Repair wise, he barely indicates that Canon has the edge over Nikon. They both have 5 lenses/bodies on the list, but Nikon does show up higher on it on average. The repair cost & time of Nikon service is somewhat higher.

He does use "Nikon fanboy" a lot - probably some personal experience there he is talking to. Reading between the lines I think he has a bit of a grudge against Nikon because they stopped selling repair parts to him and raised prices.

As far as I can tell Canon has somewhat better reliability and repair service, but it doesn't seem to be enough to get excited about. As usual Canon and Nikon are more or less neck and neck.

By the way I'm all Canon and will never buy a Nikon.

When talking to friends about DSLRs, I always favor Canon, but if they're not going to Canon, go with Nikon; community size and availability of used lenses (not to mention available options) is on par.

That said, I have to 100% agree with Roger on the fanboy thing; it's starting to die down here, but man it got nasty and irrational.

Good find marekjoz, I love reading Roger's stuff.  Before making any purchase decisions, I always read up on what he and neuro have to say; I'm rarely disappointed after making an informed decision. :)

Lenses / Re: Which to get: 50mm f/1.8 or 35mm f/2?
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:34:58 AM »
Hi all.

Ive got a 60D with the new STM 18-135 lens.

Im looking for a prime lens. I cant spend a ton of money at this point as id still consider myself an amateur but I want to have something in this range to work with. I would consider upgrading later on if I find that I've outgrown my equipment. Im not looking for an expensive lens for right now.

Thoughts on which lens is better for me?

thanks team!

You need to figure out your sweet spots . . . how many photos do you have with the STM?  The best thing to do is figure out where most  of your shots have been in the range of the zoom you have and choose those.  If you're always shooting at one end or the other, you may need something you don't already have for range.

DxOMark who? The guys (actually the only guys on earth) who state that EF 70-200 F4 IS L is better than EF 70-200 F2.8 IS L II?

Of course. IS makes it all bad, and stuff  ::)

EOS Bodies / Re: Is that really it for Canon at Photokina 2012?

Before this descends, as it always does, into madness, I'd like to point out: with the exception of literal, sales driving events in the camera world (holiday season, which now drives itself, regardless of the holiday is celebrated, due to competition) and things like the Olympics . . . releasing based on shows and not around your R&D/production abilities is not really the greatest thing.

"We" come to expect it, but Apple is a prime example of how we all really need to adjust our expectations and the companies need to do what is actually possible, to maintain their reputation.  Don't announce something because everyone else is, announce it when you can provide it.

Look at the 'o-noes' from the non-iphone5 launch in the spring of last year; everything pointed to Apple moving their iphone dev cycle to match the ipod which announces every September.  Then, they expected a whole new phone one year after the old one was released, which isn't really the pattern.

No, we shouldn't expect anything else from Photkina, Yes, we should expect something else at a different interval.

Look at the powershot series, updates and availability they seem to have down to a formula, which is great.  They need to do the same with DSLRs, and maybe we only get new models every 4 years, but if the quality is better, the equipment takes better shots, then so be it.

Do we have good cameras? Yes.  Do we have great cameras? Yes.  For some, the sky is falling, we've been told so many times, especially in the last few weeks.

There WILL BE no credible rumors until the social media attention lovers see something else shiny and stop winding everyone up.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 7D to 5D III upgrade..worth it?
« on: September 18, 2012, 12:45:02 PM »
This thread was basically what I was looking for.  I have a 60D and 5DmkII, and was considering a 7D upgrade for the crop.

The only thing I could really find that the MKII had that the MKIII doesn't is stereo mics . . .

So there's no real advantage (other than having a backup body) if I get the MKIII --- right?

Someone needs to get fired over no Calculator Mouse refresh.

I heard Nikon's developing a calculator-mouse-camera with a 46mp FF sensor . . . what the heck Canon?

Does anyone know if the folks at nikon rumors hate nikon so much as people hate canon here?
For what i've seen and heard they dont. We should grow up.

Who here has thought about talking to their mothers about all the hate you have about canon? I'm sure she could help somehow. (ps. I'm not trying to troll anyone, just saying)

You can post things like this until you're blue in the face . . . but in the end, you just have to wait out the latest surge.  They tried to rile everyone up at the 5DmkIII launch but no one really bit (except over price).  Once the D600 started getting rumors, they went for another round and we really fell for it.

GREAT news!  I was holding off because of this (and the 60D isn't compatible, so I can only calibrate the 5DmkII)

This is an exciting development.  Up next: iphone-based calibration  ;D

It's nice on a personal level but it's just another piece of organizational data, much like most of the EXIF data.  If, at some point, you want to gather all shots from location X, you can do so over the years.

In the end, it doesn't have a direct commercial application that I can see, aside from if you need to tell someone where something was, you have to look it up on a map, as opposed to have it typed in already.

I am a Canon user and have been for the past 10 years.  I don't really want to switch to Nikon - I like the Canon form factor and am relatively happy with the kit I have.  That said - I do feel that Canon has been holding back features for 2-3 years and that Nikon has been offering more for the same or less money.

I am a long time reader here...  I just wanted to voice my opinion on the matter with a little humor...
Post some photos and share your experiences and knowledge.  I apologize for being rude, its just that a new announcement brings out the trolls in droves.  They post a couple of critical comments and we never hear from them again.

I'm with "IBTL"boy . . . I don't see any trolls here . . .

Incidentally, do you all know that we can sequentially read posts that you've added and see if, for example, Nikon is an addiction of choice?

(Yes, I've been playing a bit of Gimley myself lately; odd what one does with an infestation)

As in for Trolls  ;D  Honestly, they released it to make everyone on the forum that already doesn't like Canon mad.

Seriously, the same fifteen people are beating the same drum on 8 different threads.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon Announces the Canon EOS 6D DSLR

Okay, so nonstop complaining aside, here's a thought:
Wouldn't it have made sense to release an "L" version of an STM lens with this?

Oh thank goodness we got some Nikon posts on the first page.  I guess that guy from SoHo was sleeping, but you guys got our back!

I'm gonna go sell all my gear and switch to Nikon now.

So has anyone CONFIRMED that there is no MFA or are we just playing chicken little?

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 6D Specs Leaked?

I think it's time craig updates the main post with a BUSTED note.

Lots of people pointing out wifi isn't going to happen, GPS probably the same.  As I mentioned, SD makes NO sense placed between a 5D and 7D.

Most people are just jumping in new here to fan the Nikon fervor or bemoan some of the other made-up specs . . .

It's just another slow news day now that Apple doesn't have a top secret ipad fourteen to stir up BS about.
