Thanks for your kind advice. I am just experimenting different equipment I could get hold of.

I love my 40D so far. I will work hard this summer and save some $$ for my next target.

I guess beginners (like myself) normally start with a rebel.  Actually, I couldn't even afford a 600D. I borrowed it from my friend for this weekend. I am stilling shooting with a 40D which I have bought with the recommendations of some kind people here in this forum.

Of course there are exceptions......but will people put a cheap vintage lens like mine on a 1 or 3 series  body.

Or may be I should alter the subject to "anything shot with a cheap vintage manual lens on a rebel body" or "anything shot with a vinatge manual lens on a Canon body". I decide to choose the later because, there may be someone who shoots with their Leica lenses on expensive FF bodies.

Thank you for asking me anyway.

(as an alternative to the expensive modern lenses)

Taken with a $15 Sigma 28mm 2.8 mini wide attached to a 600D with a OM to eos adapter ring with focus confirmation chip.
The venue is not really well- lit. camera set to aperture priority and lens f2.8 (maximum aperture)
Mild sharpening adjustment in Photoshop.

Please post your images taken with all brands of vintage manual lenses on a Canon(modified) body.

Some more shot with Helios 44M 58mm F.2

Cathedral - helios  44-2 58mm-F2 1976 Russian lens ( panorama ) $30
Unionville fest 2013 - sigma 28mm F2.8 mini-wide manual lens       $20

Not great shots at all but useable images after some simple processings.

Thanks for all your advices.

I almost made up my mind to continue shooting with my 40D for the time being for stills. As for video, my dad will let me use his 5D MK III or ID IV(too heavy for me) if necessary - for school and community projects.

He has 7 L lenses now - 24 1.4L II, 50 1.2L. 85 1.2L. one TS, 2 zoom lenses and a huge 300 2.8 and has recently acquired a Sigma 35 1.4 and a Samyang 35 1.4( same range and seems weird to me but he has the spare money to spend).

I will definitely go for FF and buy a refurbished or lightly used 6D in a year's time.

I am planning to upgrade my Canon 40D to a more advanced camera. 40D isn't bad at all but it doesn't come with video shooting features at all. I can save up to around $1K or a little bit more in a few months' time.
A friend of mine from Asia said that she could buy me a new 7D (grey market) for US$880 and bring it to me when she visits me some time early summer.

Then it's the new Nikon D7100 coming with a lot of interesting features.
Which one should I pick ?

I know lens would be an important consideration. For the time being, I mainly borrow my dad's canon lens. If I switch to the other brand, I can use my brother's lenses.

Don't have to wait for the Calgary CES. The showroom in Hong Kong serves more or less the same purposes. They have very polite and  professional people there explaining Canon products and you are free to play and test with all the cameras and lenses. Super-tele lenses are set up therein and you can view the beautiful scenery of the harbor too.
I went there with my dad once during our last trip to Asia in 2010 and was very impressed.
Btw, you will find very beautifully printed brochures for their products there.

Thanks to the kind people here who had helped me to make a decision to choose my 40D which I enjoyed shooting with very much.

I made a triptych with 3 photos taken with 50 1.8 and I followed Gavin Hoey's tutorial to edit and merge them to what it looked like in the attachment.

Hope you guys like it.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon 40D or XS
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:00:56 AM »
I am in the dilemma of buying either of the above cameras. My friend has a 40D and he's asking for $320 (body only) and his camera has 15K actuations on it. My brother insists that for the same money, I could easily find a XS with kit lens.

In some forums, people are saying that 40D had a bad shutter durability record. However, XS seems to me a lower end product of  canon to me.

My dad promises me to give me a few of his canon lenses to start with if I have a camera body. But, I worry about the err99 and shutter problem.

Can anybody enlighten me in this regard and help me to make a decision.

Thanks for everybody's input. I really appreciate it.

I ended up buying my friend's 40D which I will get next week. I'll put on some lenses and start shooting.

Cheers and have a happy shooting life.

I'd go with the 40D - more rugged than the XS - get it serviced and it will last a long time.

Btw, which lenses will you be getting from your father?

Cheers

He has a Tamron 17-50  and a Canon EF 55-200mm which he rarely uses now and I'll be taking over them if I have my own camera body.  My dad has stepped up to some expensive L lenses.
