Software & Accessories / How to use a non-collar lens on a gimbal
« on: September 29, 2014, 09:45:52 PM »
I'll leave it to the user to decide if this solves a problem or not, but an eBay duplex ARCA-Swiss clamp allows for this; there is still room to move the body down before it contacts the clamp for a collar too.

In the first image it looks like the duplex clamp hangs on by a thread but it in fact has contact over most of its length, and there is room to move it down as well.

The second shows room past a big lens, and I didn't have to move anything.

So if you have one great tripod and a gimbal, there is a least one way to attach a body to it.

Anyone?  I'm after the 400x 16GB pro SD cards particularly, fifty or so of them.

Regional Boards / Lens rentals in western Belgium?

Anyone know a place?  I'd prefer a Schneider 2.8/50 PC but a Canon 24 TS is probably useable.

So further to my plan to invade Europe I had a look for a charger I could lash to the back of a backpack; I've seen a couple which will put out 12V which is enough to run a travel charger for an LP-E6, all fine and dandy.

My question is:  Has anyone actually done this?  Is it worth the bother?  I don't mean for it to be my only means of charging batteries, but to lessen my need to find an outlet as much.

Hi, I don't know if this is news or not but some threads have been inaccessible; the 200-400 thread in the lens gallery is the latest one.  I posted a photo and then Eldar posted something, but now clicking on it only brings up an empty page.  Any suggestions?  Anything I can do to help?

Canon General / CPS Canada - No (more?) welcome package?
« on: August 17, 2014, 10:21:34 PM »
Anyone else here a member?  I mailed away a money order (how quaint) and received a membership card in the mail; is that the norm?  I ask on account of people joining and getting some interesting stuff for their trouble.

Lighting / 600EX-RT - invalid dead battery indication & fix
« on: August 11, 2014, 03:59:46 PM »
One of my lights came up the other day with a dead battery indication; I thought nothing of it because it had been in a bag in my car unattended for a week or so.  The indication persisted after charging the batteries, and after replacing them with known-good ones.

What worked as a fix was to connect an external battery pack and turn the flash on; after that it turns on normally without the external battery.  I don't know what causes this, but that has been the fix.  I'll report back if it happens again.

Photography Technique / Getting photos home from overseas
« on: July 26, 2014, 02:08:11 AM »
I have a plan coming together for a 50+ day trip to Europe.  Any real-world experience on getting 16GB across the pond daily in a reliable manner?

My initial conditions are no wish to use an online storage medium and no wish to keep the only copies with me physically.  Also if I can leave my laptop at home and run on my Asus tablet so much the better; I intend to carry what I need rather than drag literal baggage all over.  Finally this is quite likely a once in a lifetime trip, two years worth of vacation time, etc etc so I won't complain about spending a little.

My plan is to write to both cards (in a 1Dx), save everything on a pair of TB-class external drives and then mail  USB sticks home separately more or less daily.  16GB thumbies appear to be affordable on the basis of one pair per day, and I can sell most of them when I get home anyway.

I'm all ears - the flight doesn't leave any time soon.

Lenses / 52mm drop in polarizers - interchangeable?
« on: July 06, 2014, 02:55:05 AM »
Hi, anyone know if this one and this one interchange?  The (more or less) local place has the lens I want and the other filter, and as much as the obvious answer is no if they're simply a different colour then I'm not going to fuss.

Software & Accessories / LR 5.5 - Rotated watermarks disappear?
« on: June 20, 2014, 10:06:47 PM »
I thought to rotate the watermark for some photos I was going to export, but after rotating it once it disappeared and no end of screwing with settings could make it appear.  Has anyone else had this?

Adobe would do very well indeed to put some work into that particular part of the program.   >:(

I'm surprised there isn't a thread for it here already so here we go.  I traded my (earlier) Sigma 50 f/1.4 for one of these today and for what it cost me I'm impressed.  I know it isn't the 100L I want to get later but it will certainly hold me while I spend the difference on a few more pressing things.  Anyone else have one?

As an aside sRGB was not kind to the attached image, but this post comes to you from my tablet while I do some work on my desktop.

Software & Accessories / External AF assist light?
« on: April 06, 2014, 10:38:10 PM »
There I was shooting bullriding in a cave-dark arena yesterday, and occasionally I had trouble getting AF lock on a 1Dx with a 70-200 f/2.8L II.  Lo and behold Thinkgeek has flashlight-size IR lights for sale, would one of those be any use out to about 100 feet?  I might shop around for something which runs on AAs and has provision for a remote switch, but only if the idea is sound.

Canon General / Image Square Calgary - 200-400 on hand!
« on: March 25, 2014, 11:47:11 PM »
Hi, anyone know if they have one there?  I was there last (?) summer and they didn't then, but if they do now it'd be worth extending a trip which will get me close.
