Canon General / Re: Canon Professional Services

I became a Gold member a few month ago and have used them 3 times.  Clean and check on a Mark IV and 5D that I later sold and got a good price due to the CPS proof of work.  Lastly, I had a Mark II Clean and Checked in addition to the replacement of the CF socket with bent pins.

After I acquired my 1DX in July, I wanted to ensure that I had the fastest CF cards for continuous shooting.  I had always used SanDisk Extreme Pro cards but was concerned that their cards were rated at 82% of the comparable Lexar 32GB cards in the Galbraith review.  I have never lost an image on a SanDisk so I was confident in their storage quality but the speed bothered me.  I even contacted SanDisk to see if they were releasing faster cards soon and I got a "dance around" answer that did not indicate they were. Today, they still do not offer faster cards. Therefore, I purchased a pair of Lexar 1000X 32GB cards that were on sale at Adorama for $234.95.  There was a big run on that deal so it required 3 weeks for them to arrive.

I have used the Lexar cards exclusively since they arrived and always shoot with recording to both cards.  I have yet to hear the 1DX stop recording in a burst mode of 12fps whereas that occurred frequently with my 10fps Mark IV with the SanDisk cards.  I am pretty certain the Lexar would stop recording if my burst was long enough but that did not happen in the two football games I shot this fall.

I highly recommend Lexar and unless SanDisk matches their speed I will not purchase SanDisk again.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Convince me to shoot in RAW

...  I am so sick of hearing about RAW.  It's better for most things, you are retarded if you don't shoot RAW... Unless it's sports, or journalism and you need the jpgs in a hurry. or something.

....

Talk to one of my favorite photographers at the Arizona Republic and he'll tell you why he shoots raw and not jpg.  No other way than raw.

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Re: AA Battery Charger and Batteries
« on: November 07, 2012, 12:33:53 PM »
I have been using rechargeable NiMH batteries for many years.  Initially, I used Energizer batteries but they did not last long or recharge properly.  I have no idea about their current quality.  In April 2009, I purchased two La Crosse BC-900 chargers which came with their brand of NiMH AA and AAA batteries.  All I can say about the La Crosse batteries is that I was very disappointed. In July, 2009, I obtained Sanyo Eneloop AA and AAA batteries plus 4 Sanyo standard 2700 mAH batteries.  I had issues with the 2700 batteries but not the Eneloop.  I currently own 74 Eneloop AA and 43 Eneloop AAA batteries.  I will not buy any other NiMH battery but Eneloop.  The Eneloops give long life, many recharges and I have lost only one AAA so far after the warranty ran out. The Eneloops work great in my 580EX and many other devices.  I use them in adapters as C and D batteries.  I am trying to never purchase alkalines again.

In December 2010, I bought my first MAHA Powerex C9000.  I use it exclusively and need to sell my two La Crosse chargers.  The C9000 is so much better with the different options.  I purchased a 2nd C9000 in August so I can charge 8 Eneloops simultaneously.

The least expensive place to purchase Eneloops is at COSTCO.  They used to be available at costco.com but not currently.  I can get them at two of my local warehouses.  In June, 2012 I purchased 10 Eneloop AAA for $19.99 and 8 Eneloop AAs for also $19.99.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon EOS-1D X Firmware 1.0.6
« on: August 28, 2012, 07:04:43 PM »
Hi, just upgraded to 1.0.6.
I noticed that after formatting  a Lexar 32 GB the number of shots  (R+jpgL10)is now 665, and it used to be around 800 shots for that card.
I loaded an empty "old" card which gave me a free shot count of 807. I took one shot and the free count went down to 664
Did anybody notice same?

I noticed the back focus problem before, but I tought it was my own stupidity. I will try later this week
I also upgraded to 1.0.6.  I formatted both my Sandisk and Lexar 32GB cards after seeing your post above.  Shooting raw only, I get an available count of 925 photos when using them in the 1DX.

1D X Sample Images / Re: Any Thing shot with a 1Dx
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:52:43 PM »
On July 13, our son, Alex, and I shot photos using 2 separate cameras at a play where two of our grandchildren were part of the cast.

Alex used  my 1D Mark IV, and I used the 1DX body that arrived earlier that day. This shoot was exactly what I wanted to compare lens and bodies. I am ready for all kinds of night events with the new beauty.  Alex used the 70-200 mm f/2.8 Mark II lens and because the 1DX is full-frame, I used the 100-400 mm lens.

You can identify which camera was used by moving the mouse arrow to the i(nfo) indicator.

This Friday, I am shooting the first high school football game for this season using the 1DX and 100-400mm combination.  I will report back on results.

The wildlife photos earlier in this thread are unbelievable.  Nothing stops a Trane  ---- I mean a 1DX.

Both my 1DX and Mark IV came from Norman Camera.  Great service!  I enjoy working with Pat.  :) :) :)
