Sweet, thanks all. I definitely didn't switch it on purpose. I took a picture of some Thai kids and showed them the result. One got all excited and started pressing buttons. Perhaps that's what happened.

Any who, after reading about it, it actually seems handy.

Do you guys use the mirror lock up feature often?? I enjoy night photography and it seems useful.

I have a canon 60d. It takes video fine and it takes pictures when in live view. However, when I look through viewfinder and take a picture, the shutter doesn't automatically release. I have to press it a second time to hear the second click. It does still take the picture though so  a bit confused. Help please .

I like wide angle shots and low light photography so I would go with option 4 and buy a 50 1.8 for ≈$110 and it's still cheaper than option 3.

However, I agree with Mendolera. With your purposes you mentioned... the 55-250, 50 1.8, and buying a 18-55 would also be a good option.

You'll enjoy learning the 60d either way. Lots of fun.

You guys mentioned filters. Which filters are worth buying and why? In what situations would I need a specific one? And I also don't fully know what a lens hood is for. Totally ignorant when it comes to this stuff.

Video & Movie / First Time Ever Filming, Feedback Appreciated

Shot with a 60d and a 17-55 2.8 IS. I think one shot was done with a 7d and a 50 1.8. I used my setup though for practice. Used 24 fps at 1/50 shutter speed.

This was obviously done in low light and I cranked the ISO as high as it goes for the dark scenes.

I've just read that ISO's 160, 320, 640, 1280, 1500, 3000, etc are the best performers when it comes to ISO. Then I read something about dynamic range and I got a bit confused.

I was originally looking at the Benro A0691T Travel Angel . But the price on the BENRO TRA069 Travel Angel looks pretty nice.

Now the Cullmann 52001 is something I can see myself buying. I don't need full height as most of my shots won't be needing to comfortably stand for hours on end. I will definitely look into this one more. Although you said it isn't the most stable thing in the world and that is a bit of a concern to me.

1. How is the stability on the Benro tripods I listed above?

2. Can you please elaborate on the stability of the Cullmann?

3. Would it be possible to put a Manfrotto 701 fluid head on all of the tripods listed above?

4. Would it be practical to travel with one of the tripods listed above and bring a photo and video head? Or would one head be good for both video and photography? For example, can the Manfrotto 701 allow me to do vertical shots or does the head only stay horizontal for video purposes?

Lots of questions, but I know you guys can help with the answers .

Price range is under $300. I don't need a full size tripod as this is for traveling. Something small enough to strap to a day pack and carry is more important to me than being able to comfortably stand while taking photos or video. A height of around 3'-5' would be great for me.

I am going to Thailand in December for one month and will want this with me always on my day pack. I will be doing lots of video, photos, and time lapses.

If any one has any experience or recommendations for me on a good, small, light, with a functioning head for my purposes (can buy separate if needed) tripod... then please let me know .

Oh yeah. I have a 60d with a 17-55 2.8 IS with one more lens on the way... still undecided.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I decided to get the Lowepro Sport 200 AW. It seems like it will fit all my needs. Thanks for the help. Now on to my next hunt.... a compact tripod that can do both video and photos.

Hey guys,

I am relatively new to DSLR photography, but have fallen in love with it. I currently have a 60d with a 17-55 lens. I am leaving in December to go to Thailand for one full month and am trying to find the best possible back pack for all of my gear plus a little bit of stuff as I would want to use it as a day pack as well.

Before I leave I will be purchasing a hood, UV filter, extra battery(s), small tripod (I've been using a friend's and it is a monster of a tripod), and one more lens (undecided and open to suggestions).

So my needs/desires will be as follows:

1. Fit all gear mentioned above.

2. Ideally make a full left or right portion of backpack a spot for the tripod. I will be buying a small tripod that will be able to fit inside the pack

3. Be comfortable enough to carry literally every where in thailand in addition to my relatively small travel backpack. (the travel backpack will stay in hostels and go at the bottom of buses, etc.. but the dslr bag will ALWAYS be with me)

4. Have just enough space for a water bottle and change of clothes

5. Under $150

Any and all advice will be appreciated.
