to buy the more expensive product. it's at the bottom of his reviews on things, under "recommendations". he'll usually tell you to either make do with what you have or go buy some much less expensive, usually older, model.

You know - in the old days I would have agreed with you - more recently I have noticed a SERIOUS upswing in his sales-manship and his "THIS IS A GREAT PRODUCT".    I am not going to deny that he provides loads of helpful information(mixed in with a few whacky opinions but we are all entitled to that) but I really put far less weight on what he says these days and when I want to read about Nikon I go to http://www.bythom.com/

Built-in GPS makes me highly suspicious - not when Canon has a $220 add-on they can sell, they aren't going to build that into a cheaper camera - same with WIFI really.  I think this is highly suspect.    And if we do hear about something at Photokina, and I am leaning toward not, I don't think it will be ready to ship anytime soon.

Willing to pay a premium on top of a premium?  Someone is selling it on Amazon for $2600 http://goo.gl/NhREj

Is it wrong that my first response to those numbers is excitement over the tamron?

That much better than the excellent mark I? With stabilisation? For me it's a no-brainer (unless Canon decide to release a mark III with IS any time soon)

I have been using the Tamron 24-70 for the past week, including one wedding - I am not happy with it.  Need serious AF micro adjustments, it is now better but still seems softer than it should be, yes I do know the Mark I was pretty soft. But this Tamron is getting beat(at some focal lengths) by it's own 28-75 that I have and still use.   Rather than an arm or a leg I think I am going to sell my Kidney :)  For the Canon.

Disclaimer- My data is ancedotal- Roger has three copies that he tested and all were better than mark I- he also mentioned the front element falling off. . . and did you see the tear down of the Mark 2 - his words "built to last"

Finally some scums are selling the old version at the new version's price on Amazon. Be careful, I almost pushed the buy button in my excitement of seeing IN STOCK!

Lenses / Re: Looking for 18-135mm STM first impressions
« on: August 03, 2012, 03:36:39 PM »
Initial impression is that this lens is an excellent walk around lens for  someone that doesn't mind variable aperture and really wants to avoid switching lenses. The compromises are far fewer than they were with the older version and looks to be better than most other lenses that cover this range

The beginnings of my detailed review Canon 18-135 STM lens is taking shape http://digital.photorecommendations.com/recs/2012/08/18-135-stm-detailed-review/

I am happy to answer any questions, What would you like to know about the lens?

Lenses / Re: 50mm 1.4 or 40mm 2.8?
« on: August 01, 2012, 08:34:56 AM »
I currently own both - tested both on a T4i and 5DM3.  I love the size and convenience of the 40, it is quite sharp even at f/2.8- focus is snappy and did I mention it is small!  When you compare images side by side with the 50 f/1.4 you start to see some noticeable differences in color rendition and sharpness, the 40 is not a bad lens and at 1/2 the price of the 50 f/1.4 it is a good value.  The 40 or 35 is a better focal range on a crop sensor but that 35 can focus so slow sometimes.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Canon Rebel T4i w/18-135 IS STM Availability

Has anyone ordered through digital Rev - http://www.digitalrev.com/promotion/canon-rebel-t4i/MjQ5NDA5Nzg_A They say in stock and shipping.  I can push the button and it would be here early next week?  When no else except a few Best Buys have them in stock?

Edit: Sorry I just saw the other thread on exactly this and am Wary of DigitalRev.  Sigh - Back to waiting.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 Pancake
« on: June 26, 2012, 09:24:23 PM »
The 50 1.4 looked to be the way to go, but this at a cheaper price and similar build might be better for me.  The tiny size means I'd be able to put a body with lens into my work bag or even the handle bar bag on my bicycle.

I have had the 40mm now for about 3 days, really fun little lens but at 2.8 the 50 f/1.4 beats it pretty solidly, 50 f/1.4 also has nicer contrast.  That all said I think I will keep it around, it makes my 5DM3 nicely portable and the quality certainly isn't bad, just doesn't hold up that well against the 50 f/1.4 which isn't THAT much bigger but is almost 2x the price.

I have a few photos of it on my camera http://digital.photorecommendations.com/recs/2012/06/40mm-stm-quick-review/ and I hope to rent a T4i in the next week or so and test the full time AF with STM - for those folks who are buying the T4i I think it is a no-brainer.

I don't want to hijack this thread but do folks think the new pricing on the 70-200 is here to stay or will it likely be rising in the near future.  Love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!
