Lenses / Re: 135L vs 85L vs 70-200L II
« on: January 17, 2013, 09:10:59 AM »
I have the 85L ii and 70-200 2.8L is ii. I loved the 85L from the moment I took the first photo with it, then it was teamed with the 5D classic, now on the 5Diii, I love it even more!! The 70-200 2.8L is ii  I use for outdoor portraits, I love it too, it's definitely more versatile than the 85Lii.

I use a Hoya HD, and I have noticed vignetting at 70mm on the 5Diii, just thought it was the lens on FF but perhaps it is the filter, will have to try it without and see :-\

I have used the 70-300 f4-5.6 is usm NON-L lens on a 50D breifly in the rain and afterward standing under dripping trees, they got abit wet but no harm done.

Lenses / Re: 600mm F/4L IS AFMA settings

I test at 25x and 50x the FL, so for 500mm that's 12.5 m and 25 m.  May need to head outside.

Print the target on matte paper with an inkjet (not laser), have lots of light so you can get a fast shutter and still have >11 EV (even outdoors in sun, I add light with halogen lamps).  Light must be incandescent/halogen, not fluorescent or LED (unless the LED is powered by DC, not AC). Stable tripod, obviously.

If you have extenders, you need to test with them separately (and at even longer distances).
Excuse me if this is a really stupid question, but when it comes to this kind of thing I'm not too bright: Does the camera have to plugged into the computer while you're doing this? If so I guess a desktop computer's not much good if you need to be outdoors for the longer lenses. Can anyone post a basic sketch or photo of the setup for the dummies like me?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: What do you Love about the 5D3? POLL!

I love how the 5Diii will AF correctly, even when using a tricky lens like the 85 f1.2L at f1.2, so much of an improvement over my old 5Dc!

I have both the 5D iii, and 1D IV. I purchased the 2nd hand 1D IV after the 5D iii, in particular because I wished to practise bird photography, however for low-light shots or sunsets, I prefer the 5D iii, not so much because of iso performance (1D IV, although not as good as 5D iii is actually not too bad in my opinion) but due to the 1D IV has a problem with AF having difficulty locking focus in very low light.

If I had to limit myself to just one of these great cameras, 5D iii would be the choice by a narrow margin.

YES!!! I didn't realise how much until I'm forced to go back to a compact! I started with film point and shoots, my 1st digital was a 50D and I have the 5Diii and 1D IV and recently purchased a 1GX because of its small size so I always have a camera handy, but everytime I take it out, I'm really wishing that I had one of my Dslrs, because the compact is so slow, no easy access to some manual functions and the shots disappoint alot if they're not missed altogether- very frustrating!

Software & Accessories / Re: Are lens skins worth it?
« on: August 22, 2012, 03:57:49 AM »
I've always kind of had a problem with the bright 'oh wow, look at me' canon's. And they really do, scream 'look at me'. I've attracted way too much attention with the times I've been dragging one around.
LOL I even get attention just using my 70-200 f2.8Lis ii with (white) Kenko TC and it's not even that huge. What is perhaps more surprising is the amount of attention my cheapo black Sigma 150-500 gets especially when I have it zoomed out, don't think a skin would fix that!

EOS Bodies / Re: 1DX Worth the Money?
« on: August 20, 2012, 12:52:50 AM »
Well I made my final sale decision today.  I did not go with a second 1DX, but rather kept my 1D Mark IV and sold my 1Ds Mark III and a 5D Mark III I had earlier.  I really like the colors and extra reach with IQ on the 1D Mark IV for outdoor sports.  So yes, one 1DX was probably worth the 6800 but I decided the 1D4 was so good I wanted to keep that, and then the 5D3 for weddings/baby photos and quiet sports like tennis and golf.  Either way on the 1D4 you won't be disappointed, should you choose that route.

I decided to go with a 500 f4 instead of the dx and I'm now looking for a 1d3 or 1d4 :)! The 4 would be nicer with the 16 mp but most with pretty high shutter count seem to all be $4,500+ when new they were $5,000 I think lol but thanks for your post!
I've done the same but in a different order, I have the 5Diii and just bought a second hand 1D IV(wanted the f/p/s, but also the 1.3 crop) for Au$3,300.00 (the prices you mention seem excessive) with low shutter count, only problem was the sensor was filthy, now I'm saving for a 500 f/4L.

What's the AU to US conversion lol? But I'm aussiming that's still a good price! How do you like it?
Au$3300 =US$3455.76. approx. all the used 1D IVs on Ebay at the moment seem to be going for about that- give or take a few hundred.
Loving my 1D IV so far, although I haven't had opportunity to use it a great deal yet. Shots I've missed have been due to user error, it loves the best lenses and performs well with those, doesn't much like my Kenko pro 2xTC :'(

Lenses / Re: 100mm f/2.8L IS vs 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II for Macro
« on: August 19, 2012, 01:21:51 AM »
I'm not as experienced or knowledgable about photography as the previous posters, however I own both these lenses. I'd only consider using the 70-200 f2.8Lis ii for macro if I didn't happen to have my 100 f2.8L is with me and just had to photograph that bug/butterfly/flower for example. However the 100 f2.8L is is surprisingly versatile, especially good for portraits, it certainly isn't restricted to macro use only, in fact I'd say I use mine for macro only 50% of the time.

Here's a couple of shots from the archives taken with my 70-300 is, I don't use this lens anymore (prefer 70-200L is ii) and am debating whether I will sell it.
