Lenses / Re: 24-70 F/4L IS - Why I will Buy/Not Buy this lens.
« on: November 06, 2012, 04:55:39 PM »
I am buying the 24-105mm f4L IS for reach. I will buy the 24-70mm f2.8L IS whenever it finally comes out. The 24-70mm f4L IS is just completely redundant. However, I do like that it has a 77mm filter thread.

I decided to buy the 24-105mm used today because of this announcement. I think the extra reach is worth it and I think we are all waiting for the 24-70mm f2.8L IS anyway. When that comes out, my 24-105mm f4L won't feel completely redundant.

Interesting. I never thought about putting the Tascam on the Opteka X Grip.

There's a screw mount on the back of the Tascam to hold it and a regular coldshoe mount on top to hold something like the RODE Videomic. However, I think a boompole would probably work better for sound.

I am about to buy a 24-105mm mainly to take video. I don't really see the purpose in getting the 24-70mm f4L IS unless reviews say it is just significantly optically superior in every way compared to the 24-105mm for its range. I think the price of the 24-70mm IS out the gate will be my main deterrent from the new lens and if Canon follows their 70-200mm formula, I should probably just wait for the 24-70mm f2.8L IS because we all know that's what everyone really wants.

If someone like Sigma can get their 24-70mm OS out the door before Canon does, I'd happily get that to complement my 70-200mm OS. I had my eye on the Tamron, but I'm hearing a few issues like onion bokeh, focusing issues and random lens error lockups.

I shot a wedding a couple a weeks ago with my Sigma 70-200mm OS for the first time and I had like 90% keepers. It really is a great lens. Yes, AFMA works and yes, TCs work. However, lens profile autocorrection within the 5D Mark III will not work, but you can still do that in Lightroom.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: $2899.00 5DIII - Beach Camera on eBay

For those of you on the fence for something cheaper, prices are steadily climbing. I've tracked the deals for the last couple of months and it went from $3000 -> $2800 -> $2700 -> $2750 -> $2800 -> $2900. And not all of these deals had warranties.

I think we'll see one more great deal before Christmas and then the arrival of the 6D will help prop up the 5DM3's price.

EOS Bodies / Re: DSLR as a Video Cam

This past weekend I saw a wedding photography use a Canon 60D as a video camera. He set it for a wide shot and just had it set to record for hours. The 60D was running Magic Lantern so he didn't have that 12min limit and he had a battery pack installed so it lasted fairly long. He also had a separate sound recorder set up closer to the action.

When an electronic device malfunctions from water damage, the first mistake people try is to see if it works right after a malfunction occurs. What you should have done was dry it out first for a day or so in rice or some kind of dessicant and then tried it. Turning it on right away is what shorted it out and permanently damaged the device.

I had a buddy that bought the Canon 18-200 superzoom and I told him not to buy it. I lent him my Sigma 17-50mm OS before his 18-200mm was shipped to him. While my Sigma just blew away his superzoom in image quality, he decided to still keep it because it was convenient.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Upgrading from 500D to 5D Mark 2 or 3

I bought a 5D Mark III to replace my T3i and while I can snap photos as good as the ones on my 5D, it does take me many more tries and much more effort. the 5D Mark III just has so many more keepers due to better AF, faster burst shots, and better low light capability.

However, it does take a small amount of fun away from using a camera because it just does so many things for you so well.

I'm sitting here at ups for my package. Looks like ups is working real hard to deliver iPhones today and the line is just insane.

Ooh...I hope the 4D doesn't make me regret my 5Dm3 purchase.

EOS Bodies / Re: At what price point will you consider buying the Canon 6D?

I would never buy it because it convinced me to buy the 5D Mark III.
