I missed out on the first day the referbished ones went down to $380. I check everyday since and havent seen any in stock. I even try to see what time they stock other items. I see that they replenish around 9:00 am pst. But that's just a guess.

Hope they stock them soon cause I would like to score one at a good price.

Lenses / Re: Standard Lens for Paris and London holiday.
« on: May 16, 2013, 09:56:49 PM »
I was in Paris in December, brought one lens with me and that was the 24-105. The weight was excellent, good zoom range. But the only problem I had, it was very dark and cloudy when I went. I wish I had the 2.8 lens to get more light. I found that the 24-105 worked well with good light or flash. Also a contributing factor was my camera iso capabilities were not that great. But I made do.

From reading a lot of reviews of the 24-70II, I would get it, its something that will be with you a longtime with no regrets in a general zoom lens. Only the price will hurt at the moment, but when you see those pictures, you will hopefully say it was worth it.

At this moment, I'm saving up for the 24-70II.

Here is one with the 24-105:

Lenses / Re: Do you still love 24-105L?

I was so happy to replace my old sigma 24-70 (2003 model, heavy as a 6 pack of beer) with the canon 24-105. The 24-105 was lighter to carry everywhere. But now the picture quality is not what I'm looking for. After years with it, I found its not as sharp as it can be. It works really well when I'm outside with good light. Not as well indoors without flash.

Now I'm saving for the 24-70 2.8 for replacement and will sell the 24-105.

Lenses / Re: IS mandatory? 70-200 f/4 IS vs. f/2.8 Non-IS
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:51:26 AM »
Thanks Paul13walnut! I always wondered about that. I thought you had to shoot at 2.8 all the time.

No.

From the mid sixties most SLR cameras have had full aperture TTL metering.

That is the iris stops down to shooting aperture at exposure, it remains open before exposure to keep the viewfinder bright for focusing.  Meter coupling, and these days electronic interfaces, tell the meter how much to compensate the reading for.

So if you have an f2.8 or faster lens, the af is performed at f2.8 or faster, even if you shoot at f8 all the time.

Plus with the 2.8, you get to utilize the High precision af center point on the 6d.
That is if you shoot wide open all the time?

Lenses / Re: New or Refurbished Lens?
« on: March 31, 2013, 04:16:10 PM »
I purchased a refurbished 24-105 through canon last year. It came with a lens cap, pouch, cd, in a large white box secured in thick molded foam for protection.

I had no problems, but I think it comes with only 90 days warranty.

When I looked today, I was hoping that the 24-70 II would suddenly show up. Wishful thinking.  :P

Lenses / Re: 24-70 f2.8L II or.....
« on: March 28, 2013, 12:08:38 PM »
I have been reading a lot about the canon 24-70 ii, some reviewers say that it's close to primes in that focal range in sharpness.

I have the 24-105 and think its a little soft for my taste. I want a faster lens cause I shoot in low light often. Having that option of 2.8 can make a diffrence for me since I shoot around 70mm and under.

EOS Bodies / Re: 6D Autofocus not impressive
« on: March 26, 2013, 05:26:38 PM »
Since we all know that the 6d's AF points are not it's strong point (center point is pretty good in my opinion). Is there a way to maximize the AF with settings or tips?

Few things I tried to get a good understanding of the 6d AF and have more keepers.
• I try to make sure that I am focusing on a contrast part of the subject for less error in focusing.
• I have been trying that AF-on button with my thumb while shooting, there is a thread on the technique.
• When on AI Servo, I wait a second and make sure its locked on before taking the shots.

I'm getting better and learning the 6d AF.

Anyone else have any tips?
How about the AF adjustments when tracking a subject, etc?

Lighting / Re: First external flash? Lots of beginner's questions!

That black foamy thing is interesting. I would have gotten that if I didn't have a flashbender.

Do read his site for more info on flash photography and that black foamy thing, very informative.

After having the 430ex II for a year, making a lot of mistakes and figuring out why, it made my lighting skills stronger by understand the basics of flash photography in ettl or manual settings.

Now I'm eager to expand my knowledge, confidence and go further with multiple, wireless stronger flash guns such as the 600s or even moonlights to achieve what I'm looking for.

I strongly suggest getting a good flash that works well with your camera and go out and have fun. Then you can delve into third party equipment or upgrade to a better flash later in time.

Canon General / Re: tips for Barcelona?

When I went, it was late November. I wish I had the 6D then, but I was using my 10d with 24-105 and still got some great stuff. If you like architecture, take the tour up top of the Sagrada familia. You can take shots of the whole city from up top when going through the tour. Its really neat! Also for street performers and people, go to Los romblas. Or look for that penis looking building. Try all the food you can and go crazy shooting stuff cause its filled with people and neat street culture.

Here some shots that I took from a few months ago.
At top of Sagrada Familia.

Down at Los romblas.
