Lenses / Fast lens for indoor use
« on: January 17, 2013, 08:42:27 AM »
Looking for a fast lens, mainly for indoor(with low light) use. It will be used in family events, indoor parties at night and its usage will range from single to group portraits. Most of the time I will have external flash attached. Right now I take my 24-70 f2.8L in such events but I am looking for something lightweight and fast. It will be paired with a 5d3 and at times 60d. Oh, I use the 50mm 1.8 II at times and it often hunts for focus in dim lighting conditions where the 24-70 snaps on to the target almost instantly. I am on the verge of selling the 50mm 1.8 II.

Thanks in advance.

I buy online and order what I planned to order when the price is right.

I usually buy in the shop my lenses. But, I got a good deal online, so first time order online. A bit of a gamble not being able to check the lens as you can do that when buying in the shop.

So today my 16-35 f/2.8 MK II arrived  :D

I also got a B+W slim filter for it. Weird experience with this slim filter (is a first too) The lenscap cannot be attached to protect the filter  ???
That's a first too. With my other regular B+W UV filters on other lenses this is not a problem.
Is this something common with slim filters?

The B+W XS Pro series are slim, plus it supports the lens cap. All my filters are XS Pro and the caps fit quite well for a ultra slim profile, never had any problems with it. You may want to get them for your UWA lens :)

Lenses / Re: Lens dilemma
« on: December 18, 2012, 08:45:14 PM »
I was exactly in the same dilemma just 2 days ago. I ended up buying a used 70-200 f2.8L off ebay last night. I was going back and forth between this lens and the 135. I use 60D and 5D3, often missed the reach (especially in 5D), as I only had Canon's 24-70, 50, and Tokina's 11-16, and figured 135-200 ish reach would compliment my style. So I am planning to use this for a while and if I don't like it I know I will sell it off somewhere down the line  and add cash to get the IS or 135.

Do you think the used market price for this lens will drop a bit more sooner than later or will the price remain the same for some time? I was just about to pull the trigger on one 70-200 f2.8L and the used market seems to be hovering around the 930-1050 ish price point right now.

Lenses / Re: Canon 80-200 f2.8L Image Quality
« on: December 10, 2012, 02:59:23 PM »
I had that lens "magic drain pipe" for some years.  It takes great pictures and has a wonderful bokeh.  There are no spare parts to be had anymore, so I sold it cheap when the rubber focusing ring disintegrated and things were going downhill.

How was the AF speed and accuracy?

Remember this lens? I was wondering how it fares against the current 70-200 f2.8L. Just curious about the image quality of this lens. Anyone had experience with this lens please chime in. I wish Canon made their teles black >_<

Canon General / Re: Remote Shutter Release for Canon 5D3
« on: December 09, 2012, 10:53:06 PM »
Awesome inputs as always. Looks like there are quite a few options. So far I am looking at these options

1) hähnel Giga T Pro II
2) Vello FreeWave Plus Wireless Remote Shutter Release
3) Yongnuo RC603C

I like the idea of being able to auto focus wireless-ly. For some timed interval shots the Giga seems to be the way to go. Correct me if I am wrong.

Looking for a good wireless shutter release remote that works with 5D3 and if possible with other EOS Bodies as well. Any advice is appreciated.

Lenses / Re: 17-40mm F/4 L or 16/35mm F/2.8 L I
« on: December 09, 2012, 02:50:06 AM »
I'm in a similar predicament.  coming from the 10-22 on a crop, I really liked 10mm.  My main concern isn't the extra stop of light as I will probably be shooting at f/5.6 to f/8 anyway.  I've read that in UWA lenses, 1 mm makes a big difference.  Is the difference between 16mm and 17mm significant?

Canon has a decent lens comparison tool so you can see the difference in focal lengths.  Give it a try, hope it helps. http://canonlenses.ca/Get-a-wider-perspective

I just recently went through the same decision process as well.  Bought a 5d3 about a week ago and was trying to decide on what UWA to get to replace my 10-22.  Decided on the 16-35 f2.8 II.  So far I couldn't be happier with my choice.

OMG, this is awesome. I am facing the same dilemma as AudioGlenn, this comparison tool is what I have had been looking for to confirm the 1mm difference between 17-40 and the 16-35!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!

This is encouraging, as far as it goes:

Thanks for sharing. Things look good so far. How long before you think Tamron might reduce the price or offer rebates for such a new lens. Just curious.
