A 6k sensor upgrade for the C500 with RAW 4:4:4 14-bit with a $5,000 price drop.

A 4k firmware upgrade with 4:4:4 12-bit for the C300 with 120fps at 2.5k and 240fps at 1080p 4:2:2, all for under 10k.

A 5Dmk4 with uncompressed 4k at 24p, 120fps and 60fps at 1080p.

A 24-105mm F2.0/L IS USM for under 3k.

Some good replies so far and I think the above people nailed it. I think it also comes down to the fact that the 5Dmk3 was not designed to autofocus while you are shooting, in the sense of continually tracking a shot. IMO, it's much easier to just magnify in and manually focus, just so there's no discrepancy incase you happen to focus on a background object by accident. Nailing focus on a DSLR screen can be terribly hard if you're just judging by the screen alone, especially since you don't have any built in focus assist. If you already know what you want to shoot and know the subject will move, just have them move from point A and B and mark your focus so you know how far to pull. If not, you're probably not working on a major production so just play around! :)

I recently had the opportunity to travel to Paidha, Uganda for some photo and video work. Hope y'all enjoy the images. Everything was shot on a 5Dmk3 with the 24-105mm F/4L  and the 70-200mm F/2.8L IS II.

As far as I am aware, there is not a way to disable that feature. I just did a quick little google search and couldn't find anything on it either.

As far as what the point would be, the only thing I can think of would be if you were just kind of fooling around with the video and realized you wanted to take a picture, you can still capture a RAW image with a press of the shutter button. That is if you have RAW as your current setting though.

I don't think there's anything you did wrong; it's just a feature of the camera. As far as not doing it again, I'd say just pay more attention to your finger placement (unless you're having a little bit to drink again  ;D). Also, use some kind of tripod or shoulder rig so your hands aren't resting on the camera but the other grips if you really want to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Canon General / C300 Necessities

Hey everyone, so I've spent the last few weeks doing some research and I've decided the C300 is the best camera for my needs. I'm putting together a little kit at the moment, but I'm curious to see as what some of y'all would suggest as necessities. Understandably accessories will vary depending on work, but I'll be doing everything from traveling through Africa for documentary work, weddings, short features, etc. I've basically just compiled a list of everything from BNH on their accessory section, but I just want to make sure I've got all my bases covered. Thanks in advance.

Unless they improved high ISO performance by two or three stops, I don't think there's anything else that could entice me. If they could make a camera that has the native performance of what ML can do, I would be highly impressed, but I really don't see them putting out anything that has HDR Video or RAW out. Even if they did do that though, what would be the purpose of buying it if you could just get a cheaper 5d3 and have the same features through ML? It'll be fun to see what they do though. Technology is going some crazy places.

First, congrats on the gig!

Your equipment list looks pretty solid camera wise for video work. I know a lot of other videographers who are fans of shooting on primes, but for documentary work I absolutely love and suggest shooting on your zoom lenses. While doing the interview, zoom in a bit, zoom a little further after a while, then zoom back out. You want to give the editor something to work around and not wind up with a static shot. I'm not talking going crazy with it, but use your intuition. If you haven't ever edited before, it may be a little hard to think in terms of video editing, but simply compose it like you would  picture. Medium, Medium Close, and Close up. Then work between them.

Now, with that being said, I highly suggest getting yourself a monitor with focus assist. Ikan has a 7" IPS for around $449 that is absolutely fantastic. Being that you would need to manually focus between zooming in and out, that is going to save your butt quite a bit of time. That's a little on the pricey side if you're only just getting into it though, but it'll be worth it if it's something you stick with.

Pick up some small LED's. Chromo Inc has a 160LED panel on Amazon for $32.00. Grab a couple of those and some reflectors and you can light just about any interview type set you'll ever come across. They're small, light weight, and super cheap to replace if they break. Manfrotto makes a pretty set of LED's that is built quite a bit more rugged, but considering it's $280.00 for a 80LED panel, I'll stick with Chromo.

For audio, I ran a Zoom H4n with an NTG-2 mic for quite some time, and even still use that set up frequently. You won't find better equipment for the price. Having a lav would be ideal, and if you have the money to spare I'd suggest the Sennheisser ew 112-p G3. I've used those for all sorts of documentary work around the world, and they are as durable as they come and sound great. They'll run you about $650 for a set of transceiver and receiver though, so I'd stick with the NTG-2 for the beginning.

As far as camera settings go, it's really up to you. Standard is going to be 24p @ 1080p for just about everything you shoot. I rarely run into anyone shooting a doc in 30p, but just double check the frame rate of the other video guys to make sure you're matching them.

As a rule of thumb, your shutter speed is going to be double your frame rate. Set it to 50 if you're shooting @ 24p, 125 if you're shooting @ 60p, etc.

As far as coloring, I like shooting Neutral, and then adding a bit of saturation and contrast in post. You would change that just as you would change the picture style during Manual shooting. You'll hear a few people tell you to download Technicolor Cinestyle, but I'd suggest against it unless you really feel like getting deep into color grading, or if you're directly told to.

I love mine to death, but it did give me a scare after about two months of use. I had my IS on during a shoot, dipped my camera down, and then heard a terrible grinding noise. Literally scared the crap out of me. I've had it for almost 8 months  and it's still working fine, but if I happen to move the lens up or down while the IS is on, it sounds like metal on metal for a second or two. I would have sent it off to Canon to get it checked out, but I've heard too many horror stories about lenses being sent to Canon and never working the same way after a repair. The sharpness and contrast is unreal, and I'd rather deal with a little grinding and having the IS crap out on me after 2 years as BozillaNZ said than take a chance of affecting the quality it's currently putting out.

You will absolutely not notice a difference in video quality between the t2i/t3i/t4i/7D. Before I got my 5Dmk3 we used to shoot A-cam with a 7D and B-cam with with a t4i. I had a t2i for my own play around use and when it came to comparing the footage there was no difference between the quality.

If you're serious about the video, the autofocus on the t4i is something you should stay away from. If it's just for family use and small personal projects it'd be fine, but I think you'll find it a bit crippling if you go from relying on autofocus on whatever 't' camera you get to the mk3 which doesn't have it.

If you get any of the 't' model cameras, make sure you put ML on it. I can't speak for the t5i, but none of the older models let you adjust white balance according the Kelvin which can really be a deal breaker in some scenarios as you don't have much leeway to grade that footage at all.

I was debating between quite a few different lenses a couple months back when my friend gave me some advice, "If you don't have the 70-200mm f/2.8L II, don't but another lens until you get it." Granted, there are different lenses needed for different situations, but when I tell you it was the best investment I have ever made, I'm not exaggerating. I find I use that lens more than anything else in my kit.
