Lenses / Re: Looking for EF 24-105 f4L aftermarket replacement...
« on: June 14, 2012, 01:01:44 PM »
I'm with everyone else in that there's no real 'cheap 24-105'.

Honestly, I think this lens would retail for $1400+ if it came out today and didn't have the benefit of being a high-volume kit lens.

Look at the good non-L zoom lenses, they're basically the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM -- neither have a low price tag, and those are EF-S (you mentioned wanting FF as well).

Look at the desirable non-Canon zooms, you have the ultra-wides, which are both non-ef AND not that cheap, and then there's that new Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD, which looks awesome, but we're back at high price.

Honestly, for the range you're not going to find a better deal.

Now, people have mentioned primes, which I'm more and more warming up to as I get better at photography, better images at around half the price.  Do you have access to a possibly loaner 24-105 that you can narrow down what FOV you would favor?

Please, post your opinion and/or pictures with your 60D.  Especially if its portraits, action shots, or macro.  I'm gonna buy a 60D with the 18-200 lens before the end of June since that's when the rebates stop.  My newborn son is growing fast and I'm missing a lot of memories from a slow p&s.  I really just need reassurance that even if the 60D is 2 years old its still capable of awesome shots!  I really can't afford to wait for a 70D nor afford the price.  I'm just assuming a 70D is coming out and based on the rise in price of the new rebel.  Please help me out!

The 60D is fast enough AF and FPS and it has a lot of really nice features.  No hesitation on recommending it.

The 15-85mm is nice and sharp and fast to focus . . . if I had only one lens to choose on that body, that would be it (my first setup actually), for the second, I'd recommend the 50mm 1.4

50mm is my favorite focal length on a crop body for children that you're around (close enough to supervise them)

Why did I expect to see stacks of flapjacks with fried mars bars on them? :)

Ken Rockwell and DxO will review it soon

Ken is behind the game, I would have expected him to have a full review out on Friday!  ;D ;D ;D

Making fun of Ken Rockwell - even though he very well deserves it - doesn't make you look pro. FYI.
i think brian will be the first to admit he's not a pro :P

I dont even look like a pro - good job I wasn't making fun of Ken or DxO then

Wait, who's Ken Rockwell?  <- See, now THAT makes you not look like a pro (Yes, I know who Rockwell is) :D

I dunno, it seems like this puts some writing on the wall for the 60D . . . hopefully that writing says "coming soon"?

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Information.

Wow...a very flat, very light normal prime. Such a lens will make carrying and shooting with my forthcoming 1D X like.....carrying and shooting with a 1D X.  Guess I just don't see the point.  Maybe with the new Rebel...

Maybe you can wear it around as a monocle?

Besides, this will be out a full year before the 1Dx hits the street :D

What's going on Craig?

Where's the CR?

The new 18-135, do we have any anticipated specs (meaning is it a crappy kit lens, a high quality EF-S lens, or a sub-L 15-85 quality lens that only got boned because it's APS-C)?

Hook us up brother!

If the T4i is good enough, the 60D/7D should be more absurdly out of spec that we get an upgrade . . . or we languish in a void to the specialty market . . . whatever works for Canon.

The combustion engine has been around for 100 yrs, but with the advances in other technologies(battery) electric cars are starting to look more and more appealing.

IC is going nowhere any time soon.  Both Subaru and Mazda are going full-on "KISS" and aiming for better gains from conventional wisdom (optimizing, weight reduction etc.) over more complicated models, and Ford is betting big on twin-turbo.

Before SLR goes anywhere, we're going to need to see a consistent lineup of better products from a variety of sources . . .

What is the PowerShot S100V, a typo?

Don't see anything about it on their website.

Lenses / Re: 70-300L on 5D Mark III
« on: May 30, 2012, 11:34:32 AM »
Is the 70-300mmL worth the extra dough over the standard 70-300mm? Thats the Question... 8)

The Non-L is garbage IMO.  Worst lens purchase I've ever made :(  I've honestly used my 200mm f2.8 more than the 70-300 I have and I've only had it a few months.

IQ was a major letdown.

Also, who'd want a 50mm f14?

Lol should be cheap, not a lot of glass. ;)

It's actually going to be internal into the new mirrorless.

It'll make up for digital viewfinders slurping keynoter by being very small ;)

You're going to buy every part and accessory you can until they ship you that 1Dx, aren't you? :)

Good writeup as usual Neuro; let us see some shots with/without when you have time.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 70D & EOS 7D Mark II Speculation [CR1]
« on: May 21, 2012, 02:40:00 PM »
70D sounds logical as a more or less rebodied 7D with flipscreen. However the AF of the 7D is already good enough for Bird in Flight and most sports  - so the 7D mkII needs more than just a better AF and viewfinder upgrade. It needs better IQ and that is only possible with a new designed sensor ...

If they did that, put MFA back in, they'd seriously have a contender, that's for sure.

Canon General / Re: Suggestions on new Canon DSLR -- thinking 60D
« on: May 18, 2012, 02:53:51 PM »

Nice shot Brian!

Didn't the cat get annoyed by the flash? A friend of mine got bitten by his cat due to flash firing  :D

Sounds like a nice set of fur gloves to me.

The 60D is a great camera coming from P&S cameras, but the T4i is going to be a super shooter if they put DigicV in it.  At very least, wait until next month to figure out what the 'new cameras' are, most likely the price of the 60D will only improve.

Craig was nice enough to reply to an e-mail to me a few years back and recommended the 60D and the 15-85mm, which was a great setup.  The only changeout I might suggest is the 24-105mmL which I got afterwards, but the 15 is nice on the crop body.

If you at all care about image quality, I really would shy away from cheaper glass over 100mm --- I have a 70-300 that I just plain hate.  Honestly, I got a used 200mm F 2.8 L and I love it.  I use it on my FF or with a TC (1.4) on my 60D with a monopod and lens ring and it's just awesome what I can get out of it.

So, in short (too late), go with a cheaper body and better glass if you can.  LightRoom (and other software) have lens-specific correction for vignetting and barrel distortion, making lenses like the 15-85mm comparable to an L lens in a lot of circumstances.

Also, don't be afraid of used gear (lensrentals has a buy area that I've gotten 3 lenses from).
