Lenses / 24-70 f/2.8L II strange zoom noise + decentering issues
« on: May 29, 2013, 10:14:56 AM »
I've just received a replacement for my 24-70 f/2.8L II as after some shooting with the old one I felt it had some decentering issues (whole right edge was blurred).
The replacement seems generally sharper across the frame, though doing a brick wall test this weekend just gone I now believe this copy to have a slight blurry left edge, not as bad as last copy but still :-\ The right edge is pretty sharp. On this point can someone tell me if decentering issues can be fixed by Canon repair centers?
The other issue which is weird is a strange noise/sound when I zoom in and out. The old copy I had was fine..a bit more resistance than this new one but sounded normal. The new copy I've got makes a strange tiny 'crackling' sound. It doesn't sound mechanical at all and the zoom action is smooth all the way. Maybe something to do with rubber seal in the zoom ring or air/bubbles in lubrication maybe? Only way I can describe it is the sound kelloggs rice krispies make when they 'snap, crackle and pop'  :) It seems to be quite random too. Sometimes it's worse than other times (temperature?). If I've not used it for a good few hours it hardly does it but then seems to happen more as I use it for that session. It is quite faint in sound I must add. If you were outside in noise you'd never notice but in a dead quiet room you can just hear it from behind the camera and if you put your ear to it it's clearly noticeable. I fear that if I used it for video the mic may pick it up easily causing some peaks in the audio.

Anyone else experience similar?

Lenses / 24-70 f2.8L II or.....
« on: March 28, 2013, 11:25:33 AM »
ok just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this...
take a look at my sig for my current lenses. notice the widest lens i have is my 50mm. I need to rectify this.
now what would you do in my position:

A) 24-70 f2.8L II
B) 35 f1.4L + 24-105 f4L IS

note I can get either option for essentially the same money.
oh yeah.. will be used mainly on my 5D MKIII.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D Mark III - Sensor Cleaning - Clean Now
« on: February 25, 2013, 01:06:28 PM »
Could you 5D Mark III owners test or confirm something for me please?

I've had the 'Automatic Cleaning' option enabled in the Sensor Cleaning menu since new (seeing as it's enabled by default). This performs as i'd expect like my 40D. If you put your ear right up to the body you can hear a tiny couple of electronic sounds. I believe this to be perfectly normal.

However I've just run the 'Clean Now' option in the Sensor Cleaning menu on my 5D Mark III for the first time.
And I expected it to just do the same as the Automatic Cleaning that runs when you switch on and off, but instead it made a few very audible noises. More like a motor sound which repeated a couple of times.
Is this normal? Can I get you users to check it on yours to see if it's the same? Remember I'm specifically talking about the 'Clean Now' option in the Sensor Cleaning menu.

Software & Accessories / What are most people using for processing RAW
« on: September 21, 2012, 08:41:55 AM »
For my 40D raw files I've been using Elements 8 for some time.
Now I'm about to get a 5D MK III, I'll not be able to use Elements 8 as it's version of ACR isn't compatible with this camera. I can't afford a copy of Photoshop CS6 so whats my best option? What do most people use? I guess the answer is Lightroom 4.1.

Just about to pull the trigger on a 5D Mk III to replace my 40D as main body.
I currently have a couple of Sandisk Extreme 60mb/s 8gb cards.
I was thinking of getting a 32GB for the 5D Mk III. And hope to use it for both stills and video capture.
So do I just get a Sandisk Extreme 60mb/s 32gb card or would i be better advised to pay extra now for a Extreme Pro 90mb/s ? Is the extra cost really worth it? Will I be dissapointed with the performance of the 60mb/s cards? Or how about going all out and getting a Lexar Professional 1000x card? Are these as reliable as Sandisk?

So many questions  :)

EOS Bodies / EOS Bodies - Developing ranges....
« on: September 19, 2012, 10:45:24 AM »
This is just a thought since looking at where we are with Canons EOS Bodies..

I reckon the following is a simplified view of where Canon see their bodies and the lines/levels of development:

CROP BODIES

Entry: 1100D
Mid-range: 650D
Top-end: 7D

FULL FRAME BODIES

Entry: 6D
Mid-range: 5D Mk III
Top-end: 1D X

Notice that under the crop bodies there is nowhere for the xxD range. I'm seriously wondering given the ability of the xxxD range now starting with the 650D that there is no longer room/a need for the xxD range, and that the 60D/60Da will be the last in that line. It does simplify things somewhat in a similar way to the merging of the xD and xDS ranges.

What do you reckon? Am I on to something here or is this utter tosh?  ;D
