Site Information / Re: CR0, CR1, CR2?
« on: July 27, 2011, 09:01:48 AM »
Exactly what I was looking for.

Now I see it on the page, it's position and design makes it looks like an advert which I think is why I skipped over it  :-[  oopps

Thank you
 :)
Yes, these days our minds just skips whatever seems to be an advert ! :)
Exactly.  People go through GREAT lengths to block this stuff (thus, the website you're reading doesn't get paid for it) with software when it's just as easy to mentally screen it out.

New England; Fall Foliage --- excellent time to build your self-esteem as a photographer  ;D

Speaking from one that's gone your route (graduated Brooks Institute, your schools competition in, 2004), I have a few bits of advice and clarification.  When I started in the early 2001, they required a 35mm film camera.  By the time I graduated, they didn't have that requirement anymore because they were in the process of going strictly digital, which was a decision I opposed at the time.  While I was there, the first half of my time was dedicated to film and fundamentals... 35mm, 4x5's, medium format, studio, advanced studio, lighting, portraiture, strobes, etc... My school had a large rental dept that was free to students for 3 day rentals on most equipment, however the popular stuff got taken quickly so if you really liked a certain piece, they suggested you get a student loan and buy the gear to insure you always had them for your disposal.

That sounds a lot more reasonable.  Thanks for the info.

I have a question (to anyone who really knows) about the original topic:
Is it common for courses like this to REQUIRE actual PURCHASE of a body/lenses?

I ask because from what I remember of college, books/materials etc. were ungodly expensive and were basically recommended at random by professors and we racked up a lot of debt for items that occasionally were never used.

--------
The original poster's comments does not have me worried about her specifically, because it looks like she's serious and on a pro path.  But these sound like entry level courses at the beginning and, at very least, it seems as if the college could have arranged for a group rental deal for people who are hard up, at least on lenses.

The economy still isn't great, and, forgive my heresy, you may be a Nikon shooter later on -- requiring purchase of a FF camera so early on seems, well, detached from reality.

-------

Sorry for the slight deviation in topic; I was just surprised that it was still SOP to have students jump into major purchases on top of normal tuition costs.

Congratz on the scholarship.

Maybe they didn't have a stock picture of the 60D.  ;D

Yep.  No 60Ds laying around let alone anything to take a new picture with  :)

EOS Bodies / Re: BUY 5d MkII now or WAIT for 5d MkIII????
« on: July 25, 2011, 08:26:17 AM »
I am sitting here waiting...
I could buy a 5dMk2 but I need to sell my 17-55 f/2.8 IS, as it is an EF-S lens...

my problem is that I can't afford to actually replace that lens!
I am now stuck, as I have started reading rumours.... uh-oh the slippery slope is waiting!
my problem is that my head is telling me, wait until you can afford a complete replacement
(5DMk2 + 17-40L + 50 f/1.4)
but... my head then tells me you know a 5DMk3 could be announced tomorrow and you could end up kicking yourself!

I am now tempted to switch my 17-55 for a 17-40L in preparation and swap my 50 f/1.8 for the f/1.4 USM
but again my head tells me... they might release a lens with the 5D3

Arrrgh, this is killing me! I am turning schizophrenic, next I will be hopping around and talking about "My Preciousssss!"

 :o
Like everyone says: buy it if you need it.  Money-wise unless something crazy happens that causes tings to skyrocket, the more mileage you can get out of an existing body, the better off you are.

Right now does happen to be a good time to sell the 50mm f1.8; if you were careful about catching a deal/watching the price, you could probably pick up the f1.4 ~$375 -- watch Amazon/Newegg for promos etc.

The only thing you can really do wrong at this point (since you're determined to go FF) is to buy any more EF-S lenses . . .

Canada / Re: Questions about crossing the border with your gear

If you've EVER been "caught smuggling" something into the US, you go on a list and are forever given the 3rd degree.

Had a friend of the family that's put on custom's watch list; gets a thorough going over every time her or her husband come back into the country.

The contraband in question was Chinese Beef Jerky  ;D

I do have one question for Preston though . . . how good do your legs look that they really needed to take your pants? :)

but i don't get the connotation there...?

Perverse = demented . . . not perverted :D

I thought you were going for a runthrough of the history-of-the-world chess scene  ;D

Re: weather sealing -- I get it now.  Makes sense. I'm too timid (with camera equipment) to NEED weather proofing.  I DOVE into my car after my 15-85mm got sprayed with snow coming off a drift and was beading up on the camera/lens (just to dry it off).  I suppose that fear will fade with time.

The 200mm L is on my short list as well.

At $800 and it being a black lens, it's a lot more low-key than the 'big white lens' -- it's supposed to be REALLY sharp.

To be specific, you mean the 200mm f/2.8L II.  "200 L" could also refer to the 200mm f/2L IS - which is not black, not low-key, definitely no where near $800, but is really REALLY sharp.

The 200/2.8L II is a very nice lens - I had one for a while, which I sold after getting the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II.  One thing to note is that you need a fair bit of light to handhold a non-IS lens at 200mm, especially on a crop body.

This is true - I only found out the f2 version existed yesterday and . . . wow.  Sharpness does NOT come cheap over 100mm -- I was eyeing the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II after so much talk about it here and could just HEAR the wife spelling it out to me: d-i-v-o-r-c-e  ;D

If I arrange some trip where I could use it (she likes to travel) -- I could easily throw that one by her in the form of a rental :)

You know, I think I finally found a use for those STUPID lens mugs!

What a great idea (not actually using lenses for chess). ;)

The picture on the CR home page shows a 50D with a 60D badge rather than a 60D  :o

That's hilarious; you're totally right. I didn't even notice.

then go on to tell us how the 7D has better IQ than the T3i.

That's an easy one; the internet is full of (it) answers on the topic:
The metal body and microfocus adjustments make the 7D pro while the 60D and T3i are toys  ;D

I'm in love.  I'll take two.

I d better not tell you the current price ... anyway have a look at my flickr account there is a little more background info on this car ...

Nice writeup.  Looks like replicas go for the paltry sum of $133k :D  Just the price of a brand new panamera turbo S . .

Still pretty sexy. That 507 bimmer is pretty slick too.  My taste for old European cars does not match up with my taste for martinis and spaghetti . . . I doubt I'd fit in most with the top up.  :-\

Wow, that's a great price.

I think you're going to love the 15-85 on the 7D.  My only real gripe about the 60D is I'd like 100% viewfinder coverage, but I'm already used to it.

Congratz.

While I am decidedly not a fan of pocket cameras, they are popular, and the right choice for many.

Check out the point and shoot cameras on the Canon refurb site, and then, if you have a old film slr or broken powershot, trade it in using the Canon loyalty Program and you might get a further discount.  I broke down and ordered a 7D yesterday  thru the CLP (trading in a broken old EOS IX lite), and they told me that some power shot cameras were also available on the program.

Currently $319 for a S95 and less for a s90.

What was your out-the-door on the 7D?

Just curious :)
