Canon General / Re: Out of Focus Photos!!!
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:37:33 PM »
There is one shot where my daughter was standing and holding something in front and to the side. I focused on her face but the the thing she was holding was more in focus than her face.  It was sunny out and, what I would assume to be, in ideal conditions.

What focus mode were you using in that situation? Single, AF Expansion, Zone, Auto, etc?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D III, or 6D+7D combo - your thoughts?
« on: October 12, 2012, 09:21:33 PM »
After I got my 5D3 I have not used my 7D much, just a couple or so shots here and there, and I just like to handle the 7D when I'm bored.

I don't know, but I'm one of those folks who got amazed with FF after years of APS-C (I came from 35mm film as well, so I'm very much used to the FF Field of View). I know the 5D3 is the camera that will serve me well for many years.

The reason why I didn't settle for the 5D2 is because I was spoiled by the 7D's functionality and responsiveness. But if I was handed a 5D2 for free I'd love to have it  ;D

I still don't want to let go of the 7D though, having two cameras can be useful. I don't feel having a 5D3 and 7D as redundant. Knowing I still have the 7D around if I need it feels reassuring.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Considering switching to Nikon
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:30:11 PM »
I'm already comfortable with the Canon system, and while I would like to learn how to operate Nikon cameras, getting rid of all my Canon stuff just because I perceive Nikon as having better MP's, etc, is counter intuitive. Same as for people who want to switch to Canon. Know your weapon :-)

My only problem with the Black Rapid RS7 is when I have a battery grip on - the tripod mount screw is uncomfortable against my palm when I take portrait shots, which negates the benefits of the grip. But with the camera without the grip on,the RS7 is great to use.

Lenses / Re: 24-70 II or 70-200 II
« on: October 04, 2012, 10:40:02 PM »
I have the same "problem" like the OP. What other lenses do you have?

16-35 II, 24-70 II, and the 70-200 II will cover most of people's needs. But dang, money don't grow on trees.

Lenses / Re: Sharpest Ultra-wide Lens for Full Frame

I read somewhere in the net that the 16-35mm II gets soft from 24-35mm, but I don't know if that's just the writer's perception of the lens. Better to research even more. If true, what this means is use the lens to make most out of the 16-23mm focal length and leave anything longer to the 24-70 or 24-105.

Lenses / Re: What 3 lenses do you dream of and long to own?
« on: September 27, 2012, 12:09:06 PM »
My dream:
- 70-200mm f/2.8 MKii IS
- 24-70mm f/2.8 MKii
- 85mm f/1.2

We're about the same.  :) plus a UWA 16-35 II 2.8

Except that I can only probably afford the 70-200 2.8 II a year after settling for just an 85 1.8 (non L) next month.

EOS Bodies / Re: Best FF option
« on: September 22, 2012, 04:14:05 PM »
Coming from a 7d, you will only be happy with a 5d III. The 5DII and 6D offer better IQ, but you will miss the advanced AF and handling of the 7d. The 5d III is the best of both worlds. The extra megapixels of the 5dIII will let you crop a bit more so you won't miss the reach of the 7d as much as you think.

I agree - I came from a 7D and more than likely you will be happy with the 5D3.  I usually have buyer's remorse when purchasing an expensive item, but that didn't happen with the 5D3 (but that's just me). Once spoiled by the 7D, the harder it is to look for one like it within the Canon range. Transitioning to the 5D3 was not difficult because it is more like using the 7D (except for the 8 fps - but hey, that's why I still hold on to my 7D).

EOS Bodies / Re: Budget camera body choice
« on: September 21, 2012, 04:28:57 PM »
I'm agreeable with going Rebel for now, because I'm sure it won't hurt as bad as when you finally will outgrow the 60D and want something better. However if I were to choose, there is a big difference between the pentaprism of the 60D (larger, brighter, clearer) and the pentamirror viewfinder of the Rebels (smaller, less framing accuracy) so it's not only all about the sensor. That was a big influence for my choice of DSLR, including my late father's old mantra to buy the best in a product line-up that you can afford (up to 2nd best).

I am loving the 5D3 everyday since I bought it. In my view it delivers more than I expected it would. I usually get buyer's remorse for expensive stuff - but I never had that with the 5D3 with the grip. Is there any reason why you think the 5D3 "did not deliver"?

I would still be happy with the 6D if I bought it - it would be like my already sold 60D but with full frame and two more AF points (I miss that camera!)  The 60D is "just" APS-C, but it still delivered great performance for me when I had it, but having a full-frame now upped my standards (though I can still get very satisfactory images with the 60D). Heck, I'm still happy with my 7D, Rebel 2000, and AV-1.

My point is, please don't get hung up on specs - get yourself a decent camera - be it Nikon/Canon/Fuji/Sony, learn its strengths and weaknesses, and enjoy shooting with it.  :)

Lenses / Re: Which to get next: 35 f/1.4L or 16-35 f/2.8L...?
« on: September 20, 2012, 12:08:56 PM »
Canon23: I suggest the 16-35 II, it will allow you more creativity with some shots (more wide view of the interior the church, tight group pictures - albeit distorted, etc.).

Try to find out if the notion that the 16-35II gets soft within 24-35mm is true... I had the lens before but returned it due to financial reasons, so I had not really tried the longer end much.

I am more like you at the start of my lens collection - I'm looking ahead between the 70-200mm II and the new 24-70 II, but since I have the 50mm 1.8 II I'm more likely leaning towards the telephoto range than standard or ultra wide.

Lenses / Re: What to do?
« on: September 18, 2012, 04:26:16 PM »
If I had $2500 I'd just go for the 24-70 II. You probably need that over the 24-105 unless you don't want to change lenses often between 24-70 and 70-200, and don't mind losing one stop of light (and more bokeh). While I love the 24-105 for a walkaround, I'm missing a lot on bokeh when I need to do a certain effect but that's just me.

My problem is what to get after my 24-105: the 24-70 II or 70-200 II.  :-\

I got a friend who uses a 60D and is very excited to go full frame with a new camera coming, which incidentally is called a 6D. I guess the CEO doesn't need to resign at all.  ;D

I have no regrets buying the 5DM3 a month ago - I have been loving the camera more everytime I use it. Sure the $750 could have bought me an iPad. I have taken lots of high ISO pics that could have not been done satisfactorally with the 7D, and each time I review those pics they bring a huge smile on my face.

I am happy for the other folks who took advantage of the one-day bargain.

Lenses / Re: If you can have ONLY 3 lenses, what would they...???
« on: September 16, 2012, 03:53:49 PM »
My dream kit:

16-35mm f/2.8 II USM
24-70mm f/2.8 II USM
70-200mm f/2.8 II IS USM

All the expensive stuff. Yet I only have a 24-105mm f/4 IS USM and a 50mm f/1.8 II for now. Quite a long ways to go.
