Black & White / Re: Dark or light?
« on: March 05, 2015, 06:35:27 PM »
One has to be careful since if you're not looking with a properly calibrated monitor it can really skew the results.

On my monitor, I personally like the second. I find the first is a little too "HDRish" for me. For post I prefer when the average person can't tell that any adjustments were made. It's just my taste. As a result, I tend to be very "sensitive" to HDR gone wild.

Don't get me wrong, both are beautiful shots, I just prefer the second.

Lenses / Re: 300-4L or 70-200-2.8L with extender?

I can hardly believe that 70-200/2.8 II + TC 2x III is the same IQ as 400/5.6:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=687&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=7&API=0&LensComp=278&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

I do not usually use even TC 1.4x III because of loss of sharpness / contrast on contrast scene...
(on 135/2, 70-200/2.8 II, 200/2, 300/2.8 I)
If I need the longer reach, I use 1.3x cropped body. ;-)

In LightRoom is the ability to soft proof for printing, does PS CC offer the same?

Manual of current version:
http://download1.zoner.com/binary/zps17help_en.pdf
says:
Shift+P Pre-print color preview (if color management is active and a printer profile has been
set)

I hate to tell you this, but LR doesn't support 10-bit, at least not yet.  The only Photo software I'm aware of is PhotoShop CS5 & higher.  Here's some more information I just found:

https://photographylife.com/what-is-30-bit-photography-workflow

You hate to tell, I hate to learn that even more. Oh carp.
Looks like time to step up and pay Adobe's monthly baksheesh.
Looked at Zoner's website, some script crashed FireFox, um, if they can't even code a stable web presence well, makes me skeptical regarding their software package's code.
FYI: I use Zoner Photo Studio regularly and it is pretty stable. I can see difference of linked ramp.psd in it depending on 10-bit output enabled/disabled.

You do know that there is only *1* 10bit image editing tool, don't you?

And that it is Photoshop?

You are wrong:

Zoner Photo Studio can utilize CUDA - see http://www.zoner.com/en/system-requirements
The application says that enabling GPU calculations on my system (8-core AMD CPU + Quadro 6000 GPU) speed is increased 12x.
Unfortunately I do not know how to measure the real life speed boost, because I do not know which operations utilize CUDA processing...

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Opinions on Sigma 85/1.4?
« on: December 05, 2014, 08:36:58 AM »
I've owned C 85/1.8 - terrible purple fringing and AF not as consistent as I'm used to in current lenses. I have C 85/1.2 II and S 85/1.4 now, because S 85 sometimes locks 1DsIII up. Image quality and AF speed is much better with S 85.

The only downside is that all of the points are clustered near the center of the frame, as the system was originally designed for APS-C.

Speed    Auto:1/4000 - 30 sec, Manual:1/4000 - 30 sec (1/3 EV steps or 1/2 EV steps), bulb
X-Synchronization    1/125 sec.
Exposure Compensation    -2.0 to + 1.0 EV

It can not be used as easy as DSLR and as creative as other MF cameras.
(Price [+ price of lenses] of course makes me not to buy it.)

I replaced 85/1.8 with S 85/1.4 - better iq and AF accuracy on 1D4.
But now I have 85/1.2 too because Sigma does not work well mounted on 1ds3 with new firmware - the camera stopped responding several times...
Purple fringing around the contrasty & light parts [black foreground against white background is not problem] is pretty bad on both Canon 85 (wide open and near wide open). L is also pretty slow AF, but acceptable on 1 series body...
