EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: A positive feedback for 6D
« on: September 20, 2012, 04:17:59 AM »
Hmmm if, in real life, the autofocus works better than the 5D mkii and the image quality turns out to be at least as good if not better I might well start getting excited about this camera as a potential 60D upgrade!

EOS Bodies / Re: 6D or 5D Mk II
« on: September 19, 2012, 05:27:57 AM »
When was the last time a digital camera went up in price because it was discontinued, it's not a collectable, it will go down in price.
Not sure about bodies but the used price of the 24-70mm mk i seems to have risen since the release of the mk ii...

If the 6d af is at least "acceptable" and the 5d3 price continues to sink, I don't think the 5d2 will rise in price - though it might stick where it is now. The price 24-70 mk1 is ridiculously high atm, but imho that's just because the mk2 is not on the shelves in numbers and the used mk1 market is thinned by the long mk2 delay.

Lenses are a bit of a different beast too.  Since they remain relevant and useful regardless of the new technology put into the bodies.  Lenses are an investment, or at least as close as you can get to one in the technological product world.  I do think the used prices will fall though.  As stated - the old ones are discontinued and the new ones are just now out many months later.

A very solid point well made sir! (just bitter about the 24-70 mki slowly rising as it's possibly my next lens purchase once I go fulll frame!)  ;)

"What is your prediction regarding the used-price market for the 5DII? My guess is that if it's discontinued the price will go up and you'll likely pay more for it than the current new price."

I was holding out for the 6D announcemnt before deciding what to upgrade to from my 60D. I don't reckon I'll be in a position to afford a mkiii any time soon and unless the IQ and low light performance of the 6D proves to be amazing I'll be one of those driving the used price of the mkii up by jumping in with one of those.

I agree with the guys suggesting not to rent the really high end gear. If you're going to rent for an unpaid job rent something lower down the scale, anything APS-C will work great with your Sigma lens, think about 7D or 60D, both of which do fine up to about ISO 1600. Why spend a tonne of money on something you're not getting paid for??

Lenses / Re: Shooting low light event with 50 1.8II or 15-85
« on: September 12, 2012, 07:46:07 AM »
One thing, don't be afraid to push your ISO.  Sometimes, it's better to have grainy shots than have no shots at all.  You can also explore the world of B&W.  High ISO shots are more forgiving with B&W or Sepia.  The grain also gives the perfect "old" effect to your pictures.  Don't be limited by your camera.  +1 to a previous poster for creativity.  Saying that, use 50mm 1.8 if you can't or don't want to use flash or the focal length is just enough or use the 15-85 for those wide angle shots.  You have 2 great lenses and 1 great camera with you.  Just shoot. :)

+1 on the ISO point. My live music photography was really limited when I first started out becuase I was afraid of anything over 800. I too own the 60D and I'll happily take my ISO up to around 2000 before I start getting worried about shots being unusable. I always think a sharp grainy shot is better than an unusable blurry shot especially if you convert to black and white.

The other thing you could try is you're using your flash is slow sync. I normally set my flash to 2nd curtain so it flashes at the end of the exposure and my shutter speed to about 1/6 or slower. Takes a bit of trial and error but you can get some really interesting looking shots!

Canon General / Re: Europe trip, 1-2 months
« on: September 12, 2012, 06:32:22 AM »
If you're UK leg is only a couple of days, chances are you'll end up in London, if you want nature and wildlife e.t.c and don't want to stray too far from London Richmond Park early in the morning is good for deer/wildlife. If you're looking to go a bit further afield but not too far you should look at the Norfolk Broads, boat trips, scenerey and an impressive array of wildlife and less that 3 hours from the center of London.

If you're staying longer, definietly check out Scotland, Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in the world!

Video & Movie / Re: First video interview I've ever done
« on: September 10, 2012, 05:15:09 AM »
Awesome advice thanks guys, I was space limited to a certain extent but next time I'll look to get a cleaner separation between subject and background. Also looking back the angle irks me so I'd change that. As I said my next investment is a rode mic. Video is decidedly secondary to stills for me at the moment so I'm not gonna bury alot of  money into audio gear I'll rarely use but as a rode mic is about £80 I don't see why not (after payday!)

Thanks again for the advice!

Shot this with my Canon 60D, sound quality sucks (my next purchase is a Rode Mic!) wonder what people think!

While the 5D MK III is a excellent camera, I sent mine back.  The inability to see the AF points in dark rooms is a killer.  I can see the much larger 7D AF points, but not the 5D MK III.
5D MK II's were available for under $1600 over labor day, and I bought a 2nd one after returning my 5D MK III thru CLP for $1407.
If I catch one of the 5D MK III's that is through a authorized reseller for $2800, I'll probably go for it, but $3500 is too much.

How bad are the AF in the dark? As I mostly shoot live music and I'm pretty much in the same place as I've had my 60D for about 1.5 years and want something that's going to perform better at ISO 1600+. My dilemma is save longer and get a mkiii or get a mkii with a new lens but if you can't see the AF points in the dark I'm thinking I may as well get the mkii.

Lenses / Re: Help with efs 17-85
« on: August 30, 2012, 09:27:14 AM »
It probably depends if you were really happy with the 17-85 or if you were looking to upgrade anyways. If you were happy with the lens I say $150 is cheaper than buying a new lens for the sake of it.

If you were looking to replace it anyway then put the money towards a new lens, is there anything you can use in the meantime, nifty 50 etc?

The logical updgrades if you're sticking with a crop body are 15-85 or 17-55 f2.8 (which i use and is amazing) so if you're budget can't get to those I say repair the lens you've got  :)

I picked up the 70-200 not long ago for live music and occassional weddings. Haven't regretted it for one second, super sharp and versatile, love it. Rent it!
