Lenses / Re: 35L or 50L?
« on: March 18, 2013, 04:24:37 PM »
Why not the sigma 35mm? Its by most accounts better and cheaper than the canon.

As for the build quality, I actually thought the 35L was pretty horrible in this respect.  The outside is all plastic and feels kinda cheap imo.

For me i prefer the 35mm length as a walkaround and after buying the sigma 35mm my 50/1.4 just sat in my closet until i ended up selling it.

Also note that IQ of the 50/1.4 is as good if not better than the 50/1.2 so unless you shoot at 1.2 all the time or need the weather sealing i dont think i would bother.

Canon General / Re: Which eye do you shoot with?

Left eye. I'm heavily left eye dominant but right handed. Works for cameras but not too much for that other type of shooting

+1 for the sigma 35mm. Just got mine and its just amazing.  The only thing to note is that the focus ring rotation is pretty small, I think someone said 70 degrees end to end, and trying to nail focus manually is a bit tough.

Samyang is great for the price but it has some really funky pinwheel bokeh. Scroll down to the bokeh comparison.

Lenses / Re: Need to test my lens for sharpness
« on: March 11, 2013, 02:12:53 PM »
I actually had this exact same thought yesterday with my 70-200 IS II. I tried shooting the 12233 test chart printed fairly well on 17x11 paper and the corners seemed to be not as sharp as they should be.

The only thing was shooting a chart of that size even at 200mm put the position of the lens near the MFD.  Could this cause the sides to actually be slightly OOF since its so close?

Also during checking out my lens i noticed a large piece of dust on the inside of the rear element :(

Lenses / Re: EF or EF-S for 7D/70D
« on: March 07, 2013, 04:41:56 PM »
So i was in the same situation a few years ago when i started with my T3, moved to a 60D, and now with a 6D.  I ended up buying a bunch of EF-S lenses throughout this time totalling ~2,000$, selling the used lenses as i upgraded to better lenses.

I just did a full calculation of money lost in the process, and my total monetary losses for that 2k was only 281$, and all of that was basically due to the sigma 30mm f/1.4's price drop last month.

All of my lenses i bought new first hand as well, just waited for deals on them.

Basically my point is buy the lens you need now and worry about full frame later. Canon lenses are very good at holding their value, 3rd party not so much but its not horrendous.

Also, for crop sensors, the 18-55 shitty kit lens is actually sharper than the 17-40 except in the very center.  It also gets you IS, the 17-40 is better in build quality, color, contrast, and an extra stop at the long end.  I would say definitely not worth the 5-6x price increase.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 7D Mark II Information [CR1]

*UPDATE 2*
The battery does help a camera body autofocus an EF lens faster.
From Chuck Westfall… “In addition, the EOS-1D X achieves a higher lens motor drive speed with select L-series USM telephoto lenses than the 5D Mark III because of the 1D X’s more powerful battery pack.”

Exactly, power, i.e. V x A = W.

1 x LP-E4N is 11.1 V x 2450 mAh = 27.195 W
2 x LP-E6 is 7.2 V x 1600 mAh x 2 = 23.040 W

27 W vs. 23 W, not much of a difference, but it's there.

mAh is a measure of electrical charge and not max current output   :-X

I really dont see why anyone would buy this over a Fuji X100s

Sigma 35mm f/1.4 on 6D, just love that focal length for some reason.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Hi =) -- Need New Camera -- Need Advice

To the point
About the 6d,
I'm reading really bad reviews about the camera and its build qulity and I fear that I'l be missing the "Canon Feel" Which I loved so much and the reason I never Used Straps. you might think that thats stupid reason to judge camera and not by her specs But Had really Good bonding with my 7D =)

So i had the same fear but after buying the 6D i can say that it feels just as sturdy as a 5D/7D.  The bulk of the body is magnesium and feels rigid while being significantly lighter.  My only gripe with the build quality is the top plate plastic which feels pretty cheap, though its necessary for the wifi and GPS.

I had talked to canon tech support about the weather sealing and they had this to say if it helps:
"The weather sealing of the EOS 6D is similar to that of the EOS 7D and the EOS 5D Mark III.  It is both dust and water resistant.  The overall body design EOS 6D is similar to those two cameras.  However, note that unlike the EOS 7D and EOS 5D Mark III, the EOS 6D front and rear covers are made of a Magnesium Alloy and the top, side, and bottom covers are made of a Polycarbonate resin."

Also, I loaned a 5D3 and used it with my 70-200 f/2.8 and it did not have that issue, neither did my friend's.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: To buy the 6D or the 5DM3 and Which Lens
« on: February 12, 2013, 12:22:37 PM »
I think you answered your own question, if youre trying to shoot sports then definitely 5D3.  The 6D is pretty usable for sports with center point focus only but if you ever try to track across the frame it does not fare very well. Also, the extra 1.5 FPS will be useful.

+1 to getting a 70-200 2.8. Lens is wonderful. Focusing is extremely fast and if you ever need extra range just get a TC or slap it onto your 40D.

There is a Zeiss 40mm f/0.33. It auctioned two years ago for 60,000 euro.  If you do buy it please share your pictures   ;D

Does it bother anyone else that he thinks f2.0-f/2.8 is 3/4 of a stop and f/1.8 to f/2.8 is a full stop
