Software & Accessories / Re: New Macpro teased at Mac Conference

Interesting design, but it's a workstation - and if there was ever a use-application where the size of the box was not a primary concern, it's workstations.  All those custom parts means you can pretty much forget expandability.  No displayport or DVI, so you are pretty much limited to thunderbolt displays (or HDMI).  Performance sounds pretty great for the size.  Built-in bluetooth 4.0 and ac wifi is nice.  What'll it cost?  I assume unreasonable amounts of money.

They have usb3 and thunderbolt for expansion.

You can connect (mini) displayport through the thunderbolt ports. You can also convert thunderbolt to dvi, vga, hdmi, firewire 400/800, ethernet, usb2/3 etc. with a $29 dongle. You can also daisy chain thunderbolt devices. As far as expandability goes, everything will be external. You'll just need to plunk down $10,000 or whatever the hell it will cost to max out everything from the getgo.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: ND filters for video? Suggestions?
« on: April 15, 2013, 07:45:09 PM »
I can confirm the X as you approach max with the Lightcraft Workshop variable ND. My variable ND also has a dark spot on the top right corner of the frame which may not be present in all, but that problem isn't the only problem I have with the variable ND. My recommendation is to just buy a set of fixed at the largest filter size and then use some step up rings for your other lenses.

EOS Bodies / Re: New Rebel T4i vs 60d/7D
« on: January 18, 2013, 11:28:15 AM »
I own a T4i, a 5D Mark III and I used to own a T3i. The T3i was my first camera and I owned it for about 6 months before I upgraded, but I was a very quick study. Going from a T3i to a T4i, I was very annoyed with the new touch controls. I felt like I was in less control of what I was doing.

I know you said you were an amateur amateur, but if you know how to use your XSi comfortably then I think the T4i would be a step backwards. While you can still control the T4i the same exact way as the T3i, the T4i does have more automatic functions that take you of the driver seat. If you want that, then by all means, get the T4i. If you feel like you have a comfortable command over your XSi and can shoot manual from time to time, the T4i will just be like an annoying backseat driver.

Lenses / Re: Canon 24-70mm F4 IS - anybody bought one yet ?
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:24:12 PM »
I'm also interested. I just bought a 24-105mm and this lens was in the running, so I kind of need to read some negative reviews so I don't get buyer's remorse  ;D

Lenses / Re: New Lens Purchase Dilemma

The 40mm f2.8 lens is not an inspiring lens in any way. The only feature its got going for it is the STM. I would purchase a copy of LR4 over getting the 40mm pancake.

Lenses / Re: Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 or Canon 24-105 f/4
« on: December 21, 2012, 05:12:02 PM »
I am in the exact same situation as you. I have a 5Dm3 and I'm considering those two options. I keep teetering back and forth and I have decided that (when I have money) I will get the 24-105mm IS.

There's just a couple things that made my decision...

-  The Tamron cannot use all the AF points of the 5Dm3. Reports are out there that it doesn't use the peripheral AF points.
-  The 82mm filter thread. Getting new CP and ND filters is just an extra cost to deal with
-  All those people that complain about 3rd party lenses.

I bought a Sigma 70-200mm OS over the Canon 70-200 IS Mk II so I don't have a problem with 3rd party lenses, but I just hear too many horror stories about front/back focusing on Tamrons that it does affect my decision a little bit.

I figure if I get the 24-105mm now, I will save up to get the 24-70mm f2.8 IS when it comes out 2 years later. That's the lens everyone wants anyway.

I have a couple 64GB Sandisk Ultra 30mbps cards and a 16gb Sandisk Extreme 45mbps card, both cards cannot handle 1080p All-I or IPB. I have to knock it down to 720p if I want to record long videos on the SD cards. I can record up to 5 minutes tops before it automatically stops recording on those SD cards.

Software & Accessories / Re: Google Nexus 7, backup photos.

I have a Nexus 7 and DSLR Controller. The DSLR Controller app is a fantastic app. However, it does crash or fail to load sometimes. Also, the image preview function doesn't work that well. It's still in BETA though and it is almost feature complete.

I fail to see any savings.

Try recuva or Pandora Recovery. They're both free. Just make sure you don't format the card or do any additional writing to the card or you risk losing files.

Lenses / Re: 24-70 F/4L IS - Why I will Buy/Not Buy this lens.
« on: November 06, 2012, 04:55:39 PM »
I am buying the 24-105mm f4L IS for reach. I will buy the 24-70mm f2.8L IS whenever it finally comes out. The 24-70mm f4L IS is just completely redundant. However, I do like that it has a 77mm filter thread.

« on: November 05, 2012, 03:06:16 PM »
I decided to buy the 24-105mm used today because of this announcement. I think the extra reach is worth it and I think we are all waiting for the 24-70mm f2.8L IS anyway. When that comes out, my 24-105mm f4L won't feel completely redundant.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: EOS 6D Recording Video & Sound
« on: November 04, 2012, 03:25:02 PM »
Interesting. I never thought about putting the Tascam on the Opteka X Grip.

There's a screw mount on the back of the Tascam to hold it and a regular coldshoe mount on top to hold something like the RODE Videomic. However, I think a boompole would probably work better for sound.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/4L IS Coming [CR3]
« on: October 31, 2012, 10:56:35 AM »
I am about to buy a 24-105mm mainly to take video. I don't really see the purpose in getting the 24-70mm f4L IS unless reviews say it is just significantly optically superior in every way compared to the 24-105mm for its range. I think the price of the 24-70mm IS out the gate will be my main deterrent from the new lens and if Canon follows their 70-200mm formula, I should probably just wait for the 24-70mm f2.8L IS because we all know that's what everyone really wants.

If someone like Sigma can get their 24-70mm OS out the door before Canon does, I'd happily get that to complement my 70-200mm OS. I had my eye on the Tamron, but I'm hearing a few issues like onion bokeh, focusing issues and random lens error lockups.

Lenses / Re: Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS (version 1) vs Sigma 70-200 f2.8 OS
« on: October 14, 2012, 12:42:24 AM »
I shot a wedding a couple a weeks ago with my Sigma 70-200mm OS for the first time and I had like 90% keepers. It really is a great lens. Yes, AFMA works and yes, TCs work. However, lens profile autocorrection within the 5D Mark III will not work, but you can still do that in Lightroom.
