Canon General / Compact camera for travel/everyday use
« on: July 22, 2013, 10:13:34 PM »
Looking for a compact body for travel. Would prefer an optical viewfinder over an electronic one if possible, and one that has great ISO performance in this segment. Don't know if I am asking too much but would be great if I can get clean images upto 1600 in low light conditions and usable upto 3200/6400.  I don't know if such compact bodies come with fast primes, or fast zooms but a fixed aperture lens would be nice. Basically looking to replace my 5D3 when I want to travel light or just out and about. Any recommendations?

Not sure if this should be in this forum, but here goes. One of the first shot from the 70-200 MK II. Absolutely love this lens!

Canon General / Question about Refurbished Lens from Canon Direct
« on: June 26, 2013, 10:46:40 PM »
I just got my refurbished 70-200 IS II today which I ordered from Canon Direct. Upon close inspection I noticed there is a small scratch/blemish on the front element. A very minor paint chip near the tripod collar. Everything else seems fine. No noticeable dust inside, and works fine. Also I was under the impression that Canon ships their refurbished lenses in a 'refurbished' box. In my case they shipped my lens inside the soft case that came with the 70-200 IS II. Anyone else experienced similar case?

Also, I was wondering if I should return the lens. The minor scratch on the front element is bugging me, even though that mark shouldn't affect the images.

Landscape / From top of Mammoth Mountain
« on: June 23, 2013, 10:36:45 AM »
View from 11053 feet from the Mammoth Mountain summit. The weather at the time was beautiful, and the view was to die for.

I managed to lose 83 photos from this series as the camera failed to write the images onto the memory card. I have not managed to repair those corrupted images as of yet. As a result, some of the most precious moments I had of this place are now forever lost. Yet, I was given a second chance to go out and take some quick snaps of the view from this summit before descending. A big thanks to the wonderful folks I was traveling with.

Lenses / Advice on which lens to upgrade/replace/add
« on: June 19, 2013, 07:11:58 AM »
Saved up enough for a 70-200 f2.8L IS II. Initially I thought I would replace my current 70-200 f2.8L (non IS) with the mark II. But now I am confused which lens to upgrade/replace/consolidate. I like to travel light, and given my travel habit (with family most of the time) I usually take around 2 lenses, a medium tripod, 1x ND filter and a remote trigger.

Travel kit (these two lens combination worked really well for me so far)
16-35 f2.8L II - Landscape
70-200 f2.8L - Landscape/portrait

Family & friends events kit
24-70 f2.8L (have not tried any other lens combination yet)
580 EX II

General walk-around
24-70 f2.8L
50 1.8 II

I would say all my lenses get almost equal amount of usage in a year, and I am pretty happy with these glasses. I guess I am trying to find out which one to upgrade first, or maybe add a prime. At one point I was thinking maybe get the 70-200 f2.8L IS II and a 1.4x Extender first. So my question is, if you were to upgrade one glass from the list, which one would you replace first. Also, if you were to add a glass (for e.g. travel, family events, walk-around, indoor portrait) to the list, then which would one would you consider? Hope I made sense, and thank you for your recommendation and advice.

Lenses / Lens got sprayed with mists from waterfall. TODO?
« on: May 31, 2013, 11:51:02 PM »
Was shooting the Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite, and it was windier than usual that day. I was using the 16-35 II, and I had a ND filter on. After the shoot, I realized the mist from the waterfall nearly soaked the interior of the hood. Like soaked it pretty well enough that there was a small pool of water inside the hood, and front of the filter glass. I have wiped the lens down, but do I need to take extra measures to make sure its dried well enough. I guess I am a bit paranoid.

Software & Accessories / Help! Fix or convert damaged RAW files =(
« on: May 28, 2013, 07:04:12 PM »
Anyone know of any apps that can fix/or atleast convert damaged raw (CR2 format) files? When importing into Lightroom I get a 'Files appear to be unsupported or damaged' prompt. I tried opening them in PS, but no success. I was using a 5D3 and at one point I borrowed a Transcend 32GB card from a friend of mine, as all of my cards ran out of space at the time. The files appear to be of normal size, but I cannot open them.

PS: One of the damaged file did import into Lightroom, and is viewable. Only 15% of the image did not record when it was saving into the card. The damaged part of the image ofcourse did not render).

Any advice is appreciated.

Lenses / Anyone upgraded from their 24-70L to 24-70L MKII?
« on: April 29, 2013, 09:41:33 AM »
I was looking at my photo library and wanted to get an idea what focal length I mostly shoot at. Having various lenses at different point in time, the library indicates over 50% of my photos are taken using the original 24-70L alone. I have used it at weddings, family events, and for walk around. It has been a workhorse of a lens for me, and while one had to be lucky to get a good copy of it, I feel mine was not bad and am mostly happy with the images it gave me.

I am not looking to buy the MKII just yet, but if the contrast and sharpness (I dont care about corner sharpness but center to mid/outer frame should be sharp) is significantly improved over the original 24-70L at f2.8 then I might consider upgrading to the MKII (somewhere down the line).

I was wondering if others out there made the jump from the original 24-70L to the MKII, and noticed the improvements in real world situations, especially in terms of sharpness wide open at both ends.

Software & Accessories / Screw-on ND filter for 16-35 II
« on: April 25, 2013, 10:10:28 AM »
Anyone used this B+W 10-Stop ND filter on their 16-35 II? I am wondering how bad the vignetting will be if this filter is used (could not find a slim version from B+W) on the lens at 16mm focal length, stopped down to f8, f11, etc. The lens will be paired with a 5D3.

I would get the Lee's Big Stopper but the wait time is ridiculous. Saw some on eBay, and people there are selling the Big Stopper for $250 (2filter, BnH sells them for around $140).

Looking for suggestion on a ballhead with clamp and release plate setup for Canon 5D3. Thinking of a setup suited for portrait shooting and as well as landscape panoramas. I remember neuro and many others suggested the RRS BH-40. For the purposes mentioned (portraits, panorama), will the following gear suffice?

1.RRS BH-40 Ballhead with LR

2. RRS PCL-1 & MPR-CL II Panning clamp & nodal slide for eliminating parallax

3. RRS-L Plate for 5D3

If there are other alternate systems, would love to hear them. For tripod, any recommendations from RRS, Gitzo? I had the Manfrotto 055XPROB in mind. Max load will be a 5D3+70-200 f2.8, minimum 5D3+16-35 II.

Looking for a good 3rd party grip for the 5D3 that's close to Canon's offering in terms of build and handling.

Software & Accessories / Wonderpana System from Fotodiox
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:42:32 AM »
Anyone have any experience with the filter system from Fotodiox. I am looking for a system that can fit the Samyang (Rokinon) 14mm f2.8 or the T3.1 lens and this is the only product that fits this lens. Other option is the Hitech system from Lucroit. I have no idea if their (Fotodiox or Hitech's) ND and GND filters have any color cast issues. Any insight on this matter would be very helpful. Unfortunately, Lee filters dont work with this system yet (I think). :(

Canon General / Firmware update 1.1.3 for Canon 6D Released.

Gosh, any hint of 5D3 firmware update releasing sooner than later would be nice too. >_>

Lenses / Advice on a telephoto lens for street photography
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:14:09 PM »
If you were to use a telephoto lens (zoom/prime) that's not white in color for both day/night street photography which one would you go for and why?

I usually use the 24-70 for street photography now, but looking for a longer glass. These lenses come to mind, and I would love to hear your thought/opinion/suggestion.

1) 100mm f2.8L IS
2) 135mm f2L
3) 200mm f2.8L II

Edit: Will be used on the 5D3. And mainly for street/outdoor portrait, candid shots of people, street activities like parades, festivals, etc. I like to shoot wide open in most cases to get the background to melt away. Also, like to shoot at night as well.

Lenses / Samyang 14mm T3.1 for still photography?
« on: March 01, 2013, 10:45:54 AM »
Can you use the Samyang 14mm T.3.1 Cine lens for still photography? I understand this is designed for video and it's aperture ring is declicked for smoother transition of aperture size. Not sure if that should be a problem when taking photographs though. Anyone used this particular lens to for still photography (if that is even possible with this lens) ? If it works, how does it compare to its younger brother cousin Samyang 14mm f2.8.? I am using a 5D3. Thanks.
