For viewing outside, the new iPads and iPhones (4s and newly sold 4) all have polarized screens.

This is a double-edged sword, because if you're viewing an iPhone through polarized glasses, it's bluish and hard to read; the iPad is black altogether . . . unless you turn either to landscape mode.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24 f/2.8 IS & EF 28 f/2.8 IS Quick Review
« on: June 29, 2012, 02:42:45 PM »
Pretty impressive considering the numbers on the 28mm wide open are comparable to the 24LII stopped down to f/2.8.  I bet that 28mm is damn sharp on an APS-C sensor.

Sorry, but considering the price for a non L prime with 2.8, I would have expected an even better performance...

These are really niche primes, I wonder what type of videos these are good for? (where I do not have other options...)

Seriously, I can think of many other primes, who would have been due for a nice update.

my 2 cents

Honestly, that was everyone's gripe about the 15-85mm . . . I think this is the best (price-wise) we're going to get.  Anything cheaper and it'll be that STM category.

These will move well (I think) when Adorama/B&H/Beach Camera etc. start packaging them in high-end camera bundles where you get them for a few hundred off.

EOS Bodies / Re: 7D Firmware officially announced

So, 7D owners get THIS and 60D owners get a serial number and spell check fix?

Seems fair  :o

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Re: Thoughts on hand straps?

+1 to OEM Canon handstrap . . . I have an Arca-Swiss plate for both my 5DmkII and 60D that accepts the strap, throw on the BlackRapid sniper shoulder strap for each and you've got IMO the most critical accessories ever.

Neruo clued me in to an "A-dapta" (Johnny Cash style) for a manfrotto ball head and it's a perfect circle of utility and ergonomics . . .

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon EOS 60D & 60Da Firmware Updates

Oh thank goodness, the first 5000 shots on my 60D were a NIGHTMARE over this.

Seriously, THIS is what you give us? How about MFA goofuses?

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 14-24 f/2.8L [CR2]

Hope it's smaller than the Nikon version.
For now my Samyang 14mm serves me very well. (Sometimes I can't believe how sharp it is.)
But canon 14-24 will be THE prefect lens to get, assuming the size is not too big.
I've been so disappointed with Canon lately but surely this is a great news.

Is this the same as the $400 Rokinon?  I had one for two days and returned it because it wasn't sharp, even stopped down (I didn't expect much to start with, but even so)

You forgot to post the obligatory $1900 price tag :(

This sounds like a very good FF lens and a wicked crop-body lens . . . seriously though, if we're super lucky it'll be $1400

Lenses / Re: Looking for EF 24-105 f4L aftermarket replacement...
« on: June 14, 2012, 04:06:49 PM »
I had a EF 24-105mm f/4L on my 5D Mark II, but wasn't happy with the image quality. I had to stop it down to about f/8 in order to get decent sharpness. Wide open, it was pretty soft. I bought it second hand, and may have gotten a bad copy, but it's a story worth telling(?). Sold it (without any complaints) and bought a new Tamron SP 28-75mm f/2.8. Stopped down to f/4, it's as sharp as my copy of the EF 24-105mm at f/8, but at one third of the price. However, it does have a bit slower AF. I would try it out in a store.

I can't help but wonder if it could have benefited from MFA.  I've been meaning to run FoCal over my existing lenses, but so far I've lucked out and had no real issues with my lenses.  Still, I wonder if the 5DmkII would be even more amazing with adjustment.

I'm with everyone else in that there's no real 'cheap 24-105'.

Honestly, I think this lens would retail for $1400+ if it came out today and didn't have the benefit of being a high-volume kit lens.

Look at the good non-L zoom lenses, they're basically the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM -- neither have a low price tag, and those are EF-S (you mentioned wanting FF as well).

Look at the desirable non-Canon zooms, you have the ultra-wides, which are both non-ef AND not that cheap, and then there's that new Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD, which looks awesome, but we're back at high price.

Honestly, for the range you're not going to find a better deal.

Now, people have mentioned primes, which I'm more and more warming up to as I get better at photography, better images at around half the price.  Do you have access to a possibly loaner 24-105 that you can narrow down what FOV you would favor?

Please, post your opinion and/or pictures with your 60D.  Especially if its portraits, action shots, or macro.  I'm gonna buy a 60D with the 18-200 lens before the end of June since that's when the rebates stop.  My newborn son is growing fast and I'm missing a lot of memories from a slow p&s.  I really just need reassurance that even if the 60D is 2 years old its still capable of awesome shots!  I really can't afford to wait for a 70D nor afford the price.  I'm just assuming a 70D is coming out and based on the rise in price of the new rebel.  Please help me out!

The 60D is fast enough AF and FPS and it has a lot of really nice features.  No hesitation on recommending it.

The 15-85mm is nice and sharp and fast to focus . . . if I had only one lens to choose on that body, that would be it (my first setup actually), for the second, I'd recommend the 50mm 1.4

50mm is my favorite focal length on a crop body for children that you're around (close enough to supervise them)

Ken Rockwell and DxO will review it soon

Ken is behind the game, I would have expected him to have a full review out on Friday!  ;D ;D ;D

Making fun of Ken Rockwell - even though he very well deserves it - doesn't make you look pro. FYI.
i think brian will be the first to admit he's not a pro :P

I dont even look like a pro - good job I wasn't making fun of Ken or DxO then

Wait, who's Ken Rockwell?  <- See, now THAT makes you not look like a pro (Yes, I know who Rockwell is) :D

I dunno, it seems like this puts some writing on the wall for the 60D . . . hopefully that writing says "coming soon"?

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Information.

Wow...a very flat, very light normal prime. Such a lens will make carrying and shooting with my forthcoming 1D X like.....carrying and shooting with a 1D X.  Guess I just don't see the point.  Maybe with the new Rebel...

Maybe you can wear it around as a monocle?

Besides, this will be out a full year before the 1Dx hits the street :D

What's going on Craig?

Where's the CR?

The new 18-135, do we have any anticipated specs (meaning is it a crappy kit lens, a high quality EF-S lens, or a sub-L 15-85 quality lens that only got boned because it's APS-C)?

Hook us up brother!

If the T4i is good enough, the 60D/7D should be more absurdly out of spec that we get an upgrade . . . or we languish in a void to the specialty market . . . whatever works for Canon.
