Well, this building is in PA steel country...but it is a coal-sifting plant. I am so fascinated with the place I spend whole weekends there!

Hmm... Allentown? I was in Bethlehem in 99 - twice... Stayed at the Hampton inn across 22. Liked the fall stay better than the Feb stay...

I drive thru Allentown and Bethlehem on the way to coal country...Frackville and Wilkes-Barre areas are a treasure- trove for shooting. I see photos everywhere I look.

One of the nicest Images I've seen on this site, very striking.

for my point of view,if you are hardcore dynamic range guy whom always need to lift up the shadow or can't get the exposure right.Go get D800.
I am using 5DmarkIII,i think it is a very good all around camera.I use it for wedding,bridal and events.Does the poor dynamic range stop me creating good image,I guest no.Well,I don't have 30 years of experience in photography,I only have 3 years of experience in photography.I am not surprise if you find Angkowat work is better than me

I get this alot when I shoot event and wedding.For wedding,I will face their friends and relatives tried to take some shot with their cell phone or compact camera.While events,I will face those reporters from various of newspaper.
Often,I will let them have the shot 1st then I lift up my camera and raise my hand asking everyone look at me with strong and firm tone.Just 1 or 2 shot make sure everyone looking into the camera and I will leave the place while allowing someone else take the shot.
Then,I grab some candid with my 70-200 while they were been photographer by others.

A selection of my best portraits since I own my 5D Mark III, which is for a little over three months now. Owned a 500D/Rebel T2i before, the difference is vast, I believe I don't need to tell you. You can find others on my website www.florianbieler.de or on facebook, if you got that.

Here we got some taken with the 100mm 2.8L:





Before that I owned the 100mm 2.8 non-L, also great for portraits.





The 70-200 4.0 non-L also makes a nice portrait lens, if space is available.



And these ones were taken with the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC





I love that thing.

I like the 3rd image.That is amazing.I should try that sometimes.

As for me,I will vote for Canon 5D mark III due to:-

-Way much more cross type AF point
-shallow depth of field
-Full frame = sharper output
-High ISO usability

I got an assignment 2 month ago,an actor from Hong Kong came to Malaysia for one of the club opening ceremony.I was asked to take picture of him naturally and has to avoid using flash.I manage to take a picture of him while he sing along the music while holding a champagne glass.

I love multiple light candids like those examples in your posts. Thank you for your experimentation and, especially, for sharing the rig. It sounds like the key element of the Nissan cord is a switch for external use. I will research this gear.Side brackets with posts as handles or mounting of flash heads used to be in lots of camera store bins as used. Sometimes at yard sales! That would work to hold the Odin controller.

Do you mix any Strato receivers into the Odin setup?

Is there a preflash that would cause any issue with old-style "generic" optical triggers placed on a studio-style power pack?

I used to do a lot of this with pure optical triggers for editorial work. Had a kit of spring clamps, threaded clamps, magic-arms, hand-driven lag screws with 1/4-20 tops, a real do-everything little case. Lots of duct-tape, of course. I plan to be doing this for events, weddings, this year. I already do this (multiple speedlites) for vacation rental/RE shooting.

At this point I am planning on using 550's instead of a jump to 600's. I do have one 580ex, a bunch of Vivitar 285s that I will swap for used 550's.

Hi Jonathan,

I just slip the Odin controller in vest pocket.No I do not mix with Strato on my wedding work but I did once on Portrait shoot with my friend's Strato,it works just fine.
After owns odin,I didn't use pure optical triggers.Thus,no comment on that.

Here are another shot with this setup and it works just great

My friend and I got an assignment to shoot in a club for their opening ceremony,He use Nikon D800 while I use Canon 5dMark III.I am the one will be processing his and my image once done the shooting.In such situation,I find no benefit D800 towards 5Dmark III.

1st,At high ISO above ISO800 of D800 do not give dynamic range advantage towards 5Dmark III.
2nd,The big megapixel of D800 is a drawn back in rough noise at high ISO.5dmark III(6D as well I belief) i can comfortable to shoot at ISO 12800.
3rd,The big file size is pain in post processing(Extra money to be spend upgrading my PC)

In my opinion,that is depends you shoot.If you are a landscape and studio photographer,D800 is the best choice.If you always have to bump high ISO above iso800 such as event & wedding,5dmark III or 6D is the best choice for the price(1dx if you are that rich).

Hi jonathan7007,
I have a solution for using Phottix odin while at the same time using another flash on body without using bracket .I did this myself for my wedding work.
1st ,get yourself a Nissin SC-01 Universal TTL cord http://www.nissindigital.com/SC-01.html
2nd, attach Nissin SC-01 Universal TTL cord on your body while phottix odin transmitter on the cord external hot shoe.
3rd, attach your flash light on phottix odin receiver.then attach it on the Nissin SC-01 universal TTL cord top shoue.
4th,keep the switch on Nissin SC-01 Universal TTL cord on EXT(external).





I hope this helps.I had been shooting a lot of wedding and event using this setup.It is always great to have on body flash as fill light while another off flash as key light/rim light.







However,lately the Nissin SC-01 giving me connectivity issue between the cord and my camera hot shoe.

Kids indoor 1 430exII may be enough,but if whole family with consist of more than 7-8 people.I afraid you may need 2 flash light.
Besides,softbox at the size of 40x40cm does cut down the power of our flash light by around 1 stop.The larger the softbox the greater the light lost but it does improves the quality of light.

5D Mark III + 70-200 F/2.8 is a great combination my friend.Aside the awesome shallow depth of field,I do sometimes turn off the flash and shoot with only available light at high ISO.
