Business of Photography/Videography / Re: Concert Photo Copyright

Thank you guys. That was all great info. I live in the USA.
I believe that if we posted the photos online with any recognizable band member or their banner hanging in the background I could use it.
Its good to know that I have the rights to the photos tho.
I think for future reference I will get the production company to get the bands to sign off on using the pictures on their website. This band is pretty big and would have no reason to want what photos I took unless I happened to get that 1 in million.
thanks. this is why i like this forum, its like my own circle of good smart photo buddies.

EOS Bodies / Re: A Surprise Cinema EOS Announcement for Photokina? [CR1]

There are always post about what percentage of the market will buy a product and that determines how much a company will invest in these products. So it just stands to reason that lower end items will determine the flow of products and provide capital for the higher end product.
Sony and Panasonic have started to release some amazing and powerful low end products. Between the A7r for high megapixel small camera to the a7s at 4k or the gh4, these cameras are being bought at a large quantity. They are providing something powerful in a form and a price point previously thought out of reach. This used to be a canon mantra.
This new Sony FS7 is even another stab up the ladder for sony. I havent even heard of it until this post. These are amazing specs for a $8000 camera. This is something I would get jobs for and with specifically because it has specs that are not currently in my low end price range.
The c300 and c500 have become some peoples favorite cameras. They do a job and they do it well and accurately.
But for the majority of single shooters an 8000 dollars camera that can shoot 4k and slow motion in a good codec and take ef mount? That is powerful tool that is available.

I have a question and after searching the web forever I have gotten closer to an answer but need some direct insight.
I was hired by a production company to shoot a concert for the Eli Young Band and their openers. There was no photography contract between the production company and the bands. The purpose of the photos is to promote what the production company can do by way of timel apse and general concert photos(wid/tele).
I am under the impression that I would own the photos unless my contract with the production company dictated they were the owners of the photos(it didnt).
We(the prod. company and I) are getting ready to post the photos online but we are concerned the band may say they own those rights. While this sounds crazy there are many cases of this happening in the past.
Amist all the hustle, bustle and whining about how great the 7d2 should have been or will be if anyone can give me some insight it would be awesome.

From the photographer part of my job- the 7d2 sounds pretty awesome! I honestly never expected this camera to be the high megapixel one. So 20 megapixels at 10fps with good ISO sound like a great deal to me. I am excited and may buy it!

From the videographer part of my job- seriously? We need 4k in not a 10000$ body. I think canon was caught off guard by the gh4 and a7s. For anyone who says that they don't want to cut in on their 1dc sales is not thinking. If that were the case then a 60d wouldn't have 18 megapixels like the 1dx. Thre are other features- base ISO, recording codec, fps , etc.

This may make me buy something that has 4k on it from another brand as long as I can use ef mount. I am hoping to be  surprised by this anncouncement and get 4k. But I am also not just sitting at my computer refreshing canons news page.

EOS Bodies / Re: Are These The EOS 7D Mark II Specifications?

Really not that impressed. I am tired of these smaller resolutions. I would like to see something that's truly a game changer. Basically this is a field ready 70d that more toned on the focus and fps side.  Ugh. If these are true this probably won't be in my future. For what I do a 70d is the same thing.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D3 No Longer in Production

Hey used to work at that which shall not be mentioned for far to long. Those numbers in that app were always a bit of a mystery who and how they got there. And while discontinue dates couldn't be trusted as a frugal the start dates could. This is why items like wii and xbox 360 would be given these random model numbers. That way it was hard to find for nosey employees wanting release dates. Discontinue dates was more so we new just when we stopped carrying it after the fact. Sometimes it would even say we still carried old tech that wAs not true. Long story short don't make your peanut utter and jelly on this bread.

I can recommend this camera. I have multiple of them in both the 3black and the 3+ black. They work great. They are good for being able to fit just about anywhere and i would say always shoot in 2.5k if you dont need slow motion stuff.
As for photos i find it really is only good for timelapse. Just as a straight single photo i have never been impressed. It works but i would much rather use a dslr.

Make sure you dig down into the menus and get all the pro options turned on. Makes  a big difference especially on the 3+

I am sorry but 4k is not a gimic. 4k is great for image stabilization and getting a far better downsampled 1080p image. I believe that 4k will be released into a smaller camera-ie below the 1dc. I am not saying there wont be a compromise but i dont think they can wait forever to release the 4k into a smaller camera body.
I could see 4k in a 5d body and 2.5k in a smaller (7d) body.

Yeah i was watching the press box about as much as the game, always looking for a sign of a 7d. As far as the game Croatia deserved the win based on their play. Got a little rough and ugly at times but that was both sides. Seems like the ref may not get another game just because of that one call in the penalty box.

I have also just watched the opening match between Brazil & Croatia, and for the duration of the match I have seen several times a non-gripped body attached to a Canon long white supertele, there appears to be several photographers with that setup scattered around the stadium. That is mildly interesting to me since I am used to seeing mostly 1-series bodies or (less commonly) the equivalent Nikon ones being used for matches at this level. I really don't think pros sent by wire agencies, big international newspapers and magazines to cover this event would be using 5D3s or, worse, 7Ds. At the very least they should be using a grip for better balance while using those superteles on these smaller bodies, if that's what they have to use, which I doubt.

OT: As for the match itself, I think that Jap referee erred in giving that very soft penalty that led to the 2nd Brazilian goal, that Brazilian player was already falling down even before he got a mild touch from the opposing Croat player. Ruined the game for me. I must say Brazil was unimpressive, I really expect better from the hosts and one of the favorites. They don't seem to be good at keeping possession or defense. I think they would get exposed by a better attacking team than Croatia. Croatia played better than I expected, I actually wanted them to win or at least get a draw, they deserved that at least.

Talked to yesterday and my order will finally shipping. they should be getting in enough lenses to fulfill all mid april orders per the BH dude. My order on BH just changed to in stock order sent to warehouse. Going to let them go ahead and send it. If its massively impressive ill be keeping it for sure...

If I were you, I would be more concerned with all the ISO noise in the image!  LOL!  :P
HAha yeah that when i am using the "best camera in the world- Iphone." -my wife.

Lenses / Re: 24-105 vs 24-70 2.8 ii
« on: May 21, 2014, 09:27:09 PM »
Hmm That was an interesting read on the lensrentals blog. I wish i could just send them my lens! Ill have to contact canon about sending this lens to them, the biggest worry there is that it will come back with a "within Specs" ugh.
Although I would love to have the best 24-70 and never question it, i feel i can make better use of the 1800 dollars. And i already have with a polarizer and nd filter. And a preorder sigma but still no answer on that.

My Bh order is now saying on order? is that what it has always said? i think it used to say pre order...i ordered 4/12

Software & Accessories / Re: Photo head on video sticks

I waited to long. I just took an old tripod and made it work. Those are exactly what I was looking for. I will have to do some research and find a good quality one and then a photo head as well. I am glad to find out I can use those expensive legs for more than just one person.
