It sure is an awesome place. You need to go there soon as people have been moving and stealing rocks. Everytime I go one or two rocks that I've shot in the past have disappeared and all that's left are their tracks. Another sad part is that there are people who have driven their vehicles on the playa with leaving tire marks.

Awesome location and shot!  I would love to go there.

I took a few friends to Racetrack Playa for a weekend camping trip and here's one of the shots from that weekend. I left my white balance to cloudy by mistake but I kind of like the colors it produced so I didn't even bother correcting it in post.

I would go with Manfrotto. You could get an aluminum tripod for about $100.

Very, very nice shots! I was there too over the weekend showing my friends around so I wasn't really able to shoot a lot.

I was also there a few days before Christmas when there was a lot of snow. I wished there was more snow over the weekend, but I guess Global Warming has changed that!

I only used 1 lens the entire weekend: TS-E 24mm 3.5L II. I didn't even bother using other lenses. I think those who were shooting with 70-200mm were there for the Fire Falls near El Cap.

Here's one of my shots from the weekend.

I just came back from Yosemite. I have to admit that February is now my favorite month to visit that region. The valley floor is still a bit busy, but the hiking trails are pretty quiet. I was not able to see the Horsetail Fall's Fire Fall due to it being cloudy when I went to watch it. There were well over a hundred photographers there waiting to catch a shot though! Anyhow if you have the option too, I would highly recommend staying a weekend in Yosemite during the month of February. Just don't wear tennis shoes!!!

I did notice that about 80% of photographers were walking around with a 70-200 F2.8 (canon/nikon/tamron/etc.). For the life of me, I could not figure this out! For my entire trip, I was constantly reaching for my 14mm uwa lens. If that was not on the camera, the 50mm was. I only put my 70-200mm on my camera 3 times over the course of the trip.

I do understand wanting that focal range for the waterfalls when observing from a distance, but these lenses were everywhere. Does anyone know why everyone in Yosemite has that lens attached to their camera 24/7???

You should go to False Kiva in addition to Mesa Arch next time you go to Canyonlands. Here are 2 shots I took in November when I went.

Mesa Arch at Canyonlands National Park. Touristy part of the park but it's still a cool location.

I have a Vixen Polarie Star Tracker that I bought in the Fall and have yet to try it out.

Axilrod's images excites me to get started.

@ Axilrod - thanks for the info. I'll definitely try your tips.

I was in Death Valley last month just before Christmas and was thinking of shooting some Milky Way stuff at Racetrack Playa but the temp was in the 20s and I just couldn't hack the cold. I just ended up shooting some sunrise and sunsets there. Plus, like you said, the Milky Way's bulging disc in the middle wasn't visible so it looked a bit odd to me and didn't give me any extra motivation to stay up. I'll go back there in late spring or early summer and maybe I'll take home with me a Milky Way image.

Here's one from that trip.

@Axilrod - What was your ISO when you shot these? Was the moon out? If it was, what phase of the moon was it? I'm not sure if having moonlight is important so the foreground illuminated a bit. I too have had difficulty focusing at night. :(

I was going to head out to DV over the weekend too but forecast is that there won't be clouds until Sunday. For me, no clouds mean boring sunrise and sunset photos. :(

The place is awesome though and you'll have fun exploring and driving around DV.
