Lenses / Re: 24-70 ii shipping?
« on: October 05, 2012, 07:58:28 AM »
Mine is being delivered today.  ;D

Bought at NewEgg and not a pre-order. Just happened to have caught them when they had four in stock.  I was suspicious when their page showed In Stock, because I've been burned before in instances where an online store said "in stock", and then after ordering and paying, you get an email that there was an error, or some other such nonsense. As a precaution, I online chatted with their CS folks who confirmed that they had four in stock.

NewEgg is not a store that photographers often think of for pro equipment, but I've had luck there before, so taking a chance by checking to see if they had the lens was good fortune for me. And, having said all that, they were of course OUT OF STOCK by the next day, with the other three gone in a flash!  Price was same as everywhere else... $2299.  Looking forward to UPS this afternoon!!

Lenses / Re: what filter for my first "L" Lens
« on: October 04, 2012, 10:26:39 PM »
Well this is my first L lens so I'm just scared of dropping it .. Never dropped a lens but if I'm going to it will be the L lol!

Honestly, if you drop the lens a filter will almost certainly not help.

I've seen pictures of shattered uv filters and the lens is unharmed... so it can help...

Happened to me with my 24-105L at Disneyworld a couple of years ago. Lens fell off the baby stroller, and the filter (B+W) shattered. No damage to the lens!  Of course the people near me were ready to call an ambulance until I realized that only the filter broke!

Dropped lenses.... "There are those that "have".. and those that "will""

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon 7D - should i wait or not?
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:59:01 PM »
The OP stated that his primary use was for sports and wildlife photography.  Therefore the 7D is a no-brainer due to the available FPS (frames per second) burst capability of the 7D, along with its other excellent qualities.

Suggesting the 5D ll or lll is taking away from his ability to capture "that" shot when shooting moving targets.

The 7D is second only in FPS to the new 1DX (12-14 FPS) at $6800.  And for his use, the APS-C gives him longer reach.

Also, the CF cards are NOT phasing out. They have faster available speeds than ANY SDXC cards, and the new top of the line Canon 1DX uses two of them.  They ain't going anywhere!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Adobe RGB or sRGB please?
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:49:06 PM »
Thank you all for your feedback. I think I shall continue to shoot raw and Ljpeg but with adobeRGB set to take advantage of the larger colour range if I want to show a photo immediately to friends on my laptop.

If that is the primary use of your photos, then sRGB is the answer.  The time-honored rule is that if your photos are primarily for display via the web or on a computer, then sRGB is the most that a computer display can present via the web.

However, if you are planning to print high-end, then shoot raw in AdobeRGB which gives you the option to convert later when printing yourself or working with a professional lab that has printers that can print the entire color gamut of aRGB.

Lenses / Re: If you can have ONLY 3 lenses, what would they...???
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:29:30 PM »
Easy!

24-70 f/2.8L II
70-200 f/2.8 L II
The upcoming 200-400 f/4L with built in 1.4X

That gives me a total reach of 24mm (on my 1DX and 5D3) to 896mm (using the 1.4X on my 7D)

EOS Bodies / Re: mhm... open letter to canon?
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:16:34 PM »
The points brought up here in multiple posts are certainly valid, but Canon has other problems as well that have been harped on repeatedly over the last few years.

One of the biggest is that their software engineers STILL think that the overwhelmingly majority of their customers are on Windows. Virtually all of their software is written for Microsoft, and "maybe" ported to Mac OS's as an afterthought, or after thousands of customers DEMAND it.

Canon has to realize that Mac users make up a VERY LARGE percentage of creative arts professionals and amateurs. They just don't get it!  An example is my 6350 large format photo printer... I have to keep one remaining Windows computer in order to take advantage of the cost-analysis function built into the printer.  I am not the only owner of that printer that has BEGGED Canon to port the software to be functional on Mac OS... but no response from them. (The program's purpose is to measure pigment use and paper costs in order to accurately provide cost per print which is extremely important for large format when they can cost upwards of $20.00 to print!)

This is just Canon. Mostly great equipment, but piss-poor development beyond.

Lenses / Canon 24-70 f/2.8 Mk II POST WHERE YOU KNOW THEY HAVE STOCK
« on: October 03, 2012, 06:48:47 PM »
I just ordered the 24-70 II from Newegg. They had four in stock when I ordered, so as of this post, they should still have three left.

They seem to be the only company in the USA that has current stock, and got VERY lucky with a brainstorm to take a look at NewEgg.... not generally thought of for photo equipment.  I confirmed the stock with online chat and should have the lens by Friday latest.

If you've been looking to buy, I'd go IMMEDIATELY to NewEgg and see if the 24-70 page still shows stock.
Price same as everywhere else... $2299.00

Good Luck!
