Business of Photography/Videography / What your go kit?
« on: January 16, 2015, 04:02:28 PM »
i am going on another out of the country trip and I have yet to figure out how to really pack and what to take on board the plane as my ready to go kit. I have two pelican cases full of equipment that flys below. Photo/video equip.
The point of the trip is journalistic documentation about a certain group to raise awareness. Is it best to pick a zoom like 16-35 and one body and the rest below or is it worth it to carry more lenses on board?
Each time I travel my carry on list gets shorter and shorter.
This time I am thinking small body, 16-35, go pro.
Also the country is Nicaragua if any knows any local customs or traditions I should be sensitive to.
I would to do something very much like what user mesodan did in his post about his trip to Afghanistan.

Business of Photography/Videography / Concert Photo Copyright
« on: September 13, 2014, 10:41:40 AM »
I have a question and after searching the web forever I have gotten closer to an answer but need some direct insight.
I was hired by a production company to shoot a concert for the Eli Young Band and their openers. There was no photography contract between the production company and the bands. The purpose of the photos is to promote what the production company can do by way of timel apse and general concert photos(wid/tele).
I am under the impression that I would own the photos unless my contract with the production company dictated they were the owners of the photos(it didnt).
We(the prod. company and I) are getting ready to post the photos online but we are concerned the band may say they own those rights. While this sounds crazy there are many cases of this happening in the past.
Amist all the hustle, bustle and whining about how great the 7d2 should have been or will be if anyone can give me some insight it would be awesome.

Lenses / a 70-200mm not focussing.
« on: May 19, 2014, 02:41:24 PM »
I went to yellowstone this past week and half way through the trip my 70-200mm 2.8 ii would stop focussing on the wide end. Tried it on two bodies same thing. I noticed after inspection the back screws on the lenses are coming out. I screwed them back in and within an day they were coming back out. Also if I focus it while zoomed at 200mm and pull focus back to 70 it will go in and out of focus. I don't remember it ever doing this. Can anyone else check their 70-200mm?
I have a warranty but if it gets fixed instead of replaced I just would like to know what to check and what the potential problems could be?
Thank you for anyone who has any ideas.

Software & Accessories / Photo head on video sticks
« on: May 09, 2014, 11:59:55 PM »
I purchased a great video tripod head and legs by satchler. I purposely paid not for the carbon fiber legs and would like to be able to use them for photo as well. The legs accept a 100mm bowl and as far as I can tell no photo heads will bowl mount. Does anyone know of an adapter? I tried googling but I don't think I am using the right search terms. I am going to Yellowstone and would love to get something but I am afraid it may be too late to order something. Any help is appreciated.

Lenses / 24-105 vs 24-70 2.8 ii
« on: March 26, 2014, 01:25:45 AM »
I have had the 24-105 for about 2 years now. I have never been pleased with the quality which is somewhat contradictory to what the general consensus is on this lens.
I recently just purchased the BH deal for the 24-70, and have been eagerly looking forward to this lens. Reviews have been showing this lens to resolve a great amount of detail.
At 1/200 f/4 100 i can get nearly identical results from these two lens. Now it is no where near what pro are testing with but i used tripod, multiple shots picked the sharpest from each lens, and had flash to provide pretty consistent lighting.
Does anyone have these two lens? or also make the upgrade? what are your thoughts?
I will say the color and in camera rendering on the 24-70 is amazing. i love that but worth $1800? i dont feel like its worth is at this point. To be honest i love my two other 2.8 zooms lens but i dont feel like this one stacks up the same.
after looking over the picture samples on the digital picture (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=355&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=787&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2) it seems as though i am only looking at the center and the really "upgrade" of this lens will be at the edges.

Third Party Manufacturers / A7R Lust
« on: March 11, 2014, 06:56:38 PM »
BH has a promo going on to get a new a7r $300 off when you give them any camera. I have an old point and shoot sitting around, and they will give me the money for it. Also the 55/1.8  is dropped down to 798.
I could get a hi MP camera for a pretty darn good deal, for street and portrait photos. This is super tempting. I have been waiting for a 7d2 to switch from cr1 to cr2/3. Hoping it would be a high megapixel camera. I know some people hate the high megapixels but i would love it! I am super tempted by this a great all around carry camera. I would never leave my 5d's at home for any paid video/photo event. But for all that other stuff? travel? street? fun? it would be so nice to have this.
Any advice on waiting for a hiMP canon(even if it was large body i would still stick with canon)?
From what i understand this zeiss 55 is sharp as it gets and pairs beautifully with this body.
also side note i have thought about waiting for the 501.4 art to come out in ef mount.(but this is no means  a small setup with a 5d.

by the way asked my wife for advice- she related it to the boots she just got, so i turn to CR.

Business of Photography/Videography / Help needed! Photography job!
« on: March 03, 2014, 10:03:23 PM »
I am signed up to do a event. It will be a benefit banquet for a boys home. They would like to have a cowboy themed photo booth. The only issue is they want to have me be able to print the pictures instantly. Seems like they would be willing to cover the cost of me buying a printer. I normally just print at my local print shop. I don't really have a lot of experience with instant print type of setup. Should I buy one? Which one? Or should I try to do the print and mailing later? I 8x10 can't be that much to mail. Please help me figure this out!

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / The unbreakable is broken.
« on: December 28, 2013, 01:46:24 AM »
So finally payed up and bought a few pelican cases. 1540 I think and the 1740. Sadly the 1740 got shipped to me cracked! I am blown away! I thought this was the unbreakable box. Super nervous now. The cracking happened when there was nothing in it and the cardboard shipping box had very little to no damage on it. Bought this so I can ship my stuff to Jamaica to do a job. Now wondering if I should switch! Any one had this happen to them ? Should I stay with pelican?

Lighting / 600ex as main lights
« on: August 15, 2013, 09:44:58 AM »
I have one 600ex and i am seriously considering getting another plus the st-e3. This would be used mainly for event photography and some portraits. Wedding parties etc. Are these bright enough to be used for the formal portraits and adding ambient light at a wedding? I feel like they are pretty powerful but every review i see they are using three on each light stand. I dont have 2500 to use on new speedlights.
I looking at getting stands and maybe using the gary fong for both since they are simple diffuser that works well. I know it wont be the same as having studio strobes but i also dont want to haul those around and have to set them up each time...
Any one have this type of setup?

Lighting / Emergency help-wedding tomorrow
« on: May 17, 2013, 02:45:12 AM »
I have been having a problem with my flash for a while. But i dont think it is with my flash i believe it with the user.
I have a 600ex and a 5dm3 and 5dm2.
Whenever typically for a wedding since the shots are moving fast and i do not have time to continually adjust stuff i put my cam on av and my flash on ettl.
with my 5d2 it works out just fine.
with my m3 tho it always seems to be off. like the flash all the suddent becomes under powered and isnt bounce flashing correctly(typically pointed up with gary fong)
whenever i change one setting it doenst seem to effect anything-i understand because it is in av and ettl both semi-automatic modes changing something means the camera will compensate for it.
but ill change flash to +1 to add more to it and it does nothing. ill change it to -2 no noticeable difference in image quality.
it makes me almost want to use my m2 more! so frustrating. it has been going on for a while now and i cannot seem to figure it out.
could it be a metering mode? did they change the way the m3 works with flash? is it a new ettl? please help with any ideas as i have a wedding tomorrow and this has been driving me mad.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Street Photography Advice... now with Eos-M
« on: April 26, 2013, 10:30:31 AM »
I have a 14 day trip to indonesia at the end of the summer. I love street photography and would like that to be a huge part of the trip while i am there.
I currently have a canon 5d III, 5d II, 24-105,70-2002.8 ii, 85 1.8, 50 1.8, 16-35 ii, 100mm 2.8.
I also have the canon AE-1 and a 50mm 1.8.
I feel like having the AE-1 has changed the way i look at street photography.
Its such an easier smaller form.
So i have been looking at a few options as i dont want to take this full list of lenses to Indonesia.
1-Fuji Film X100s-fast focusing(sorta), small form, good focal length-fixed lens
2-Sigma 35 F/1.4 incredible sharp(apparently), works with 5d iii
3-renting a leica for that time period and see if that is the way i want to go

I shoot in such a photojournalistic style at what ever i do(event, wedding, street, portraits) i want to make sure the equipment i have fits that agenda.
I have been hoping forever that canon would come out with some digital randefinder but unless this new EOS M rumors comes true and is out of character for canon i am still back to these 3 options as far as i can tell...Thanks in advance for all your help.

Third Party Manufacturers / 35mm 1.4
« on: February 26, 2013, 08:45:11 AM »
I am currently missing a large aperture lens. I am really looking for one for portraits And wedding/event environments. I looked at the sigma compared to the canon and it is way better based of the digital picture ISO 12800. Also there is the 35mm f2 is that looks pretty amazing but I first want to know if there is a huge difference between 1.4 And 2 at 35mm. If not that huge the is on the f2 would be amazing for video for me.
I have wanted a 50mm for a while but am just waiting because I would like to see a new one. The 50mm 1.2 and 1.4 is so close in quality but I would like to buy a sealed lens that isn't one I am going to want to upgrade Down the road.

Is a 35mm tight enough that the background stays blurred? Or would waiting for a upgraded 50 be better?

Lighting / How to use flash with av,tv
« on: February 10, 2013, 01:51:11 AM »
I have a question that has been plaguing me for quite some time. I have searches every where but apparently I am not typing in the right search terms.
Whenever I have a flash on either 5d2/3 and it is in av,tv mode I feel as though the camera is not compensating for the flash. IE instead of an appropriate exposure of 1/60 it will be at 1" as though I didn't even have a flash on there. I felt as though it did this on my 60d when I still had it. By my 5d2 didn't. I assumed it was like the ISO 400 thing and would be fixed on 5d3.
However after using the 600exrt and 5d3 tonight it seems much more likely user error.
Please can someone explain this and possible some other flash thing like why it goes to ISo 400 ??
Or tell me where to look or how to play and figure it out.
This forum is so useful to me in learning the functions of some of the more technical sides of cameras.

Software & Accessories / Lightroom and SDXC
« on: February 09, 2013, 06:39:54 PM »
My lightroom has been giving me problems ever since i purchased an sdxc and my 5dmarkiii. I dont believe its my mark3 since it works great with other memory cards.
If i use a USB to Camera it goes sometimes extremely fast or it will say there is an error with each file.
I i plug it directly in to the computer(macbook sdxc slot) it will go EXTREMELY slow or not at all.
Sometimes Finder even takes forever to find it. So i am trying to see if anyone else is having any problems with their memory cards and connection to lightroom to narrow down what my issue is.
The memory card i have is "PNY pro-elite x 128gb 45mb/s"
the version of lightroom is 4.3.
Thanks for any input as i am about to throw this thing out the window..

Lenses / Lens recommendations for wildlife
« on: January 29, 2013, 08:52:29 AM »
I am look at a longer lens for wildlife  and I need help picking out a lens.
Here I the options I see so far
1-70-200 already have but if I add an extender
3-400 5.6.

I don't know if I would miss the extra versatility of the 100-400 over the 400 5.6. And I am hesitant of a extender setup because I have heard image quality can be pretty bad.
I mostly looking at elk, deer, foxes from a pretty good distance.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
